Please note I started this 31 day build with full intentions of completing it by the end of March, but I suffered a serious medical emergency about halfway through, spending over a week in hospital. I do intend on finishing this project first before I do anything else, but the updates will be further apart as I recover....
MARCH MADNESS!
I've taken the silly step of building a large scale F-14 in 31 days as part of a Group Build by Justin Lentz here:
/ 331097009023901
The ancient Revell/Monogram F-14A is one of three large scale Tomcats available, alongside the almost equally ancient Tamiya -A version (which requires a lot of rescribing but is generally accurate in shape) and the somewhat inaccurate Trumpeter versions (A/B and D) (which requires new intake parts and a lot of rivet filling/rescribing wrong panel lines).
I'll be doing this one largely out of the box, adding some rivets and some missed panel lines, replacing the old chunky Revell parts like missiles, fuel tanks, cockpit pieces and nozzles with downgraded Tamiya parts.
I'll be uploading a video every day or other day throughout March, so stay tuned for quick updates as I need to throw this together!

A very important aircraft in my family. My father was the chief safety inspector for the F-14 for nearly 30 years.

I love the Tomcat, but probably not as much as you do to kit-bash such an old Revel kit - flash and all. I love how you use the Tamiya 1/48 Cat as a reference - I can’t wait to see the final result!
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels Год назад
The flash hasn't been that much of a problem, its actually mainly sink marks and really big sprue attachment points. The fit hasn't been too bad so far at all! Yep the Tamiya 1/48 is still the best reference, although I am using the 1/32 as well as I kitbash the parts together.

I'm in with the F-6D from eduard. Here's good luck to us all to get them over the finish line heh. You certainly picked a more challenging build for it I'll admit.
@beckersmodels

You can do it! Actually the challenge for me will be the painting and weathering I think. I hope to have the major construction done by the end of this week..

Why hello Mr Becker………….. I have been struggling with my health, as I have for 12 years now and also careering around the Tubeisfere looking at the ‘Plastic Model’ making sector because Chris when I returned I was shocked by the sector and the changes that had taken place!!!! OK it may have been just me as a child not knowing. For me it made with what was in the box excluding paints and I was very happy………bish bash bosh onto some line and tacked to ceiling. So with all this palaver, I thought F*** that I am just going to make them, like I did and it was fun. So, a large run around the channels I am now the proud (?) owner of loads and loads of ‘kit’ to enable me to finish a kit to the highest levels plus paints and glues of all types and colours and effects. Often I have two or more of the same item as I cannot remember what I have bought before its all come in so fast! Now paint and glue I should use it up I guess but knives, cutters, clamps, brushes etc just how many do I need????? Now I found your stash post about buying for legacy interesting as it must get to that. Before I had the limitations of my pocket money and parents and grandparents’ willingness to indulge me. Today in a few short months I have in excess of 60 models and have discovered that I have a weakness for the Corsair, Wildcat, Sea Harrier, I can see me having a fleet or two of each of these. Now I have bought all scales, can one build a 144 cleanly? And manufacturers and types, do you really enjoy tank tracks!!!!???? I have looked in the boxes and it really annoys me before I even touch them!??? You Sir are a Looney!!! I have bought an Easy 8, I mean one has too yeah. Too simple for you I guess?? However, I think you and I are possibly similar and if we do then we do it well. Trouble is I am a little put off by the hobby as I don’t want to just join parts together, but I am not a delicate person…for me it’s more power man!!! Get the biggest drill because why use a small one?? I can do 6 ft of mud but a shimmer down the side???????? Plus, then there’s the people some are so pretentious (they generally do build just comment) that I want to shout and disconnect them. And of course, some folks are educated to ‘glue up’ level and cant follow a line of thought. Now so far, I have yet to open a jar, a bottle or a tube or build a single kit. Paralysed between fear of failure and need to be No1 in what I do. Now you sir have had a great idea about your channel and I really hope you are considering copyrighting and securing your tag lines etc because what you have may be big Chris certainly in RU-vid terms mate. I don’t want to say it in clear simple terms as who maybe listening??? Anyway far too much for now Chris.

Always good to hear your thoughts Bob - and your struggles are literally going to be my next topic for my Talking Models segment. Yes there are lots of pretentious and judging modellers out there who strive for perfection without realizing that a lot of us just want to build a model! Hope you're keeping well, speak soon...

Interested to see how it goes. I've got the trumpeter version. I'm debating whether or not to get the Zactomodel airintake resin to make it more accurate. I did save $90 through buying it on a Facebook group
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels Год назад
Gday Brodie - yeah the Zacto intakes are a big go to for the Trumpeter kit, or you could try to fit the Tamiya intakes (there's some spare parts available on ebay IIRC) - have a look at Jims Models he's done the Zacto conversion on his and said it was nearly a piece of cake...

Isn't it ironic that we value deep panel lines in models that represent high speed aircraft where panel gaps are minimised, (even filled) because of the drag they cause. I like your rivetting, but (it hard to tell on my screen) have made a line each side of the join (ie rivetted both panels)? I really do like your attention to detail. I'm sure if its an optical illusion but I thought you Tamiya part was a bit smaller than the monogram/Revell part. Are they actually the same size? Good job so far Chris.
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels Год назад
Thanks Emma - sorry about not seeing the rivets too well - check out part 2 I was able to get the right lighting for them there... And yes the panel line conundrum! Luckily on the Tamiya 1/48 F-14s, the panel lines are quite petite... The Tamiya parts have different dimensions to the Revell, but only slightly - I think the pylons for the missiles are a bit smaller. The intakes seem about the same size.
@emmabird9745
@emmabird9745 Год назад
@@beckersmodels Hi Chris. I wondered about size because I remembered that in the 1960s the Airfix Spitfire IX (1/72) was slightly but noticeably smaller than the Revel Mk2. That means one was out of scale, I have no means of knowing which. Less sophisticated days I suppose. I though a bit about it last night. I have worked in the aircraft industry (including setting rivets) and you can see them while its still in primer but flush rivets seem to disappear under paint unless you get real close. When the paint cracks and "weathers" it usuall starts at panel edges and rivet lines because of expansion and flex. All the quick release fasteners around access panels are obvious though. I think showing an impression of rivets is good on a model because it gives a feel of the nature of the thing but it would not be wrong to not have them. I think this "weathering" and so on effects is a fascinating subject in itself. Lots of photos to look at, museum exhibits to see....... an endless task. Sorry I seem to be geeking. I look forward to your deep dive into effects as I seem to have taken the plunge to try building a model again and would like to do a better job than I used to.

Fair Warning, MR Riveter was on shift when they moulded the Trumpeter Tomcats - there's rivets in places where there's never been rivets! Same chap was on shift when they made the 1/32 A-6...

Watching this one with interest before I tackle mine. What is the make of the single riveter that you're using, please ( i.e. not the Rosie one)?
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels Год назад
Hi David, its a U-Star riveter. I also use a punch set to make slightly larger and fastener circle shaped ones (the wooden handle version). I may need to go over them again once I'm in primer to see if they are deep enough...
@maxbrandt6
@maxbrandt6 Год назад
So Revell just upscaled their quarter scale Tomcat and recessed the panel lines, this is an old kit too looking at the box art.
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels Год назад
Its an ancient kit, the Tamiya is nearly as bad though, although some details are better. Trumpeter is the most detailed but has some wrong shapes and rivets and panel lines....there's no really really good 1/32 F-14 unfortunately....
