1/72 scale Full-scratchbuild Sazabi
This is my second attempt in scratch-building a Sazabi model. The now (SO) popular Msn-04 has always been my favorite Mobile Suit in Gundam series, since I first saw it in ’91 or so. At that time Bandai has not a good model version of it, and just Kotobukiya and Wave gave justice to this iconic design, in form of very expensive resin, soft-vinyl and multi-media pieces.
By the way, now lease, allow me a step back of almost 20 years.
I did my first Sazabi “Kallamity Version” in 2001. At that time I was not good at drawing mechs at all, so I’ve not been able to plan such a challenging project like this properly and I over-sized the model too much. This was my first entire scratch-build project I ever did and the whole thing was made out of tons of Milliput, Styrene and other pieces, using both everyday-use objects and model pieces too. This project was abandoned after 9 months of hard work and it’s still unfinished and sits longtime in a big carton. It weights almost 10 kilograms (22 lbs) and stands approximatively at 63 cm (24 inches). I still think about it, this was the kind of project which teaches you the most, above all about mistakes, but I’m pretty sure I’ll keep the courage to finish it some future days.
This second attempt was started in January 2019 and at the time of editing video is still unfinished, approximatively 95% done, so I did this video to encourage myself to finish it up this time.
This second Sazabi “Kallamity Version” is gonna be in 1/72 scale, more or less 35 cm tall (13,7 inches). This time I used a more versatile and “easy-to-use” material like Aves Apoxie Sculpt, but I forced myself to experiment the more techniques I could trying to full-scratch-build the whole amount of parts. Even if few parts were “stolen from Garbaldy (a previous kit I produced several years ago), I managed to do a lot of brand-new casting, creating master pieces, then duplicated with silicone rubber and resin, thanks to Prochima collaboration.
This has been A LOT of work, maybe the largest project I did, and like every challenging projects, I thought to have a rest from it. So here we are and I hope you’ll enjoy the project and the video, even if mostly done by WIP pictures.
