#1 A Hard Passage Lessons Learned - Sailing From New Zealand To Tubuai Austral Islands

In this vid we share our passage from New Zealand to Tubuai, Austral Islands. We chose to take the southern route in the higher latitudes where we picked up the westerlies to make almost 2000 miles of easting before we turned North towards our destination. By taking the longer and harder route we accomplished our goal while our friend chose the direct route and never made the destination instead ending up in the Cook Islands. We experienced several gales and a storm and also tell about our experience with our failed autopilot. Come and join us on our journey... Hope you enjoy the old footage😊

The fact that the original Spray could be balanced on a run is amazing. More so that your modern version can do also. I am guessing she has a deeper keel. It would be interesting to hear how you set her up balanced on all wind directions

Maybe you guys could discuss the electronics, navigation, refrigeration, power generation and conveniences you started out with compared to today. I'm concerned for those who live by their electronics and will be lost (literally) without them. A discussion of the good and bad of the arc of technology thru the years in the cruising world.

It brings to mind how often times I do suspect that wishing a sailor 'fair winds' may just cut a weebit inappropriate especially to those who love sailing. Your love for sailing the high seas confirms all that I thought to be true. Thank you for sharing such a lovely life.

This video well showed the sea state. I enjoyed Jules' log entry.. Making landfall after a tough passage all one thinks of is the long sleep. That and maybe a dessert treat. But the well deserved sleep comes first. God bless Emerald Steel and those who sail her.

@@SailingEmeraldSteel I had kind of wondered the same thing about a cockpit while looking at some of your other videos. It's always great to hear of real experience and what worked in actual conditions. It would be really interesting context to know when this was, so much has changed since you started. I still have my plastic sextant from the early 80's, back when I was hoping to get away sailing. Really glad that you two were able to, and thanks for sharing your stories. And in such an honest, no manufactured drama, format.

I don't comment too often but I watch as many of your videos as I can. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. They are very entertaining and informative. I quite like your comments on sailing and cruising. In this video, the seas appear quite large, especially given that waves don't appear anywhere near as large on the screen as they really are. Do you by any chance have a video that shows your vessel and how you have set her up for passage making? I am playing around with one of my sailboats, and am experimenting with many different modifications. You have been a big help with deciding what to do. Thanks again.

Great sailing although sometimes more than you wished for. We had big seas and winds like that from Aruba to Panama. 4 days of it was enough but we were lucky with the autopilot and little worry about broach with the swing keel almost all the way up. Didn’t mean I didn’t worry and glad when it was over.

I really like your videos. You offer a great look at what it takes to live the life. As a suggestion, if you make the videos a little longer (20 mins.) RU-vid will be more likely to monetize them. I know, I know. No sense in being free only to become a slave to RU-vid. You perform a great service. Forget I said anything and keep up the good work.

How many times have you gone west to east. Is there any easy way? I want to sail the South Pacific but get my boat back to North America to sell when I am done. I will get a cat and it will not point very high. Also I can’t imagine pointing into waves. Feels slow and miserable.
