And so there you escaped from the treadmill of a mediocre life, and started your voyage of discovery that most people only dream of but never do. Such a great story indeed. May it continue for you both! 👍🏼😊🙏🏼
No, not boring. As an Air Force fighter pilot for 27 years, I've been to a lot of the world, but your stories put a whole new perspective on travels. Thanks for sharing.
Your sleep schedule while sailing, reminds me of our earlier European ancestors and their habit of 1st and 2nd sleep. They would go to sleep shortly after sunset, for 4 hours or so, then rise to bake, or sew, or clean and even visit neighbors. Then, with several hours of darkness left, would return to bed till daybreak. Maybe, this too was healthier than our modern day work schedules.
i waited until now to say it was good to hear you dream, challenges, and effort to get away from a life which most are unhappy with, you sailed after all your works, and made it to Hawaii🏝🏝 showing your faith, by your works. very nice, and thank you so much⛵⛵
Great story and knowing a little bit about how Jules operates that was probably the last time Jules took advice from someone without his self double checking on anything, Emerald Steel is a fine Sailing vessel, Meeting Bob was a rare opportunity to learn a few importent life aboard sv first hand experience
No, the details were not boring at all. If you are truly interested in something, the details are the best part. The editing was a little choppy, so I'm not sure i understood everything you said, but it sounded to me like, even as young and inexperienced as you were, you were very careful about preventing someone going overboard. Good. I have just discovered your excellent channel, and will be watching the videos in order from the beginning, way back at the crack of time.
I was so impressed by your ability to set sail with little money to your name. Confidence in one's skills and the power of a dream can lead to remarkable journeys. Your videos teach us a lot about life. What works and what doesn't!
Jewels, you ended up with one hell-of-a-fine boat, but from the beginning to now, Susan has always been the STAR of your life and you are a very lucky man! God bless both of ya and keep the faith!
Not a word was boring. We all have are own way of doing things onboard and it is so interesting hearing about your methods. First trip is always the hardest but well begun is half done. You always seem to make the most of what you had. I love the story of Bob Carr who certainly was a legend in his own right.
Yes, while Jules was telling the story, Susie was reliving the experience. You could see it in her eyes and smile. Great loving couple with millions of miles under their belt. Just love the videos, thanks for sharing.
Watching the two of you remember your own life and not be bored how could you even imagine that others would be? Keep telling your amazing story and making many of us jealous and some of us even inspired.
Thanks for the vids you make I use them a great deal in how I am going about setting my own boat that I am fitting out now as I write this Even though I have had a couple of boats in the past, this boat I am doing now is a complete fit out of a bare hull that I bought last year . It has been really quite a project and it is coming along as I can afford to do it , but your own project and how you have done a powerful lot of it has saved me a great deal of time and money. and , given me twenty years of yours experience without me having to have the ordeal of doing the sailors apprenticeship as I have gone along, as you have done a lot of it for me and been so free in passing that knowledge on to others such as myself. although you didn't have to do this So! Once again thank you for sharing so freely a and educationally all this knowledge you have learned over a long time
I think I know the smell you are talking about. I remember it after getting off the plane in Hawaii for the first time on the island of Kawaii back in the early 1970s and being outdoors for the first time after the long plane ride. It was the smell of Plumerias in bloom (mixed with citrus) which increased exponentially when we were presented with leis made from Plumerias at the airport and wore them for days until they wilted.
Most interesting to listen to your first sailing adventures. Building the boat seems to have been a challenge but you made it happen. Congratulations to both of you. Happy sailing.
Love the simplicity of old style sailing. Electronics are good but you just can not go wrong with a sextant, chart and a good watch. Sail safe guys. Ant & Cid xx SV Impavidus.
Fantastic to hear how you first set off. You are both real sailors with so much experience to share, many of todays boaters could learn a lot from you, I hope they watch your videos. I still sail with a sextant too, also I have a handheld GPS a watch and a handheld VHF that i keep in a biscuit tin in the oven if it looks like there may be lightning around.
Not bored at all. I think I could watch you guys everyday. I've seen your story a few times now and it's always the most interesting and instructional videos. You have really lived your dream God Bless.
Entertaining and educational video, thanks...subscribed. I really enjoyed all the older photo images...I recently pulled out several books filled with our old sailing Caribbean, Atlantic, Europe...we were all so young then! new boat, new adventures, looking forward to following yours! Thanks, Andrew
Never bored listening to you two, The details are fascinating and educational. Thank you again for all you have shared and all I have learned. Cheers and Fairwinds
I'm glad that you started picking up radio stations in Hawaii, showing that you were on course. It might have been disconcerting if you had started picking up Radio Samoa. lol. Nice video, as usual.
...wheres the book? Ooh!! A movie! Anyway, great story!! Smelling earth? The senses must be starving by the end of such a long passage! Those photos are great when added with the story! Thanks for sharing.
Not starving, rather very acute. All you smell is saltwater, then because that is really the only smell, it sort goes away unnoticed. Although you can smell rain (fresh water) before feeling it. First sail back to HI from the mainland I could smell the flowers while still 300 nm out. Then the earth, so pungent it stings the nostrils. One trip I smelled a school of Ahi. I told the other guy to get ready we're gonna get some bites. He looked at me like I was crazy as we hadn't caught anything for several days. Then....ZING! A double hook-up.
Excellent. Really loving the retelling of your story. Team work is the key to life. We will never get bored of the details. :-) Fair winds & regards from the UK
I'm a total noob coming in to the sailing world but I'm already staring at the same capitalistic influences on the businesses and industries surrounding the sailing world and I'm realizing that this is one of the prevailing reasons I think why people consider moving to the water, to escape the high cost of living in land. I am convinced that for one to succeed in this transition everyone should be able to do their own work. Otherwise it will remain as expensive or more compared to being landlocked.
Kitchen chores. Jewels, you grew up when men were men and boys were boys. Susan had her jobs and she knew, "You" had your jobs. That's why, you two were successful in your travels.
' I have a request..... Can you guys do a short video of your man playing the opening song? I want to watch the fingering and learn the cords as he has already stated that he doesn't have the tabs for it. I must learn this song! lol! love you guys! thanks for all you do.
Hi, Here are the chords....A minor, F, G, A minor then repeat. Then C, D, F, A minor. Then start from beginning. Hope that helps. If you have any questions just ask. The full song is called On My Way under Sailing Emerald Steel videos. Jules
Salmon cakes. Sorry...never again. My mom served us that so many time I can't even think about it. I can eat egg protein and oatmeal for ages...but not fish. I never noticed the tuner above Susan's left shoulder before. Also Patreon'd up this week,...thought I already was.
I noticed from the photo at 4:35 that Emerald Steel had wheel steering, and in your previous videos I noticed you using a tiller. Am I mistaken? Or was this something that was changed along the way? If so, why the change?
Good video. I was just wondering about how you kept potatoes from rotting, did you keep them in a vented box? Same for carrots, onions, apples, oranges?
I always enjoy your videos. Unfortunately, I am unable to Like/Dislike nor Share as those selections are absent for me and my LoggedOn icon also missing. RU-vid is on some sort of gaming its system, I guess. Anyways a comment is probably better as it gives actual interaction with the viewer/subscriber. Oh, I guess I'm first. Woopee.
