There are some really unique sounds here. The Jackson and Dean have interesting bite. The Gretsch is very chewy, I dig it. The Tele is super rad with how it maintains the single-coil twang but without the screech factor. Most balanced to me overall though, was the Ibanez.

@@rtaylor1105 yes in his first 2 guitars, I believe. Then it becomes about endorsements and money. So Seymour Duncan reverse engineers the Lawrence to the Dimebucker. But it is different as was Dime's Lawrence, which wasn't bone stock. Dimebuckers have ceramic magnets instead of alnico. The move to Wahburn allowed SD to have less risk making the Dimebucker. So only the Washburns had Dimebuckers. The Deans had Lawrence pickups, although customized.

PIckups are an interesting thing, as they seem to influence the tone in either subtle or completely obvious ways. Speakers make a massive difference in tone all the time. Amps have subtle character differences (when comparing like for like - obv clean and driven sound different.) But pickups seem to do both.

Astonishing riff! Great video. Goes to show what to pick in the expensive amp vs guitar discussion. Thanks for posting the scale lengths and pickups. The one with the SD59 does sound like Chris Impellitteri's riff tone, and he uses them supposedly on all his guitars.

Man Jared’s guitar sounds good. It’s a toss up between that and the Solar with Fiahmans for me. I was really surprised that compared to the rest I didn’t like the JL7, too much weirdness in the high mids I think. But I think the takeaway is that single coils just sound weird for metal haha.

The Washburn won for me. I've always loved Dimebag's tone. However, the Dean sounded very thin by comparison.

Yeah the Dean had a twangy sound to it.

Aah, the Mighty E-Tuning! Call me oldschool or something but i REALLY like when you play riffs like this in E. Im more like the E - Eb type of guy.
@JohnWiku

I can say the same, having lots of guitars with different tunings, for some reason I'm always back to the ones tuned in E standard! An E standard chug sounds so much better than any other tuning IMHO.
@nicholasbstone
@nicholasbstone 2 года назад
Agreed! E tuning might not sound great at low volume through a bedroom practice amp, but through a cranked high gain tube amp it's almost a requirement!

Damn that Fender Strat sounded HUGE, Really liked how even it sounded, maybe a little less bitey than others but it definitely has a lot of punch, The Solar sounded quite similar to me. Maybe somewhat ironically the Dean was my least favourite, but only because of the Dimebucker's highs which I've never been a fan of.

I'm really impressed by that Solar. It manages to have a beefy tone that doesn't compromise on treble, which seemed hard for some of the others to pull off. Fishmans were such a good choice for the brand.

It’s more than likely those active pickups carrying a LOT of the weight, not necessarily the guitar itself.

I feel like your Strat has the most balanced tone overall. If I had to track rhythm and lead, I would use the Strat for rhythm and the (more mid focused) Jackson for the solos.

I really like the Custom Shop Strat. Maybe this medium output pickup helps to maintain clarity and articulation. Most of the more modern pickups sound a bit too bassy/ooompfffy for my taste.

Hey Ola! I love the video and did a little test here at home as well using your video! I tried three different earphones and the results were always different in which guitar I liked the most. This was really helpful because sometimes I hate my tones and when I switch my headphone it sounds killer! Lots of different parameters and variables in order to sound good everywhere, which, btw you always do! Keep up the great work and bring more videos of you drumming!

Really cool idea and as you both have a lot of amps aswell as a lot of guitars, I'd be happy to see more of those! My favorites were the Southern Cross and JPM I'd say... but I have to admit, that both the strat and the tele both had a really cool flavor which made them stand out aswell.

Just floored by how consistent Ola is between takes. Incredible metal machine! As far as differences with guitars I decided to do a blind test and see if I could pick out the different guitars. The only time I was able to tell a difference was when he switched to single coils. Definitely a more sharp and trebly tone. Wonder if putting rails and a 500k pot would have mitigated this? Great vid Ola!
