Hi to answer your question about the rhythm about the percussion that was used. It's known as Thapanguthu/Koothu in South India. Predominantly uses various percussion instruments in different styles/beats, to which people dance to in a style also known as thapanguthu. Im unclear about origins (and I could be wrong) but I believe it was used for dancing in funeral processions/mourning or festivals during folk dances but started to get integrated into pop-culture and gained mainstream popularity. And that's why you will often find such beats/rhythm in South Indian songs predominantly.
