For THIS reason and others, I'm glad every day of my life that I chose Broadway Joe as my all-time favorite NFL player. In Joe's case, statistics are MEANINGLESS. It's what he did for NFL football. Like putting it on the map. The first two Super Bowls were not even sell-outs. Nobody cared. Joe changed all of that.

JOE NAMATH was persecuted by the Media so much before this game - that he didn't even want to talk to them after the game. He got the MVP - and was a rock star after this game .Too bad he didn't win at least 5 more rings, but he got hit in the knees so much during his career he could only play 11 seasons.Lucky he can still walk.Guy threw a mean spiral pass.

This is a greater upset then super bowl XLII because you need to think of how the AFL was viewed. The Giants beating the Patriots was shocking, but they where both NFL teams. Just if an XFL team beat the Patriots, that's the kind of upset this was, what was seen as a team from a minor league beating the NFLs best
@altonwilliams7117
@altonwilliams7117 3 года назад
Those AFL teams like the Chiefs, Raiders, and Jets were underestimated because of great teams like the Packers and Colts but the AFL had some great teams too and many times more fun to watch.

Everyone who says he's overrated obviously knows NOTHING about the history of professional football. Joe Namath was the FIRST quarterback to pass for 4000+ yards in a single season. Oh and he was the FIRST AFL quarterback to beat an NFL team in the super bowl, thus leading to the merger that is now the modern- day NFL.

The most important game in pro football history. That being said, I really wish that the rest of the league would have listened to Al Davis and kept the leagues separate. Instead of a merger, call it Major League Football, and send all of the expansion teams to the AFL until the numbers evened out. A truly tantalizing possibility. Because the merger happened, and they wanted to go 13-13, this is the only Super Bowl that, barring a realignment, can never be duplicated.

The reason this game was a big upset was the ramifications. without this upset, there may have never been an AFL/NFL merger.
@Tyrunner0097
@Tyrunner0097 2 года назад
The merger was already going to happen, but the disparity between the two leagues would've been drastically different afterward if it hadn't been for this upset. Even though the NFL was publically embarrassed by this, Pete Rozelle actually was grateful for this upset privately, because it lessened the argument about which league was superior and it also gave the Super Bowl much-needed publicity as the real championship game of pro football. Rozelle, after Super Bowl 3, said to his closest colleagues, "This loss might be the best thing to ever happen to us."

Joe Namath was a great passer. No doubt about it. I watched the game. But, if you ponder the final score, you have to acknowledge that it was the Jets' defense that won the game. It held the powerful Colts scoreless, until one of the greatest veteran quarterbacks of all time, Johnny Unitas, was called in. He quarterbacked the Colts' to their only points. But it was too little and too late.
@tygrkhat4087
@tygrkhat4087 5 лет назад
Before Super Bowl III, Pete Rozelle said that playoffs may be skewed so "NFL" teams would play in the Super Bowl, not an "AFL" team. The irony is, five times in the 1970s an "NFL" team represented the AFC in the Super Bowl, Baltimore and Pittsburgh four times.
@lcrossmk8563
@lcrossmk8563 5 лет назад
Didn't the Dophins and Raiders rule the AFC in the '70s? The Patriots were good in the latter half as well.
@TheSSUltimateGoku
@TheSSUltimateGoku 2 года назад
@@lcrossmk8563 The Dolphins made it to the Super Bowl 3 straight years in the 70s and won 2 but they were coached by head coach Don Shula an NFL disciple head coach. With an NFL philosophy playbook. The Raiders were really the only AFL team that had an original AFL philosophy within their team that were always Super Bowl contenders and of course eventually did win a Super Bowl in 1976 season. So most of the teams that represented the AFC post full merger of 1970 mostly were either 1 of 3 teams NFL teams that took the $2 million to move to the new AFC conference to even out the conferences, or AFL expansion teams that had NFL like head coaches with NFL playbook philosophies. Colts, Steelers and then The Dolphins coach by Don Shula. There were the Denver Broncos in 1977 however they got crushed in the Super Bowl by the Cowboys and by that point most of the teams players and coaches were from the NFL by that point.

The Jets dominated the game because Unitas wasn't playing (he was injured). When Unitas DID go in in the 4th quarter (remember, he's injured, but he dragged himself off the bench and demanded to go in), he led the Colts down the field for their only touchdown. By then, it was too little too late. Had Unitas played the entire game, there's absolutely NO DOUBT the Colts would've won. Unitas was 100 times a better QB than Namath could EVER hope to be.

Joe Namath is the most overrated QB in NFL history.

FullmetalNinja25 you watched Namath play?

Are you basing it of fantasy football stats or are you a Giants fan? He was the most dynamic QB of his day and was the face of not only a team but a whole league.

Most dynamic QB of his day? Are you fucking kidding? Namath had a great arm and a big image, but his play was a joke, there was nothing dynamic about it. I've seen practically every snap of his career, and Namath knew as much about reading defenses as he did reading Sanskrit. You want "dynamic", look up Daryle Lamonica (he was literally the AFL's best QB and was still a threat in the NFL), or Johnny Unitas who was universes better than Namath. The OP is correct, Namath was a fraud.

FullmetalNinja25 He was the first QB to pass for 4000+ yards in a season.

+Enrique Godinez Good for him. He also led the league in INT's that year, just like he did 4 different times in his career.

this game was rigged
@MrEdwardCollins

Do you have any evidence for this claim? Any evidence at all? Who was in on this rigging? The head coaches? The assistant coaches? The coaches on _all_ of the teams or just a few of them? The NFL owners? All of the owners or just a few of them? The players themselves? _All_ of the players or just a few of them? Were any of the referees in on this rigging? All of them or just a few of them? Or maybe it just the employees in the NFL office? If so, were all of these employees aware of this or just a select few of them? Were other games rigged back then? Who decided which team should win? _When_ was this decision made? The night before? The week before? A few hours before? Were the sportsbooks in Vegas in on it? If so, were all of them aware of it or just a few? How long had this rigging been going on? Five years? Ten years? Twenty years? How come no one has ever come forward with any _actual evidence_ (phone calls, recordings, letters, sworn testimony, etc) for this conspiracy you're claiming? How come no one has won a Pulitzer Prize with evidence for this mass conspiracy you claim? The time to believe in something is when there is _actual evidence_ to believe in it. Not before. And yet you're implying and have a belief for something there is absolutely zero evidence for. I'm curious... what else do you have a belief in? Leprechauns? Fairies? Pink unicorns? Bigfoot? Teapots named Russel orbiting the sun between Earth and Mars? The Loch Ness Monster? Gods?

Edward Collins Bubba Smith provided a lot of evidence in an interview he did in 2004
@MrEdwardCollins

@@NPC-je8ix I read the transcript of the interview. You can read it online. (You can probably also listen to it online.) I'm talking about _evidence_. Bubba Smith was making _claims_. He had ZERO evidence. He claimed quarterback Earl Morrall was in on this "fix" and purposely threw the game. He claimed the Colts owner bet three million dollars on the Jets. And yet he had no evidence for either of these claims, of course. Bubba said Johnny Unitas was put in for Earl Morrall when there was just six minutes left to go in the game. That's not true at all. Unitas took over for Morrall in the third quarter and even Unitas could only generate one drive for one touchdown. Tom Matte had 116 yards rushing and yet half of those yards came on one play! The Jets defense contained him quite easily. Bubba Smith can't accept the fact that his team lost, and he was grasping at anything he could to try to maintain his dignity.
