Walsh LIVED for having his players compete. His mentality was, "oh, Joe thinks, he's the best things since sliced bread? I'm going to get this other guy, Steve Young out here just so that he KNOWS that he isn't safe." He absolutely LOVED that QB controversy. In a 1987 divisional playoff game, Bill straight up took Joe out of the game because he was struggling a little bit and put steve in there. They lossed vs the vikings, and because of that loss, Eddie D was fuming with anger and told Carmen Policy to tell Bill that he was fired. Carmen talked him out of that but eventually did strip Bill from his president/gm role. Bill didn't try any funny stuff after that. But that's what made Bill the GOAT coach. He thought no one was untouchable. He traded the greatest players once they didn't prove useful (like Joe and Ronnie Lott). Coaches nowadays just play it safe and refuse to create tension that is needed amongst his players to get them playing in an elite level.

The best coaches get everything out of both rookies and veterans and sometimes the only way to get veterans to up their game is to give them challenges even if people on the outside think it's a distraction.

Joe Montana was traded and Ronnie Lott signed elsewhere after Bill Walsh had retired.

What would you respect from one of the people who thought Montana was a god. Young never bad mouthed Joe in his life. The same could not be said of Montana. He treated Steve like crap. It is the NFL and Joe was on the decline. In fact if Walsh was the coach instead of Seifert he would have been replaced earlier. Players are not owed their positions due to respect. It's a business and they get paid a lot of money to play. The team owes them nothing but their salary. Besides you do not look old enough to have been around when the issue between Joe and Steve was coming down. Steve was always gracious to Montana, but the same could not be said for Joe in respect to Steve. Joe undercut him with the team at every turn. They treated Steve like crap. They O-line even would let defenders through when both QB's were sharing time in the same game. Your mention of his complaining about not getting playing time pretty much reflects you deluded attitude. That is the same attitude that Joe had in respect to Steve. He didn't like Steve because Steve wanted to be a starter and was not happy being a back up. He liked Bono because he knew his place . What arrogance to believe that no one should even dare to think about challenging him for HIS position. Joe was not as good as he and many of his fans believed him to be. He was not untouchable. In the Min. playoff game he was stinking it up but Seifert didn't have the guts to pull him until towards the end when it was too late to make up for the huge deficit. Steve was moving the offense and scoring but it was too late. I have been a Joe Montana fan since he was playing for ND in college but he couldn't even live up to the legend he became over time.

WILTALK Walsh was the head coach during the Minnesota playoff game not Steve. Also you are painting Joe in an subjective light that’s clearly biased against him. Joe was at his peak in 88’ and 89’ he won back to back MVPs now Steve is obviously great but Joe is a top 3 QB all time. So when you are the best at a job where Job security is hard to come by and all of a sudden the company hires someone who threatens your future at that company you tend to get competitive. And that’s what Montana was the ultimate competitor, he wanted that job he wanted that position now that being said everybody makes mistakes and Montana may not have always been fair but Steve and Joe were two completely different people and players and to compare their behavior isn’t getting the full story. Montana might have gotten 5 rings and kept being the starter if it wasn’t for the Leonard Marshall hit that essentially took him out for 2 years. Both were great but to fault an all time great competitor for being competitive is ridiculous and not showing the full story

There was quite a bit of turnover from 1989 (the last time Joe won the SB) to 1994 when Steve won. In fact, only 4 players from the 1989 team started in the 1994 Super Bowl. Jerry Rice is a BIG piece, of course. But the others were TE Brent Jones, Jessy Sapulo on the O line, and John Taylor as the other WR. Outside of Sapulo, the entire O line was rebuilt, and there was an entirely new backfield with Rickey Watters and William Floyd replacing Roger Craig and Tom Rathman. Meanwhile, the front office did a FANTASTIC job in free agency and the draft to acquire major defensive talent to replace the losses of Charles Haley, Michael Carter and Ronnie Lott among others. They drafted Bryant Young, Dana Stubblefield, and Merton Hanks (All Pro Bowlers), and managed to convince future HofF players like Deion Sanders and Rickey Jackson to come over in free agency. Why did those guys come over in Free Agency, and not go somewhere else? Because they saw that with Young, the Niners were legit Super Bowl contenders, and that no doubt influenced their decision.

No doubt, if the roles had been swapped I don't think there would have been much of a difference in the overall success of the team. I think Young in the right circumstances would have put himself right in the debate with Montana and Brady, or maybe he would have even made it less debatable. He was that good.

There were games where Young started and Montana was on the bench! That's why they loved this, two great starters where either could play, and dominate.

It’s not easy to compare QBs from different eras, but I’d rather have Favre and Rodgers. It’s not even close. Let’s not forget Young and Montana had the best WR of all time and also played on the team with the highest payroll before the salary cap in 1994. The biggest difference is the 49ers had those QBs starting for 18 seasons from 1980-1998. Favre and Rodgers have given the Packers 28 seasons from 1992-the present.
