When I restarted to play chess after a 30-year hiatus the first chess channel I subscribed to was GothamChess. The sheer amount of videos and chess knowledge is amazing. Learning value for intermediate players is not all that high because you can't just analyze games to death if you want to keep a broad audience interested but especially the 10-minute opening series is invaluable. Congratulations, you worked really hard and deserve every subscriber. Thank you, Levy.

5:05 Ah yes, my favorite checkers rule where you always have to capture the queen whenever possible
@debblez
@debblez 2 года назад
okay you might not believe this, but I looked it up and (apparently) official checkers rules say that if a piece can capture another piece, it HAS to. I have literally never heard that rule in my life nor has anyone ever called me out for likely having cheated when playing, but its very much a rule, and is even stated in the first sentence of the wikipedia article on checkers.
@isavenewspapers8890
@isavenewspapers8890 2 года назад
@@debblez What? Why would I not believe this? The implication of my sarcastic remark was, “No rule in checkers states that capturing the queen is mandatory if possible.” Which is true for all variants of checkers, if only because a prerequisite for a queen to be captured is that it kinda has to exist in the first place. In English checkers (the most popular 8-by-8 variant and what most English speakers refer to as “checkers”), the rule regarding capturing is that if it is possible, then it must be done. Applying that rule in the position referenced in the video, Black can capture either the queen or the knight. So, even if we did use the checkers rule, capturing the knight would be legal. However, let’s give Levy the benefit of the doubt. For you see, there are checkers variants wherein capturing not only is mandatory but also must yield the most value. If we use the chess piece relative value system here because we might as well, the queen’s 9 points is greater than the knight’s 3. Thus, perhaps fans of Frisian checkers would have something to say about the situation, and I suppose there’s not really a good reason not to listen to them anyway. I believe that there is no single “official” checkers, as you say. If someone says, “Let’s play chess!”, then you know what you’re getting yourself into, but the sentence, “Let’s play checkers!”, is not so unambiguous. I digress. Even in English checkers, it’s not mandatory for any given piece to capture if it is able. If several of your pieces can capture, then you are free to use whichever one you like. In fact, you can only move one piece per turn, so in this instance, not only is it not mandatory to capture with every piece that can capture, it’s not even possible. One reason you might not have heard of the mandatory capture rule is that it doesn’t exist in the variant that you’re playing with whoever these other people are. Yes, that is possible. Wikipedia lied. The only example I could find on Wikipedia is the Free Capture version of Myanmar draughts, but there might be more. Somehow, though, I have a suspicion that you’re not from Myanmar. Fret not about cheating, though. If you unintentionally disobey a rule, it’s not cheating. So you can rest easy there.

The majority of the last year and half has been terrible, I was recovering from a horrendous breakup where I was emotionally manipulated and they tried to kill themselves multiple times. It was very hard for me to have any self respect afterwards, but I got really into chess even though I'm only an 1100. I started watching your channel last June and haven't stopped, when I started I was a 600 but I even bought a course I was so dedicated. Chess became a comfort for me, something that couldn't be taken away, and for the last year I've been looking forward to your videos everyday before I go to sleep. It's helped me regain myself and I would say it even saved me. When I was very young I used to really enjoy the game of chess and would always lose to my grandpa, but one day I didn't have a chessboard or anyone to play with so I stopped playing entirely and it kind of faded into the recesses of my mind. Now 10 years later I have new passion for it and it's really thanks to you and the resurgence of chess as a whole. If I hadn't been introduced to online chess I may have never went back. Heading into last Christmas season i got inspired to pick chess back up again because of the Queen’s gambit. Chess had been a pretty big part of my college years with friends on res but I had some pretty bad habits back then and wasn’t able to grow like I did picking it back up this past year or so. Last year when this started, I also was on the verge of starting a new life in a new hometown and little did I know with my life partner around the corner too, all on the positive upswing from our Covid experience getting better where I live, and I introduced a friend in this new hometown to chess which he took wholeheartedly to and shared with me your channel - nearly a year ago! Since then, you’ve been a staple in my new home, on my tv and on my phone, alongside agadmator, and my chess growth and understanding has been so much better than ever (still an 1100 though :|) but chess and your channel have both been an essential part of this amazing happily ever after era in my life, and I thank you so much for your entertaining videos, your no bs attitude that is sometimes just funny but also some times what is needed with the internet. Also, your honesty with the camera about your life and perspective. It’s just been awesome

I played chess since I was 5 years old at a community center camp in Las Vegas. Became a swimmer and didn't play for most of my adolescence. Got a chess set for my first apartment in 2018, and in 2020 I was inspired by you and GM Danya to play online. PogChamps is still my favorite tournament, but I now watch most tournaments like I do my other favorite sports. I am lucky enough to have had the opportunity to attend my first chess tournament in May at the National Open in Las Vegas. As a spectator, I felt privileged to have witnessed people like you and the penguin GM play in front of my eyes. (PS I was the one who said you had a hard-fought match after that excruciating endgame with GM Timur Gareyev, and you thought i said "that was a hard and fun match". I started playing chess when I was around 6 and played at least every other week while I was in school. Then dropped it for the most part during college and eventually discovered Agadmator and chess apps. His videos are great and arguably I like them more for high end games, but seeing them reminded me why I stopped playing chess. I despised (still do) having to learn openings and depending on deep, mostly perfect calculations. So I dropped chess again after playing very little and floating around 1200-1400. Your channel brought me back to play with way more joy than ever. I unironically believe your joking statement that low elo, chaotic games are the best of chess. I like to danger the levels as high as possible and hang as many pieces as is reasonably playable, then play whatever feels right in hopes that the other player doesn't find a solution. It's the closest I can get to the good part being past 1400 now. Your guess the elo and how to lose at chess series always push me to play a couple games and I can't thank you enough for it.

I just kind of dicked around there, not taking anything too seriously, just having fun. I didn’t know a single opening and lost a lot. When I went to college I stopped playing completely. I picked it back up again last February (my senior year) bc of the chess boom and bc my friends were starting to beat me and I couldn’t let that happen.
