With regards to the proposed size of the pole barn: Make it bigger than you need now as you will find it pretty small when all your machines are parked in it. Great video Nathan thumbs up.

I like the way that you lay out for your screws. I do the same type of lay out when hanging sheetrock. I know that you won't see the screws when it's done but I feel better about making sure that they are all spaced equally and going into the center of the stud. BTW, I heard that there are some chickens in your neck of the woods that are pretty upset that their home isn't finished. They said the landlord keeps telling them that he will put some siding on the house but he just never gets around to it. They say that they are keeping their end of the deal and laying eggs and wish the landlord would finish the house. Said it's embarrassing and they can't have friends over. Thanks for the video

Nathan, I took woodshop/metal shop classes all through high school. Back then, they tied a drafting class in with the woodshop class. We had to scale and draw our projects prior to getting turned loose in the shop. That's where it all began for me and my love of woodworking.

Dust collecter: Instead of putting your blower on the very end, put it in the middle & use 1/2 the amount of intake hose. Maybe run the exhaust hose out the opposite wall, so that it could be shorter. Or have it terminate in a cloth bag inside a preferated 55-gallon drum.

The last time I built sliding doors was for horse stall doors. I used long nails. Hammer them tru then bend them in a U, and pound them back in on the other side. That was 1974 a that horse barn and those stall doors are still working like new, no repairs that I know of. That was my parents horse barn then . Now my grate Uncle and my cousins own it. It has had heavy horse usage for the last 50 yrs. Still as good as new. Sorry about the long note but it brought back a lot of memories.👍🇺🇸🐎🤪🍺

Help your dust collection by using smooth aluminum ducting on the back wall of your sawmill. Center it with the full travel of your mill. Connect the smooth duct to your fan. Use as little of the flex duct as possible because it causes turbulence which leads to clogging.

From a physics perspective, It seems if you reduce the size of your flex tube on the input side of your dust collector, it would increase the airflow and reduce the amount of clogging in the tube. Just reduce it down as close to the sawmill connection as possible, maybe before the tube reaches the floor. Hope that helps!!!

Not saying you do not need a larger dust collector, but you may find the biggest issue is the sudden 'neck down' you have from the big hose to the dust collector inlet. Eliminate that turbulence, and you may see the issues go away. Also, the amount of hose that lays and has no support can be an issue. I realize its necessary due to the length of travel of the mill, but if you can avoid it bunching up at all, that will help. Its a bit of a project, but suspending the hose in a way that allows it to travel more easily will help. If I were designing it, I'd put a solid turn up (not flex hose) on the outlet at the mill, go to an overhead system that holds the hose and drops it back at the wall so the dust collector is out of the way. Then you could vent the dust and chips other than in your work area on the loading side of the mill. All food for thought. Your situation may vary, and you know better than anyone what you need.

Hello Nathan, thanks for sharing this video. May I share an Autobody-Trick Ref: Any, Every and All Paint-Cans, with removal lids. To prevent Paint-Build-Up, in the area where the lid is pressed into the ridge top of the Paint Can. We would put a couple of holes via 16 Penney-Nail, sharpened. Any where from three - four holes, spaced approx. 1/4" in. apart. The Holes are punched at the lowest point, where / when the Paint-Can-Lid is re-attached to the can. Don't worry about the paint drying out, it's never happened. I'm talking approx. three to five year window, of material use / sitting idle, or more. Also Pour your paint on the portion (side) of the can that if covered with paint, you can still read the directions, or more importantly the Paint Code / Paint Name / or the Paint Mixing formula, to achieve the color you picked / wanted. Basically you'll want to pour on the "LEFT-SIDE," or the "RIGHT-SIDE," of the can, thus leaving no paint say at the 12 O'clock position (front of can), and same for the 6 O'clock (back of can.) Yes you can pour from the area you punched the holes, NO-PROBLEMS!!!

For twenty years I worked in a mill doing whatever it took to keep the saw in the log! Had several dust blowers and I was taught coming up that you couldn’t blow dust downhill very well. Gravity pulls it out of the air stream! Only uphill! My two cents. Love the videos. Keep up the good work!!

Nathan, I'm looking at time stamp 9:51 and I see two problems. First you need to remove the inlet "Y" and adapt the hose straight into the suction. You are restricting the air flow and causing some sawdust to settle in the hose and not flowing on through. Easy fix. Second thing I see is the discharge hose appears to be bent too sharply where it goes over the rails. If you unbolt the housing & rotate it so the discharge goes under the rail it will flow better.

Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts. I'm 72 now. My dad was an upholsterer. I started in Jr. high being interested in wood working and construction. Throughout Jr. high & highschool I learned architectural and mechanical drafting. When I started 9th grade I began a wood working project at home. I was about half way through my project when Dad asked me why I was so meticulous. I just said that I wanted it to last. He commented that anything worth doing should be worth doing right. I have never forgotten His comment. Many have accused me of doing overkill on my work but, I have never been accused of making junk that didn't last. Appreciate your attitude concerning your projects and your obvious creative expertise. Keep sharing. Stay safe, healthy, strong, wise and successful. Praying for you and your family.☝️🙏🙌🇺🇸❤️💪🎯☕🤠

Nathan, thanks for the videos. On your dust collector the issue is the flex hose size. It looks like you have a 6" or maybe 5" hose going into the 4" blower. It seems wrong but you need to step down to 4" coming out of your mill and use 4" all the way. The larger hose allows the sawdust to settle out of the air stream. Proof is I'm sure you clog between the mill and the blower in the larger hose and never in the 4" hose. The only other thing you can do is step up to a blower with a larger diameter. Hose should always be the size of your blower inlet or smaller.

I see several things that could be improved without spending a lot more money; 1) your vacuum feed is too low, the real vacuum should occur when your hose is fully stretched out (home position) 2) stand the motor on it's end that will change the out feed to a lower position (closer to the floor) less strain on motor out feed, 3) elevate the Suction hose to align with the suction motor, maybe a trough system to maintain control of the hose as you move the saw ( higher in home position and almost plane with suction motor. I would mount the motor to a metal plate with a thick rubber pad to absorb vibrations or a couple of 4X4 or 2X4 depending on the height you need and keep the metal plate from walking. You can use some of your trash wood to make the trough and the pieces of the tree you trim off cut them in half or size that elevates the hose to mount the trough to, you might need a 45 Degree rubber boot at the suction motor depending on the new elevation and angle where you put the motor. I am certain this will improve the vacuum feed but if it does not improve your vacuum system you will have proved the motor is under sized not the vacuum system, make a video(s) of what you decided to do I would like to see it.

In my experiance in a wood working shop you lift as muck as possible. You can get a pivot device to mount in the ceiling, keeping your hose off of the ground and , out of the way. Also a cyclone just out side of the building would keep most of the dust out of the air. I would look into a company that specalies in dust handeling equipment. with the cyclone you could park a trailer under it and it would be ready to go to the chicken dump when full.

Changing the diameter of the hose on the dust collector will increase the suction pressure. Easy intermediate fix. Will give you time to ponder on a good long term solution

The dust collector the inlet hose is too large. Use the same diameter hose that is on the inlet side of the dust collector. This will increase the vacuum (suction) and increase the air velocity within the hose.

Nathan have you considered the new building for your sawmill and maybe one pc of equipment. Your current building seems to small for the mill and you are always saying you want your controls out of the weather. When you park in the current shed your shop is right there for service.
@bradh74
@bradh74 7 месяцев назад
With all that new equipment you have the tools to fix that mud problem for good. You just need to run a few drains to divert that water and put stone, concrete or asphalt and your work area. I'd steer clear of asphalt but recycled asphalt is really cheap some places but it's made from petroleum products so you don't want that near your well water or down stream for that matter. Best part of living in Tennessee is you don't have to go far to find a hill for your drain to go to!

@johnaddis1022

Hi Nathan, Just a thought, your dust removal system may be jamming up because the dust is damp and it sticks to the flex pipe so easy. I cut on band saw too and noticed the dust on the ground was kinda crusty and not loose after a day or two, it may be due to the air drying it out faster. Mark Galicic uses a smooth pipe (which will not work with band mills) and a gas engine powered blower. Maybe you could talk with him. the blower he has may be able to use a 5 hp electric motor to develop enough vacuum to draw it out better. only other place I know of is Grizzly has some industrial extractors. Great video hope your doors are finished soon. Cheers! John Toccoa GA

Nathan, for what it's worth. I believe you may be trying to blow your shavings in the wrong direction, and it's due to the way the hose is routed. I believe it would work much better it you blew the dust out behind the wall that's to your left as you standing at your control station. You could shorten the hose going to the blower significantly, however you would have to step over it when you walk down that side of your saw. Just a thought.

Nathan, on your Harbor Freight blower. If you’ll take that side plate off and take the dual 4” off. Then cut out the inlet and rivet a 6” adapter to it, you’ll have much less trouble with it plugging up. There are also several replacement impellers you can buy to greatly increase the cfm’s of the blower to help it out also. I really enjoy your channel, keep up the great job. Richard Frank

I would agree that a smaller hose would increase the velocity and carry the chips better. Someone with the proper training could tell you the correct size to fit the correct fan size. I saw a video of a fellar that had his suspended from the ceiling. Worked good for the dust but everytime he went down the side of the mill he was ducking and dodging and having to push it out of the way. Ugg. I would think a U channel made with some of your lumber so the hose would curl back and forth like the cable track would be pretty good and not be so much in the way.

Why don't you use those pine logs to make your log lift table?

I do not run a saw mill but just a thought about your clogging. Would it help to move the blower extraction to the middle instead of at the end and change from the corigated plastic hose to smooth steel like on a gas dryer. Just a thought.

Hi Nathan. Watching and enjoying this video, and my wife (your biggest fan) still doesn’t understand the reasoning for quarter sawn wood. And medullary rays. Not sure how to explain what and why on either. Thanks!

I’m sure I’m probably wrong,as I know nothing about sawing logs. But it seems like there is a lot of waste,or the ability to get a couple more boarde.when you are quarter sawing a log . Is the quality of a quarter swan board that much better to offset the waste?

Nathan you got that big extraction fan on the moulder in the timber frame why can't you run one of them at the mill

Do you think that "Y" you have restricts the flow. And as someone else mentioned you could move your blower to the middle of the sawmill travel and blow it out the other side of the building. I'm no expert but just trying to help.
