Eh, it’s pretty clear from dialogue and context that these are mostly pearls that store his working memories, he uses them while processing to keep track of large amounts of information without storing it in his memory conflux. Sort of like RAM in a PC.

I mean, the reason they're called Iterators are because they're supposed to "iterate" on a solution - adding, trying and testing new solutions on repeat until the Triple Affirmative is found. So going through the same pearls over and over, 5p's probably tweaking some parameters and computing what happens, "iterating" on the solution.

Well a great majority of them is their can so who knows what thoughts are going on in there, probably more than enough to at least not be dull, and they have overseers to see anything they like.
