This is the first part in a multi part series about making a co2 laser from scratch.

You know, I was just trying to decide if it was worth it to buy a junked out 40 year old electron sputtering machine on ebay. But fuck it, I think I'll build my own now

I whould lean towards buliding your own not only will you save money but you will gain a deeper understanding of how thease things work and I know that's easier said than done

@allangles4020 I'm comfortable with the electrical side, electrical engineer by trade. I've got minimal machining experience is my only worry. Your skill as a metalworker is impressive as hell!

@@NaOHNoah There are a bunch of different magnetron options. Precision is not necessary, everything can be bolted together

To make a dielctric mirorr you need to control the thickness of the coating.

Apsloutly I'm working on using arduino to read a quartz crystal to try and make a crude thickness monitor similar to what applied science did

It is an amazing work! Please, tell me if your equipament could be used to aluminizing telescope mirrors. I'm a physicist but I don't have 10% of your technical knowledge and tools to make that sputtering equipament. Nevertheless, my great motivation is produce telescope mirrors by myself. In Brazil, the amateaur astronomers can count on a few professionals to aluminizer glass blocks. But the Brazil is a huge country and in my state I don't know anyone to make it by sputtering technique. My initial intent is learning to use the lathe, but I don't know the next steps. Could you give-me some advices?

Could you tell us more about your glass dome? What material is it made from? Did you buy a commercial part? Did you make the seal on the bottom of the dome--if so, what from?

Was a hefty purchase from vacuum belljars .com it's 315mm O.D and 356 mm height with 14mm wall thickness made from a single pice of borosilicate with a L shaped viton gasket .....

Thank you for your video!! How large is the gap between the stainless steel anode and the sputtering copper cathode, and why don't you run in to a problem with a plasma forming in between the stainless and copper on all sides since the copper is sheathed by the stainless? How large is the gap between the copper and stainless on the sides and bottom? Thanks again!!

I know commercial sputters can look like this as well, but I've never understood why they look like this. Do you have any references to resources that could help explain the design of sputtering chambers?

Good question and ide have to say the distance between the copper head and the sparkplug is just over 10cm both the copper head (- ) and sparkplug (+) are isolate from eachother the stainless steel cup I put over the magnetron is also isolated from the power scorce it also makes shur that the argon dose not degrade the sides of the sputtering head and enshurs im only sputtering what i want this in combonation with the magnets keeps the plasma confined in a doughnut shape inbetween the gaps in the magnets witch i asume you have in a halbatch array. .also if the power is on befor it reaches proper sputtering pressure's you can get some verry strange results and arcing that can damage seals .. this is the 4th magnetron head I've make in a viriaty of chambers any questions feel free to ask also input voltage is dc and calculated at between 600 to 800 v

The closest part between the stainless cup and copper head is about 3mm at the bottom and sides and is nearest at the top at around 1.5mm so if any arcing dose occur it will happen at the top of the head an not neer any seals

Do you have cad models or technical drawings and a materials list for this design? I’d like to replicate it if allowed for an educational/research project and I have all of the equipment minus the milling machine which will be built or bought beforehand.

Unfortunately I don't have any drawings I mostly design things in my head however your more than welcome to replicat it and I'm more than happy to help in anyway way possible.... this is the 4th one I've made and I used stainless 304 ...

Hello my name is Branden I also build lasers I am not privileged enough yet to have a lathe to help assist my endeavors, I just do as the universe wishes and for some reason things seem to always work out as long as I don't fight the universe! Right now I'm experimenting with yag crystals and I have one I already made with a bit of test substrate I made with chemistry and electrolysis I also scraped electronics for some high end material like gold. Anyways maybe you sputtered bizmark cause I need mirrors made of bizmark I would love to send you yag crystals if you would be interested in sending me mirrors and beam splitters. My end goal is to make a laser in Wich no electricity is needed simply put two materials in contact and lasing occurs. I plan on looking into verious proteins like bioluminescent fungi because fungi I can take nearly as much samples from as I need without having to harm a living creature, that is very important to me as stated before I live by the universe.

Sounds like a deal however bismuth mirrors don't look the best I'm guessing its because of the low melting point of bismuth

Thank you so much for sharing this great job, i have questions.you connected the + wire to the copper but where did you connect the negative wire? Do you have a diffusion pump as well or just a mechanic vacuum pump?

I believe I had the negative on the copper block and the positive went to an isolated hi-voltage electrical feed through aka (sparkplug) the sparkplug screwd into a kf25 adapter I had previously made ....

Yeah manny parts for that particular project I had bulit befor I started youtube and also Yes the argon flows around and over the sparkplug ......The kf25 cup that houses the sparkplug also has a tube protruding from the side in-witch the gass goes in .. I believe this helps to ionize the gas ..
