Hey Mike! My names Katie and I’m 12 years old. You have encouraged me to keep practicing my swimming over this summer. I never had swimming lessons either. But my mom and uncle were on the swim team when they were kids. But my mom has a bad knee where it feels like there’s a fist in her knee as some times. So the only one really helping me is my 16 year old big brother. He helped me learn to swim. Thank you for encouraging me so much. Keep up the AMAZING work!!

My swimming career was about 7 years long and at one point I was one of Norway’s best swimmers for my age group, I know this video is old but if anybody is reading this I can say this to anyone who is trying to get better now, swimming is hard. and it takes a lot of practice to get really comfortable doing it. But eventually it becomes as easy as walking. My tips becoming better at freestyle are take it slow, breath with one eye over the surface of the water, strokes shouldn’t be right beneath your chest; your arm should be at a ninety degree angle with your hand flat. And your kicks don’t need to be super fast or slow just make sure that they are comfortable in the background that way you can focus on other things. Those are not tips to be a pro, they are tips for beginners.

I swim competitively and in the ocean, your stroke just starts to fall apart due to the cold. Sometimes in the ocean, one or two breaths head up every now and then can really help correct stroke. Also, to get over cold shock, put you feet in the water for a bit before swimming. This is only needed in ocean because the pool is warm enough. However these tips are good for beginners.

@@dabdotnet nope-eroni.net, maybe at the most RU-vid original funding or a brand deal budget could allow for more expensive ideas though. Not that Mike couldn't make an amazing TV show, but you almost certainly would get less content. Making TV is 10x slower and involves hundreds more people. Mike's videos are special because HE'S the one making the content, it's personal. He could make a great TV show with the right network / team, but it wouldn't (and shouldn't) be like his RU-vid channel, and just because it's on TV wouldn't make it better content. Production value and money isn't the only thing that makes quality art. Careful what you wish for!

Make sure to be super careful man. I had a friend with me doing basically this in Newport Beach, CA in the Junior Lifeguards program when I was younger. It's called the monster mile. On the day we did it, the water was very cold, a little less than 55 degrees F. My friend had very low body fat, unlike myself with pretty average, so when he did it, something realllly bad happened. According to him, about halfway through the swim when the lifeguard said, "halfway down, halfway to go," he just doesn't remember from then on. When we got to the end of the mile, instead of swimming to shore he started swimming in medium-sized circles. The guards went out and grabbed him and brought him to shore. He was literally purple, and he couldn't speak or really do anything. They wrapped him in towels and put warm sand all around him. The next thing he said he remembers was when he woke up in the hospital covered in burning hot blankets while shivering uncontrollably. His lowest recorded body temp out of the water was in the 70's degrees F. You're normal body temp is 98 degrees F and death can occur below 70. Hypothermia is a scary thing folks.

Mike, please check out the Total Immersion swimming technique. Just watch a couple of videos. It's the most graceful, effortless technique you will find. I went from being able to do one length and having to stop to catch my breath, to doing 40 in a week with this technique. I've also passed this on to friends who do triathlons and it's revolutionised their style.

As an almost complete untrained begginer, why do you think your testimony is worth anything? I would pay attention if you were already experienced, and found that this technique *improved* your performance, but as it stands Ive only read testimony from absolute beginners. What sets "ti" apart from just basic efficient swimming technique. Your improvement can be attributed entirely to learning a few key basic techniques

Great job man.

Standing in a 21°C shower will be experienced as way colder than swimming in 21°C water as the shower water constantly will be evaporating, using heat energy from your body. That's why you'll cold when getting out of a shower. When fully enveloped in water, it will not behave this way and therefore not be experienced as cold

Its all about concentration! Ive been training myself to handle hard situations and staying calm. There is a thermal bath that ive been to where there are multiple pools that are incredibly hot, and there is one that is 6° C (42.8° F) that i was able to stay in for 25min (no problem) until an employee came and told me that I should get out of the cold water. But this shows that you can stay in the water without any training for a very long time just with concentration and will power!!
