As a skid steer mechanic, I have preached that for years. Thanks for the video, might help educate the masses.

Hi, If you turn the tape measure with the numbers facing the tread it will produce the results you are looking for.

I worked as a mechanic for 44 yrs. It was all most impossible to explain this to 4 wheel truck drivers. The binding and snapping in the transfer case and tire wear. And the jurky steering when in 4 WD. They all thought I was crazy for telling them there tires were a different size. an inch in height is close to 3 in circumference causes all kinds of problem.

NOW with so many AWD cars and SUV's on the market. Most people are having the same unexpected tire issues too! I know the Salesmen won't tell buyers about tire issues on a AWD vehicle. If they did most people wouldn't probably not buy one.

Yeah with trailers new tread depth takes more load and wears faster than older tire with less tread depth, but on a powered "drive axle", I liked the drive train "stress" increased explanation. That totally makes sense as a second reason to keep tread depths as close to matching. Tire life and drive train wear and tear accelerated due to non matching circumferences.

I would have thought the number one problem is farmers buy worn out skid steers that turn into money pits.

The same tip also plays for modern all wheel drive cars. You are best to run all the same radius tyres, otherwise you will eat your clutch packs in your diffs. Its been known people to replace just the front tyres with a slightly different tyre size, and it just eats the centre clutch
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 3 года назад
Jeep had a recall several years ago that required replacing the "temporary" spare tire with a full size spare tire on their quadra-trac equipped Grand Cherokees because of this. It would prematurely wear out the transfer case's viscous coupler due to it having different tire sizes all of a sudden it would also cause differential issues if it had the limited slip differential it would wear out the clutch pack in the differential as well. I think Subaru at one point if you had to put the spare tire on you had to pull a fuse under the hood to disable the all wheel drive system, thus turning it into a front wheel drive car when running the spare tire.
@HuserHelpers
@HuserHelpers 3 года назад
Hi Neil @2:15 you indicate your left and right sides are tied together. I think what you meant to say is "One each side, the front and rear tires are tied together". When replacing a tire, you need to make sure your front to back are close to the same size. The issue on right to left will be drifting of the machine when applying equal force to the travel levers. Great episode though, Jason

Circumference is diameter times Pi. So, that two inch difference on the Bobcat is a 6 inch travel difference.

Thank you for the video sir. Does your dealership deal with many skid loaders with tracks rather than tires? Or predominantly just tires. I have always wondered when one is preferable to the other.

The race drivers put a mark on the tire and a mark on the ground, rotate the tire once and measure the distance between the marks on the ground. It's more accurate than simply measuring around the tire. It's called "rolling radius".
@JonRheaume2282
@JonRheaume2282 Год назад
A lot of people that own these things. I wonder how they actually got to own one in the 1st place. They never check the pressure until one is flat. You're expecting a lot out of someone to think that they would rotate them yet check the pressure. When they do come in with a loose one in there pick up flat. I inflated to the recommended pressure. Which Eden creases the size. So I got mine at 45 and there at 20...:32 and 15 all the way around the vehicle.

Those of us farmers that run on very little concrete with no hard turning on concrete end up with tires that dry rot or get cut up before wear out. Had a tractor that had 1 set of tires in almost 40 years because tube was sticking thru sidewall yet plenty of lug left

To get the outside length of the tire measure the diameter and multiple by pi (3.1459) 1” diameter = 3.1459 outside. That 2 inch difference in diameter is 6 inches of outside circumference delta.

Please forgive me if you've answered this in a previous video but I was wondering how this info transfers into the world of tractors with "front wheel assist". For example: one of my front tires is new and the one on the other side is used. Can you elaborate on how this may or may not do damage on a four wheel drive tractor? thank you

Tire outside diameter is not rolling radius. Rolling radius is center of axle to ground when loaded. They might be pretty close when you have high side wall count and high pressure.

Tire rotation simple as that.....
@jaredmayer3960
@jaredmayer3960 3 года назад
There really is no effect on the driveline. If the dive line load was an issue you’d never want to force the bucket into a pile of dirt or gravel or you’d stress the chain. The chains get mega pull when you’re turning too. In this situation you just scuff the tire. The small diameter tire will scuff. The one scenario where you have different sized tires on different sides you slowly turn all the time. It’s a pain in the ass. Best case, change all 4 when they’re wore out. If you wreck one try and find one that about as wore out as the others.
