To this point the Tesla Model S Plaid sterling yoke has been highly critiqued. Most of the critiques come from people who've borrowed the Plaid for a short time, I on the other hand own it. In this video I break down my 1 month with the Tesla Model S Plaid steering yoke. Enjoy!

The horn should be a big button, in the CENTER of the steering wheel. It's a reliable place that doesn't require fumbling with tiny little buttons.

I really think that they would have done that if it wouldn't cause a problem with the airbag that is there. The electronics (wires and actuation button-switch) for the horn being put in the center of the airbag could cause problems with its safe deployment.

Re: BLOW THE HORN. Per Tesla operation manual, the alternate way to blow the horn is to cover your hand (palm) on the right yoke panel to blow the horn aside from pressing horn button. I.e. when your hand cover the right portion of yoke steering, the horn will blow the sound, so you can blow the horn easily without taking your eye off the road. BTW, you eloquently make a great case for yoke steering. Specifically for an expensive performance car, yoke generate more benefits the shortcomings. In summary, it seems that Tesla only put this yoke in the car for aesthetic reasons and to be different for novelty's sake. It seems less practical in every way than a regular steering wheel, and having to palm it around like a forklift in tight turns seems super awkward and unsafe. Function and usability definitely takes the furthest back seat on the bus relative to form. It also looks goofy. It looks like a 5 year old's cartoonish interpretation of an F1 steering wheel. It seems too wide, like the bike handles on a beach cruiser bike. Appreciate the review, just not seeing the point of this yoke other than the funky aesthetic.
@FireWalkMusic
@FireWalkMusic Год назад
Indeed. It's not very practical at all. The most frustrating thing though are the buttons that have replaced the stalks. In Europe we use roundabouts everywhere instead of intersections, and it's a real pain in the ass to use because the buttons keep shifting positions and will sometimes even be inverted, depending on the angle of the yoke. I can never use my blinkers in a roundabout without looking down, but there's no time for that, and I've almost crashed twice because I couldn't hit the right button in time and people didn't know where I was going... I also end up accidentally pressing the horn too while turning the yoke in roundabouts and parking situations. This was a step in the wrong direction. Esthetics over safety and user friendlyness. Same thing with the wipers introduced with the model 3. Having to operate them from the screen is just bad design. Try hitting a small button on a screen on a bumpy road... some guy in Germany crashed his car, trying to operate the wipers in a model 3. I think this is all just about cost cutting. Buttons are cheaper than stalks...

I have been waiting for the round steering wheel option for awhile, but will the horn be in the center? Now I'll order my MSP! If I was forced to buy it with only the yoke I would have but now I don't have to... I just noticed this in the configurator today 1/6/23 in addition to red calipers and removal of the rear T on the trunk, now is spells out T E S L A on the rear bar. Hope they add the Power Frunk soon as well, maybe better brakes, suspension & handling, longer range, HW4+Radar. Wish wish wish… -OR- I can order a MSP with the yoke then after delivery I can order the retrofit round steering wheel and have Tesla Service install it for a total of $700! Then I can swap between the two whenever I want and have the best of both worlds. Decisions, decisions...

Bottons on the yoke. In the military, this concept is called HOTAS (Hands On The Stick). I flew an OH-58 in the Army, with about 37 switches on the controls. Missing an opportunity to have buttons on the back side of the yoke, Chrysler and GM have buttons on the back at 3:00 and 9:00. I can't wait for the stalk delete and yoke for my Model 3.
@FireWalkMusic
@FireWalkMusic Год назад
It's a pain in the ass to use in roundabouts. You'll never be able to consistently press the correct button for the blinkers as they keep shifting positions based on the angle of the yoke and will often be inverted. I've almost crashed a few times because i just can't hit the correct button to signal where im goings.You'll also end up hitting the horn when you don't intend to. It's not a very user-friendly design. Would make sense in an airplane where you turn the yoke max 45 degrees, but not in a car.. I can see it working better in the US though, since you mostly use intersections there. But in Europe we mostly use roundabouts, and you need to first blink into it and then blink again to signal out while still in a steep turn. There's no time to look down to find the button.. it's very frustrating and not something you'll get used to since you can't train your muscle memory due to the fact that the buttons keep shifting positions.

You left off one of the best reasons for the yoke... The S/X and plaid versions all have a useful display behind the yoke, showing settings, road pathways and obstacles that would mostly be hidden by the top of a steering wheel. It took me about 10 minutes to decide that I liked it.
@ganymede3141
@ganymede3141 2 года назад
Never in my life had I had the top of a steering wheel obscure a dash in any car I ever drove. The tilting function of a steering wheel, introduced in the early 1960s, ensures that you can always adjust the wheel in a way that doesn't obscure the dash in any way. So this was never a problem, and Tesla 'solved' this non-issue by introducing an impractical, oddly shaped yoke that looks very awkward and unsafe to operate (having to palm it around like a forklift looks super sketchy). They also made the turn signal controls capacitive touch buttons to frustrate users with them always being in a different place depending on wheel position and having to look down to find them because the turn signal stalk that's always in the same place and easy to operate even blindfolded was just too convenient. Same for the horn. It was too easy and convenient to smash the large center of the steering wheel, so the genius solution to that ease and convenience was to relegate the horn to a tiny capacitive button far from your thumb that you'll have to visually hunt for in an emergency. Tesla essentially took a regular steering wheel and made it worse in every way. No thanks. Looking 'futuristic' is not worth the frustration of using it every day.

@ganymede3141
@ganymede3141 Год назад
@@InSaN3ViSioN I have never in my life driven a car where the top of the steering wheel blocks the dash or instrument cluster. That's what the tilt function of a steering wheel was invented for, which has been around for more than 70 years. So unless you're Shaq, it shouldn't be an issue in 99.9% of cars. And Tesla doesn't have a HUD (head up display), it has a gauge cluster screen. Many other cars, costing far less than a Model S have a real HUD (projected on the windshield) in addition to a cluster screen, but Tesla, on the cutting edge of technology, still has to catch up with mainstream auto makers. Same with bird's eye, all around view of your car for parking. Tesla is still chillin' in 2010 with individual camera views. Let's face it, the yoke is only in that car because Elon though it was cool, not because it's practical. I drove a Model S LR (2022) with a yoke for a week to try it for myself, and couldn't wait to return to my regular car with a round steering wheel. The turn signals and horn were the most infuriating part, as this video states, along with the completely horrific maneuveing in my 4 story underground garage at work. I almost hit a few cars on a few occasions with the constant tight turns in the garage. It was like steering with a brick, grabbing empty air half the time. It was frightening and unnecessary. No thanks.

Getting muscle memory for "where to press" doesn't work since the buttons will be in different positions depending on how much you've turned. Examples; using the correct blinkers when switching lanes in a 2/3/4-lane roundabout (or when exiting a roundabout)? Or using the horn when you're turning?

Well done! The performance capability of the Model S & X Plaid certainly justifies the use of yoke steering from a safety point of view. That said, it might have made sense for Tesla to retain a steering wheel in the Long Range version of the Model S & X which have a milder performance envelope.

3.1 secs 0-60 is only a tad milder lol

Just like anything, we can adapt to a new thing. I like the yoke because it gives you more visibility. At the same time, your hands are naturally at the 9 and 3 position anyways.

The horn should be in the middle its the natural place as not every tesla owner is a Gen Z playstation playing kid. the yolk however on my model s is fab just all about getting used to it .

I think it should be in every model. It will take some time to get comfortable, but in the end i think it could have alot of benefits

It is the dumbest thing.... the yoke wouldn’t be for me. I’d switch it out for a regular wheel from a different model Tesla.
@squaredawayeveryday
@squaredawayeveryday 2 года назад
Can't really just swap them out. However you could just buy an older S.
@jmendozas197
@jmendozas197 2 года назад
It wouldn’t work. They clearly specified the Yoke is the only compatible steering “wheel” for the Model S Plaid. If you’re that concerned about it, buy another model Tesla.
