I am surprised the yoke wheel got approved in Europe, without a stalk. It would be perfectly fine if there was a stalk for the turn signals but, this way, it seems dangerous, since you will mess up the signalling several times especially in roundabouts like you said. I guess in America it is fine, since 99% of the times you activate the turn signal with the yoke wheel straight.
@davidbelecci6970
@davidbelecci6970 Год назад
Ferraris and Lambos have had on wheel controls for years, Jeremy Clarkson already made fun off it in Top Gear 15 years ago, it was just plain stupid to use in daily driving. And here we are in 2023 Tesla trying the same … but instead of these supercars that spend most of their life in a garage, a bit of highway and race tracks, the Tesla is a conventional car ment to be used in daily traffic for 100.000s of miles. Tesla will lose almost all its European customer base for the S and X if they continue this route. In the €100K range there are loads of nice EVs to choose from here, with normal controls.

I don’t even care about the Yoke shape But what bugs me is that the stalks are gone. Can’t use indicators in a roundabout, can’t quickly flash your headlights at others to warn them, can’t manually control the already shitty tesla wipers without using HAPTIC buttons on the steering wheel. And you can’t shift between Park/Drive/Reverse without using the screen! 🤯 And in emergency situations, 9 times out of 10, you’ll instictively hit the airbag, forgetting that the horn is a haptic button too! And 9 times out of 10 times you actually use the horn, it’s by accident which would give me anxiety. I just can’t with this design!

THANK YOU BJORN! You forgot to mention the insanity of the horn button as well--it MOVES and is impossible to find in an emergency, which is when one might need to use the horn--go figure. I don't know if Elon was high from smoking weed with Joe Rogan when he decided to go with the absurd yoke and stalkless column on the Palladium Model S and X, but I suspect he was. Combined with the horn button, this is BY FAR the worst aspect of owning the new Model S (we have several and after over a year of trying to adapt to this garbage, we have grown weary of this Human Factors Engineering nightmare). If you have ANY contacts at Tesla, please beg them to fix these defects as it ruins an otherwise great car. I have a 2020 Model Y (with original stalks & center airbag horn of course) which I installed an aftermarket yoke. I feel this is the best combo if you want to use a yoke steering wheel as most of the issues Bjorn mentions are eliminated, except for tight (right) turns. I have a M3LR and since December a Plaid. In Germany. I drove to UK and back over Easter and drive the M3 regularly. I think the yoke is fine except coming off a tight roundabout when you need to know where to press ie the top of the button. I like it and I’m used to it but it’s not for everyone. I think best would be a model 3 style series version and option of yoke as it is now. Probably for extra money. I get that you don’t like it Björn but some of us do :)

The Yoke wheel is literally a joke. Only made for US roads that only go straight... And about the Instrument cluster. I have to agree no need to have a instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. That yoke looks confusing as hell. Thinking about it, you can't even let the wheel to straighten up itself in your hands after turning. Also, in my country, it's not recommended to blink towards middle of roundabout, and pretty much nobody does it, we have a lot of small roundabouts and that would be confusing. At the same time, from what I can remember, it is mandatory by law to blink on the way out of roundabout.
@moppedforscher2075

Yoke wheel can only be implemented with steer-by-wire, if you never have to turn the wheel more than +/-90°. If I see how you try to change hands and use the indicators, this looks awkward, and I even can imagine situations when this becomes dangerous. Not to speak about forward/backward driving ...

In Switzerland, you usually don't use the left turn signal if you want to go three quarters. It doesn't make sense, if you think about it. The roundabout is just a curved street, so you only have to use the turn signal, if you leave the "street" (roundabout) or want to change lane (in a multi lane roundabout). But removing the turn signal stick ist just plane stupid. I'm curious, how this passed regulations, since they normally see a security hazard in the simplest things.
@rogerborgeryd1897
@rogerborgeryd1897 Год назад
Exactly, rules in most of EU (if not all) states that you don't have to indicate left at all when entering the roundabout, the problem however is indicating right at the correct moment when exiting... The Driving schools in Sweden seems to advice indicating left if you are going to exit third exit or later anyway just to let fellow traffficants know what you're about to do.
@garyanderton
@garyanderton Год назад
It is just good practice to signal that you are going left, not a necessity. It lets traffic flow easier as the cars to your left will know they can safely enter once you are mid roundabout instead of waiting, whilst the car to your right can take the first exit safely. Not a necessity, just good practice.

@@Cold-1 you do if you're overtaking, as in some countries you should always revert to the right-most lane. So on the roundabouts, it's equivalent: you indicate you'll stay on the inner lane instead of merging back to the outer one as you'd be expected to

Now after more than four months with my Plaid I just do it subconsciously, every time, and rarely have a problem with it. I note though that you remove your hand and take new positions. I might move my right hand, but I keep my left hand in the same spot on the wheel all throughout the roundabout. Then it’s easy for me to just tap the right button at the right time. The problem is not the Yoke, it is the missing turn light handle on the left side of steering wheel/yoke. If the car with yoke had turning light handle it should be working "fine" imho.

How is this a yoke problem? turn signals on the normal round tesla wheel is equally big problem in roundabouts... buttons will be upside down here also. Turn signal buttons really needs to be another place than on the wheel, it just don't work in Europe where we have so many roundabouts.

Yoke is horrible in roundabouts. But i still not understand why you blink left :D As long as you dont blink right, everyone assumes you go left/not exit. In Central EU. When i want to take the 1st exit, i blink right as soon as i approach it.

Rules for roundabout (4 arm): a) You're taking first exit to the right: blink right and keep right b) You're taking second exit straight forward: enter the roundabout, keep right and blink left when you're at the first exit (on your right) c) You're taking the third exit to the left: blink left before you enter the roundabout and keep left. Once you're at the last exit before you exit, blink right and start moving to the outer lane to block other cars coming from that direction This is not something I made up. It's from driving school in Norway.

I think some of the yoke issues could be resolved by adding variable steering ratio, that way there'd be less times that the steering wheel would need to be upside down. I think the true reason behind the yoke was to begin to phase out the steering wheel altogether, certainly won't be needed once FSD/robotaxi's are perfected. At that point you won't need the stalks either since the car will handle that on its own.
@pbasista

In my opinion, a reliable "full self driving" is many years away. It is unreasonable to assume that any car you can buy today will be able to fully drive itself before it physically breaks down due to regular wear and tear.
@notverygoodguy

FSD with the current yoke seems stupidly dangerous to me. When you let the car do it's thing and no longer pay attention to the driving, you may get into its way with your arms or things you're holding in front of you. A steer by wire yoke could be disconnected in FSD.

I 100% agree with Bjørn 🙂. The yoke is a joke. A normal round steering wheel can be grasped and operated regardless of how it is turned and you can let the steering wheel slide back in your hands to the straight-ahead position. Formula 1 cars have a kind of yoke wheel, but here it makes more sense as this can be turned no more than 180° to each side. Mr. Musk can do what he wants with his rockets and with mars, but I will never buy a car with a yoke wheel.
@BigDudeSuperstar
@BigDudeSuperstar Год назад
I think Tesla implemented the yoke based on software-based steer-by-wire technology, which would remove the need for movements beyond maybe 90 degrees. and would also not need you to get confused on the right/left turn signals since it would never be upside down. However, as many things with Tesla, they lag a bit behind on their promises and thoughts. They seem to implement hardware faster than the software can keep up.
@seb.
@seb. Год назад
Steer by wire requires specific hardware (redundant servos etc)... Tesla went for physical steering column, it won't go away.
@BigDudeSuperstar
@BigDudeSuperstar Год назад
@@seb. Okay, I was not aware of whether the hardware supported it. You've seen multiple occasions of Tesla incorporating hardware before having software to make it work (Matrix headlights, removal of US sensors etc.) They must have given this some thought, otherwise it seems like a major oversight.

The angle of steering can easily regulated by software depending in the speed. So in circulars at low speed that could be changed.
@pbasista
@pbasista Год назад
That would require a steer-by-wire system, i.e. a steering wheel that is *not* connected physically to any wheel angle adjusting apparatus in the car. Such a system is extremely uncommon today. And it is also unclear to me whether such systems are safe enough.
