Thanks for that tip on keeping quiet while making moose call. That is great tip for hunting moose. I have been around people that can mess up one hunting day. This great information Steve.
My Dad grew up hunting to put food on his family’s table during the Depression. He served in WW2, can’t find where in his records so what’s that tell you, and in Korea. He trained my brother and I to never whisper in the woods because the “s” sounds carry farther when whispered. He taught us to use the “combat voice,” normal voice function at lowest volume. Normal voice function uses the throat and mouth, whispering primarily uses the mouth, projecting “s” sounds much further. Great hunters who whisper say “No way, I whisper and get great results.” I reply, “Think how much more you’d get not whispering.”
Moose and deer have parabolic ears, like rabbits. It's like a parabolic mic, amplifies the sound. You can hear a person talk from quite a distance with a parabolic mic. Probably good for recording Bigfoot howls actually. Deer have a lot of hair inside their ears, which probably acts to mute wind noise, like a mic cover used by reporters outdoors.
Steve I argued this with my chatty hunting buddy . Ex hunting buddy I should say. He would literally have something to say after every call . Then blame my calling. So frustrating. Calling alone or with a silent partner I have good success.
Good place for use of hand signs & maybe a pebble throw? Learning Indian Sign language can be fun [ ISL is similar to ASL but more oriented toi natural situations] You can talk all you want that way. Also, had heard the moose antlers act like huge sound catchers and focus it into the ears. Think of old time grandpa with large powder horn stuck in his ear.
I found out how to catch a squatch...the Browns in florida turned their camp music up and snook around to the back of him....very bold because if they had gotten any closer they would both probably be dead....but Brown Srs foot hit a tree in the dark and squatch heard it and scampered but he got caught on film....now I'm ready to go to Port Chatham and play some 60s rock n roll and get down with the squatch. :-)
