Been a long time subscriber of your channel and I've wanted a trail 429 for the past several years. Finally the time has come and picked one up from a local shop here in the PNW. I'm blown away at how FUN and capable this bike is. it opens up rides that I might not normally do on my enduro bike. I dont have to pull back much if at all on the downhills. If youre an enduro/DH rider at heart looking to open up other avenues of this sport, trail 429 is for you hands down!

Thanks for sharing. Yep! The shorter travel, more efficient bike does just as you said, opens up more/different opportunities of riding that would be less fun/desirable on a enduro bike.

I've just turned 40. 2 small kids, full time job (luckily can work from home). Very little windows for riding, at times it's weeks or MONTHS without riding only option being with kids on baby seat attached to my oldschool hardtail. This summer I've made a huge leap forward and bought Cannondale Scalpel 3 2024 + upgrades for it (light wheels etc.). Was very motivated by your review as well. Time is precious. And when I have time I want to ride the best I can. My next step is to move to a place with better climate where there is no cold winter :) Don't want to postpone riding on such a good bike untill spring.

Thanks! Thanks for your constant and very detailed reviews which are an amazing help choosing the right bike. I appreciated your personal recommendations as confirmation of my choice of bike. I got the switchblade with 160/142 mm travel All Mountain which easily keeps up with 170 mm travel more enduro focused bikes, it amazes me every ride again. Pivots W-Link seems to make the difference! BTW., I am 52, married and father of 2 and full time working self employed, just as your average viewer ;-) BTW 2: the trail 429 works perfectly on your trails, the switchblade would be too much., However, my dream ride will be some high mountain tours which I will do with my switchblade in a couple of years, still need to train and get better.

I think a lot of people are afraid of a bike being too squirrley underneath them. Although it was never a problem for me on the Ripley, I know the t429 can handle slightly higher speeds And feel more stable. I also think it climbs slightly better.

OK…I’m 190 lbs..on the Ripley v4 for 3 years, rode the T429 for a week in Sedona…I prefer the Ripley…but I am an East Coast blue flow trail with occasional chunk. The Ripley is just the most fun bike I’ve ever ridden. Sure if I was doing regular black, chunky trails (like 30-40%) of the time…the. T429..but I am on blacks 10-15% and my Ripley hangs tough…esp the better rider I’ve become. I also own a Ripmo V2 and the best way I describe the T429…is it feels exactly half way between my Ripley and Ripmo…despite what its specs say on paper.

Just my two cents, at 210 pounds, I never felt the Ripley v4s was flexy. That said, with the new V5 Ripley moving slacker and with a more progression in the suspension, it has, to me, become a more aggressive rider’s bike. I can’t agree more with your view that the more conservative geometry of the 429 is a better fit for most riders. A 66.5 head angle provides plenty of stability, while still being nimble enough to steer with the bars at low speeds. Likewise, the slightly slacker seat tube angle puts less pressure on your hands when riding flats and long grinding climbs. On sale, no brainer, I would get the Pivot 429 over the Ripley v5 (and I like Ibis, having had a Cousin It, Dv9, and still have a Ripley V4s and Ripmo v2 (son’s I ride).)

Why not offer bikes w Pike Select forks or Marzocchi Z2 forks and shocks like a Fox DPS? This is short travel trail bike. It doesn't need a freaking FOX 36 or burly, expensive fork. @@mtbyumyum Superboost is only a dealbreaker because my other bike is not Superboost but is mullet (currently) but also 29" friendly. My plan is to be able to swap any/all parts back and forth as needed and be able to experiment with my other bike as it is now and as a full 29er and also make for easy sharing of parts between bikes in the event of a part failure. I'm a picky guy I guess but I'm not a "buy things very often" kind of guy either. These bikes are going to be with me for a number of years and I want to make sure they're all no-down-time as possible with the option for some experiments! I've heard a lot about the Yeti SB120. I'll definitely look into it! ...AND I'll call Salty Chris if/when the time comes to make the purchase!

@@mtbyumyum They are great bikes that do not market themselves to most of the mtb consumer base. Basically they are part of the problem and why the industry is floundering. The wealthy will pay whatever, and it drives the motives of the industry. As much as I have moved away from Specialized bikes, they do offer price points and builds most people can afford... not just high end stuff. Look at the fire sale in 2023. $5K bikes were selling for less than $3K. That means the manufacturers were gouging with high prices all along. Now the prices for 2024 are right back up there. This is not mean. It is the reality of the bike industry.

It’s no different than buying a car. Yes you can find a cheaper car but it won’t drive as nice as a more expensive car. The options are not the same, materials are not the same etc etc. I don’t feel this review was bias at all for the wealthy. If anything it was opposite as he is letting everyone know they are 35% off. Yes there are cheaper bikes that are fun, but they do not feel the same as a Pivot or Yeti or even a Specialized S Works.

@@ryanhobbs9300 He has to pitch what his sponsor sells. I get it. I respect Yum and his reviews, but he has ridden so many bikes from just about every major brand. It seems curious, that the most expensive brand on the market is the suggestion. Alloy Pivot bikes are $6500 w/o any discounts. My carbon 2023 Rocky Mountain Instinct went for $4800 before I bought it at 40% off for less than $3K. Why? Rocky makes lower specs to make great bikes affordable, as do many others. I'm fine with Deore and select level forks and shocks, alloy wheelsets, and decent hubs...as are most rec mtb riders. I have ridden a 429 and it felt like good mtb. No more amazing the Stumpjumper I already had.

Do know how many times Yum has ridden a bike and said, "This is the one?" Many and from all kinds of brands. That just shows how good they all are. I prefer to ride a good bike and keep a couple grand$ in my pocket. Alloy Pivot bikes are over $6K before any discounts or sales. Even Santa Cruz makes more affordable builds available.

With any pivot, they are great until you get past the medium size. Once you go to the size, large and extra large is where everything goes to crap. The chainstay stays the same while the reach grows and grows, giving you unbalanced geometry with crazy bad front end vagueness that just wants to constantly wash-out. I recommend Pivot up to a medium but past that I'd go with banshee or Forbidden🫡
@mtbyumyum

Interesting. Obviously I ride a medium so I can't speak to your experience... my buddy Jason is 6'4" and has been riding Pivot exclusively for the past 10 years. One of the fasted dudes I know both up and down hill... won the Deer Valley Enduro (pro cat.) a few years ago...

@lilblaster22 3 дня назад
@mtbyumyum He's not winning anything in loose conditions, and hero dirt is called that for a reason. I have experience on the Pivot dating way back. You can make it work, but you'll never have the speed, stability, or front-end traction that you get with balanced geometry. Even Specialized is inching their way towards better balance. I'm on 495 reach, 15mm clamp, and 452mm stays. I think this ratio puts me close to where you are on the medium Pivot. With most manufacturers, the medium size is the sweet spot..
