When Kendall Marshall went down that really screwed up how Carolina played. I believe if he doesn’t go down they win the whole thing, really sucks that happened, especially considering how the three seasons after this were kind of forgettable for UNC for the most part. #GoHeels
i am a huge jayhawk fan, and have much respect for Roy Williams and UNC. I always pull for them to win . except.when they play my jayhawks. but i hate Dook!!
@@austinmiller4832 No, I'm a Badger fan. But, now that you mention it, UK is probably the biggest cheater program of them all. So congrats for that, McDingle.
RyanPeterson Okay PenisSon, keep flapping your gums but Kentucky is the greatest program of all time. There are no scandals going on with the program right now, and you’re just a salty Wisconsin fan who’s pissed he’s never going to make another national title game.
True. Big 12 is still tough with Iowa St in Hilton, and OK State with Smart and others Top 10 team this year. But with, Cuse, Pitt along with ND, Duke, UNC, Miami, and Louisville for next year. BEST Conference hands down in the future years
Marshall was the engine that made this team go. Without him, their chemistry was just not the same. No disrespect to White, who under incredible odds did a magnificent job. He however, just did not have the court presence and ability to get the ball to their best playmakers like Barnes in ways that made it easier for them to score. I will always believe that this team would have made it to the Championship game and a rematch with KY if he had not gotten hurt.
Most telling possession of this game starts at the 1:57 mark which comes at the 1:19:32 mark in the vid. KU just went up 74-67 UNC comes down the court and their team of "Super Stars" passes the ball around because Roy has no idea how to broken down the zone D. No one wanted to shoot. The ball ends up in poor Stillman's hands. He takes it upon himself to drive the lane where Jeff Withey rejects his ass and it leads to a run out dunk. Ball game folks.
This game right here shows there needs to be an extra added advantage to regular season• Meaning I've always said that the top 8 teams on Selection Sunday (the eight #1seeds) should receive a bonus for playing they're asses off the 3-4 months leading up to Selection Sunday• The eight #1seeded teams should either get one of the two options•/// 1: Eight top teams get play 1st weekend on said 8 teams Home Courts• OR 2: Eight top teams get a Double-Elimination for the NCAA Tournament• Look how great of a game this was• It kind of sucks that a team that works hard all Reg Season and goes say (27-3) gets thrown into a Tournament Pool with Double-digit seeds who didn't work as hard all season• It would make for consistently better Elite8s & Final Fours and MOST IMPORTANTLY? Make the 3-4 month Reg Season have night/day more importance than it currently has• It's insane only ONE TIME has all four #1seeds made a Final Four (2008)--and what a FF 2008 was if u remember• Like u know HOW important reg season in NFL is? It's beyond huge• NFL teams in each Conf trying get #1seed to have home field advantage all way thru to Super Bowl• I just think the NCAA allowing at least 1 of my 2 added advantages for the final top 8 teams wouldn't just make for a much more CONSISTENT higher level of play in Sweet16-National Title game but most importantly make College Basketball's Regular Season matter so much more than it currently does•
To all KU fans who commented back and liked my comment, I appreciate the kindness. Basketball is king in the Midwest. I respect KU's passionate fanbase which ranks right there with UK's. I respect the all time wins and the coaching tree. I just like KU more than Duke/UNC. I feel like UK and KU are slighted opposed to those two. I am a humble fan. Early memories of Rex Chapman but I suffered through the Eddie Sutton probation, the Pitino dynasty and the down years with Tubby/Gillispie.
That's Roy Williams fault for not having a legitimate backup point guard. This is North Carolina during the hay day and you don't have a legitimate backup point guard.
Oklahoma State who is returning next year 3 future 1st round NBA draft picks along with Smart. Iowa State who nearly upset Ohio State in the tournament who averaged last year 83 points per game on making 16 three pointers per game. Baylor who have 3 players in top 50 recruiting class nexy year...pretty stacked to me
This Unc team was stacked but couldn’t stay healthy if only they knew they would be playing in the elite 8 game that year without there starting backcourt in Marshall and Strickland
Owns? Buck the all time series is UNC 6 KU 5. That's pretty much 50/50 and The 2012 and 2013 Hawks teams have been the least talented teams at KU in the Self era. The '12 Heels were preseason #1 and the #1 seed when the Hawks beat them. The '08 Heels were loaded to the teeth and were everybody's pick to win it all that year when a loaded KU team rolled into the Final Four and pounded them. And all 5 starters on your 13 squad were McD's All Americans. KU has 1, Perry Ellis and he doesn't start.
And furthermore, the portion of the video that I reference was not to note the time when we started running the triangle and 2. It was to point out that the Heels had no guy who wanted to take the shot. Poor Stillman took it upon himself and then was immediately reminded that he wasn't supposed to even be on the court with the big boys. "Suffice 2 say", you inferred whatever your Heels allegiance wanted you to from my comment.
Injuries and now locations? Come on man. Sounds like whining to me. Kentucky was the clear #1 so they got Atlanta. Syracuse was the #2 of the 1 seeds so they got Boston. Carolina was the 3rd #1 and they got the next closest regional location that was St. Louis. KU was listed as the top #2 that's why they ended up in STL. Still if your team was better they would have won. I hope we run into Roy's soft Heels again this year. Bill owns Roy 3-1 all time and in 2 of those he handed Roy his ass.
Stillman white. All I have to say about that. It's not the Hawks fault you had that kid as a replacement. Also Roy had no answer for the Hawks switching up to a triangle and two zone defense on you guys. Roy has never been able to coach for crap against a solid zone. We had him for 15 years and saw that over and over. Bill owns Roy and holds a 3-1 record against him, with 2 of those wins being absolute ass kickings. ('01 Illinois over KU & '08 KU over UNC).
All these Heels' fans talking about injuries. The '88 Hawks were riddled by injuries. We had a football player running the point, because we had no one else and we still won the title. In the '86 F4 against Duke one of KU's best players, Archie Marshall blew up his knee. In '03 Wayne Simien was hurt and we still made the title game. Injuries are part of the game. Players gotta play. McLemore wasn't eligible for this game. Had he been the Heels would've been crushed by 20. Quit crying Heels' fans
NO, 5 national championships are what they really have..most people count them..and UNC counts 1 helms title as well. UCLA and UK count 1 each also. KU has most conf. titles at 56. Best wininng percentage and most winningest program this century..that stat is spot on..
but i will agree it will help us they were a tough team last year. And KU got so much experience and was able to rewlly just tough and grind there way through march to Nola. MU made us better. And I will say as much as u hate duke tbey helped u guys to play through March. WELL SAID.
The Hawks had a poor shooting night for sure, but the fact that they held WKU to 14% shooting in the second half can't be ignored. They won. The pounded UNC in the second half on Sunday. They outscored them 42-17 before calling the dogs off with 2 minutes left. Sounds to me like you're just a KU hater. It's alright. They're still playing.
all teams have injuries. the 2003 KU team went to title game without Wayne Simien, who was injured. we lost because we missed 18 friggin free throws, not because Wayne was out. team should've shot better. we only lost by 3 to Carmelo, so it's our own fault we lost.
This is the UNC team that came up short, then gave up and went to the NBA. With all the injuries this team suffered, especially the one to Marshall which was pivitol, we may never know what this group coulda done....and we will never find out thanks to the draft.
Oklahoma State and Iowa state are better than Pitt and ND. But clearly, the ACC with the addittion of Louisville, and Cuse are overwhelmingly superior than any other conf. next season..well said
yea but you dont realize how much marshall meant to unc..he was the single key to that team. unc almost won without him so they deff wouldve won with him. KU wasnt even that good last year..they were just pretty good. theyre a lot better this year
Hate UNC lost this game. Might have been a different outcome with Marshall playing and Henson at full potential, but we will never know. I respect Kansas though, such a historic and great basketball program. GJ Kansas.
Their better than ninety percent of the teams in college basketball. Playing them will help your resume. They wanted to play you. Their getting better, and want to prove it, but you know it and are scared.
Well duke helped UNC, I thought by getting tougher throughout the season just like it did MU to KU. UNC fought tough teams and I thought blowing the lead at chapel hill last year reminded them. And was able to play tough against some scary mid majors, (like in Creighton and especially Ohio J) that's what I thought. but if umdont think so.. that's fine for me...
i count national championships, everybody who goes by national championships who say KU has 5 to Duke 4. Kansas has the most ever winning seasons at 99.
That's a cute comment, 'if so and so wasn't injured' ...well then I guess our 2003 title loss against Syracuse can be excused because Wayne Simien was out and we relied on JUCO Jeff Graves along side Nick Collision. Give me a break, "ifs" do not matter, you gotta play with what you have, how unfortunate 4 first rounders had to play all by their widdle selves!
And don't forget that the Hawks lost Julian Wright in 07, and Chalmers, Rush and Arthur in 08. All to the pros. Self just keeps finding ways to plug the holes.
Yea Bass Assassin come out if the woodwork when KU loses!! Love it..KU has had 4 straight years of 30 or more wins!! Most ever!! most conf. titles by anybody most final fours this decade..KU yet gain knocked Roy off the pedestal
UK has only reached the Finals once and Duke has reached it just twice in 2000s. UK,Duke, and UCLA haven't been even close to be consistent every year . KU has the best winning percentage and most collegiate wins than any other program for the past 6 years
Chalk Rock is a type of limestone in Kansas. A science teacher at KU came up with the chant "Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, Go KU." It eventually became "Rock Chalk Jayhawk Go KU."
This year seemed like a mix of rematches on purpose. UNC vs. KU (similar result from 2008 Final Four), UK vs. KU (a rematch from Nov 2011 and John Calipari vs. Bill Self from the 2008 title game), UL vs. UK (rematch from Dec 2011), and UL vs. MSU (rematch from 2009 Elite Eight).
are you kidding me? big 12 has averaged nearly 6 teams into the Ncaa tournament last 6 years. They have had 4 different schools to reach the final four the last decade. KU wininng 18 conf titles in 21 seasons is outright astonishing, doesnt matter what conference your in. KU with one more consecutive conf. title which would make it 10. Would be the only school second to John Wooden's UCLA to have 10 straight conf. titles..they then reached 13
St. Louis (Scottrade Center) will be a first weekend site for the first time since 2002. Right now, Joe Lunardi has both Louisville and Kentucky as the top seeds on both sides of the pod, but in my opinion, Kentucky could be sent to Orlando (down I-75) and Kansas could be sent to St. Louis instead of San Antonio.
Cheers! I am sad and happy that Coach Williams has retired. He deserves it, 3 National titles. 8 Final Fours. Amazing legacy at both Kansas and UNC! I wish UNC continued success, hopefully we can meet again soon!
Jimmy, all my trash talk is meant to just spur discussion. It's meant in good humor. I have much respect for Roy and the UNC program. I wish you guys luck in the tourney. Looks like ever since ya'll switched up to that 4 guard set you're back to playing good ball. Good luck man.
Not blaming on losing our PG as the reason...I completely agree with you, injuries are part of the game...it just so happens that Stillman White was our 3rd String because Dexter Strickland was also injured.
Good Game Kansas. I still wonder what might've happened if Kendall wasn't happen but I wont make excuses. I guess we'll meet again in the Tournament again, and again, and again.
Casey, I appreciate your passion for your team. All this back and forth is meant in the spirit of good nature. I've got nothing but respect for Roy. He gave us 15 great years. The switch up in 04 was good for both schools. I wish your Heels luck in the upcoming tournament. Maybe we'll run into each other again and if your boys win then I will gladly take your gloating. Best of luck brotha. Happy March Madness!
Allowing Kansas to have effective home court advantage in the Regional Final as 2 seed against a 1 seed made me forgive the committee for giving UCLA San Jose home court in ‘07 as a 2 seed.
totally agree. KU is the winningest team in college basketaball past 6 years. But I respect Roy, hell of coach does have 2 titles to Self 1.But Roy has more experience. Idk maybe this years KU team with stacked recruits can make it Final Four and win it.? but who knows
UNC would've won with a full roster, but take NOTHING away from Bill Self. He outcoached Roy, especially at the end when KU went to the triangle and 2.
What do you mean full roster, you had a lot of McDonalds All-Americans on that UNC squad. You guys STILL could've beaten KU, and everything. You guys just took us lightly, that's all.
Dude Kendall Marshall, the Cousy Award winner, didn't play in the game. Guy had ten assists per game. UNC's backup had been hurt earlier in the season so they had a walk on starting at PG. Thats what I mean by not having a full roster.
I don't care if he didn't play in the game or not. I know the guy had something like 10 assists a game, and everything. But when you are talking about a full roster, you better be a little more specific. You still had Harrison Barnes, had you Henson, McAdoo, Strickland, you still had some talent on that team, you had Bullock too. It's not like the cupboard was bare. Cmon.
+Derek Mathews As a KU fan you should know that the PG is the most important position in his system. In 05 they beat Duke at home w/o McCants who was undoubtedly their best offensive player, but they couldn't have won that game w/o Felton. As talented as they were that year they lost the 1st game of the year to Santa Clara b/c Felton was suspended. In the 3 years Ty Lawson was at UNC they played Duke 6 times and went 5-1. The one loss came when Lawson missed the game due to a severely sprained ankle. The 09-10 team was very talented. Talented enough that they could've made the E8 after losing their entire starting 5 to graduation & the NBA draft. They instead made the NIT b/c of poor PG play (LDII sucked). The next year w/ a top rated recruiting class that included Barnes they still struggled early in the year behind Drew II. Once Roy inserted Marshall as the starter the team took off. UNC probably could've won this game w/o another starter, but Marshall was simply indispensable
True. I was shocked we held him to 0 in the 1st half. This game came down to a sad end for senior Elijah Johnson. He's been our biggest problem all season. He did the Hawks a favor by getting 3 fouls in the first 5 minutes of the game, because then we had a real point guard on the court and were owning Michigan. EJ finishes the game with a chance to ice it at the line and misses and then absolutely lost his mind on that final possession. KU just got what we did to Memphis in '08. Sigh...
Also, just a general note, KU has been really good over the past few years. Bill Self has been incredible, but Roy has the highest win percentage among active coaches :) Even better than his loyal ratness coach K.
Here we go again. KU vs. UNC for the third time in the past six NCAA Tournaments. Good luck to both teams. I wanna see this game on Sunday the 24th. Rock out with your Chalks out!
i dont want to hate, but seriously KU not a top college bball program? thats a lousy statement. How can you have the second winningest program in the country, most all americans then any other program, in top 5 in both National Championships and final fours. 3rd in Ncaa tourney wins and appearances. thats top success to me?
well im a ku fan so of course ill say tbey are. Dont get me wrong Mu got so much better and heck beat us last year and of course we won later in OT. But for them to win Big 12 tournament. that was nit bad. but still they have never made a final four or won a conf. title in 20 years. But im not afraid to play them at all.
@theHeelz7 well ya if have a 172-95 record against them its kidve tough to want to play them all the time..since we always win. And are light years past them in titlee. SO WHY SHOULD WE WASTE OUR TIME ON A TRASH SCHOOL LIKE MIZZOU. WHEN WE CAN PLAY SCHOOLS THAT RESPECT US AND ARE TOP SCHOOLS LIKE US. as in Unc, uk, duke.
well MU when they left for SEC, they nearly dissembles the big 12 conference. And ifmit wasn't for Texas schools we would not be in a power conference. So we don't want to play them because they nearly fucked us up and our conference where we call home.
Funny thing is they count Michigans 9 helms football titles..why shouldnt KU? KU has most consecutive ncaa tourney appearances at 24. UNC, Duke, UNC have missed multiple ncaa tournaments in that span aswell
I mean KU out their 42 NCAA tourney appearances, they have reached the Final Four 33% of the time. Title game 25% of time and they've won it all 15% of the time...including KU has 95 NCAA tourney wins..(most by any school )
If we'd had our star PG kendall Marshall this wouldve been a chip year. Carolina was still in this game with mins left. Roy shouldve called a timeout and got them competing again. Bad shots.
game didn't even matter or count. BECAUSE this was NOT the actual UNC squad that would have 100% whooped kansas ass lol Wouldn't have even been close. They got lucky as fuck that UNC was injured
do a favor and stop trash talking Kansas. Just enjoy the game and the traditions of these schools..but remember Dean Smith a UNC legend and Adolph Rupp a UK great, both were KU alums
Kansas fans I recognize a bunch of those UNC staff guys as former KU players. C.B. McGrath and Jerod Haase. Also Steve Robinson was with Roy at KU. Watch for them at the end of the game.
Hilarious. A comment reply and a message? Looks like I really got under your skin. I'm not arguing who is the better coach. We had Roy for 15 great years. Yes, I was comparing them head to head because in those games Bill's teams seemed to be the better prepared, more versatile team. And my initial comment was in response to Heels fans making excuses about why they lost. Take a deep breath man. Calm down. We'll resume this discussion when and if the two ever play each other again.
You brought up Strickland and the location. If the Hawks had Archie Marshall in 86 or Simien in 03 we may have won those titles. What ifs are irrelevant. All we have is- What Is. Bill always talks down his teams. We aren't talking all time series (Which stands at UNC 6 - KU 4) we're talking Bill vs. Roy (B 3 - R 1). And you wanna talk about missing players? Ben McLemore wasn't allowed to play last year. Had that kid been eligible, we would have blown Roy's "High Heels" out by 20 instead of 10.
Injuries are part of the game man. Is KU responsible for the fact that all ya'll had to replace him with was Stillman White? We had 3 PGs on our team better than that kid. Players gotta play. The 1988 Hawks were riddled with injuries, only had 9 active players and borrowed a kid from the football team to run the point and still brought home the hardware. Oh and Ty Lawson got his ass handed to him by Russ Rob, Chalmers & Collins back in the '08 F4. He was healthy that night.
who plays in the d league now or not has no relevance to this game which was almost a year ago. anyone who knew anything about college basketball last year you would know k marshall was the floor general for unc. he wasnt a scorer but he would get 10+ dimes a game. you youtube trolls know nothing about sports. even bill self said KU got very lucky marshall didnt play, dont believe your own coach?
I get it, north carolina has better prestige than Kansas in terms of championships. And UNC is an amazing Basketball Program. But SO IS KU. 8 Straight Conference Titles? A National Championship? get outta here. that's insanely hard to do and impressive. I know Kansas has choked in some NCAA tournaments, but Carolina has too. people seem to forget the atrocious "matt daugherty" years as if they never happened. Bill Self has built a legacy at KU that Roy could have had if he had stayed.
