Found the sight early in my pickelball skills acquisition efforts and gained valuable information. Return on occasion as you pop up frequently in my feed but have opted to view other instructors more often. This was and is still my opinion that the video is way to long due to excessive repetition. for the content delivered. Do believe some repetition is good and needed especially if the content is given with a variance in examples. A good salesman closes once he’s made the sale.

Hello Jordan, this is another great video, thank you so much! I would like to ask what grip you use for different hits. As far as I know, for an overhead the best is continental grip and according to my experiences, for backhand groundstrokes as well. However, for forehand groundstrokes, dinks and drops I feel more comfortable when I use eastern grip. I have watched your other videos about groundstrokes, but I could not figure it out, which one you use. The reason I am asking it is that in our club most of us use eastern grip, but we hit not so well backhand and overhead. Should we switch from one to another for baseline groundstrokes and overhead smashes? I play tennis as well, and I switch my racket angle whenever I need, but it seems that in tennis there is more time to do that. Thank you in advance for your answer!
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
I change grips often depending on the scenario. At the net I am at mostly eastern, sometimes continental, as the same for my overheads. On my groundstrokes, I almost never hit continental. I am usually between eastern and semi western. Basically anytime I am hitting slice or “flat” shots I am in continental or slightly eastern. When I am hitting topspin, I am always in between eastern and semi western. This is really evident on my backhand roll topspin shots. There is no way I can generate the topspin that I do without a backhand eastern grip.

@@primetimepickleball Hi Jordan, I was watching a recent video from Nicole also talking about overhead smash and importance of using continental grip and pronation. I play with alot of rec player's and lack of power/control appears to be from footwork not so much the swing. When I learned tennis 50 years ago the overhead footwork was more shuffling steps like you are doing. When I do clinics now they are doing a crossover step. My tennis coaches tell me this newer style is faster. Have you tried it and do you have any thoughts? I also have found in Pickelball if my opponents are in good position in back court, I literally can hit the ball as hard as I can, crushing it, if I hit down middle many times it comes back. Same lob, all players in same position and I hit 50 or 60 percent power but hit angles towards sides of court point is over. I think power on smash is overrated ... it's fun but move your feet and hit the edges gets the job done.
@josepinchero
@josepinchero 2 года назад
question. if someone lobs over you, you turn, get back to hit the smash...should your partner go back to the baseline as well? (or stay up at the net?)
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 2 года назад
Typically, yes. If it has to bounce you will likely be playing the next shot defensively so there is no reason for them to be up there. They will likely get smashed on so they should drop back and defend with you until one of you can hit a good drop that allows you both to move back up to the NVZ line.

I'm relatively new to pickleball (with no prior racket sport experience). I get very confused by the different grips. I naturally tend to use the western grip on these types of shots (not only overheads but also green balls at the NVZ) since I can put more force into it than when I use continental and have to twist my wrist to make my paddle face the right way. In these types of shots, there is usually enough time to do the grip change (I do a one-handed grip change, using sort of a shake), and there is usually little risk of getting a putaway ball returned fast that would require a continental to respond. Would you recommend this type of grip change, or would you say it's still better to have a consistent continental for these putaways.

What if they lob to back corner? As a right handed player, do you still open the same way?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
That’s a tough one. If it’s a lob to the back corner-a couple of feet from the baseline, then that’s going to be hard to hit an overhead on. I do use the same footwork pattern, and if I can’t reach it, I’ll just have to run it down.

I tend to move to the ball well, but my shots tend to fly a little long. I am a tennis player as well, so I do not know if that has to do with it. I try to angle it down, but it tends to fly a little long anyways. Any advice on how to fix this?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 2 года назад
I assume your talking about your groundstrokes. Whenever you are facing a problem with accuracy, it’s generally best to slow things down. So, slow your stroke down and check your technique. If at slower speeds it’s still sailing out then consider having a slightly more closed paddle face at contact. Once you get you accuracy dialed back in, you can start to ramp up the speed. Hope that helps!

@@primetimepickleball I am talking about overheads, but thank you for the reply!
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 2 года назад
I see, apologies. I’d still recommend to slow things down and also to get over the top of the ball a bit more as the pickleball court is much shorter so you have less length to work worth. I too come from tennis and you can hit more “through” then in pickleball because you have more depth to work with. Contact point more in front should help too so that you can more easily get a bit more over the top. Hope that helps.

If you wait till the ball goes up its usually too late and now you scramble. Read the paddle language before the lob and step back before it goes up. Its easy peasy then.

Most of the balls that you are smashing are not from lob attempts from your opponents. It is usually a ball that was accidentally hit too high.

I see Jordan is right handed and finishes his smash by his left leg. Is it recommended to finish smashes on the opposite side?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 4 года назад
The majority of the time I finish around my left thigh, although there are some cases I would finish on the other side. As an example, if I were at the NVZ on the odd side, I could try to hit an angle overhead, hitting it close to the right sideline, finishing my stroke around my right hip.
