In our inaugural episode, David is joined by Rebecca Charbonneau. Dr Charbonneau holds a PhD in the History of Science from Cambridge University, and served as the Historian-in-Residence at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics from 2020-2022. She is currently a Janksy Fellow at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and working on an upcoming book exploring the history of SETI - the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence.

I couldn’t find this channel searching for “cool worlds podcast” and had to use a link in a comment on the short. The number of subscribers/views suggests others are having the same problem. You might want to look into it. This is really interesting and it would be a shame if it doesn’t get more views.

I can't believe I've only found this now. Great episode. I'd love to know if Dr. Charbonnbeau has reenacted any experiments or builds that scientists did, and that it corresponds with their papers (eg, Galileo's experimets with using lenses) and reported what she found in his footsteps and did it line up with his findings (or is that too science based?). It's a fascinating idea to look at science through a historian's perspective.

An anthropologist at my university went to live with the nanotech researchers at the clean room facility to study their ways and "culture" instead of for example going to the Amazon to study some tribe. Interesting idea.

Regarding the conversation at the 22 minute mark, there are actually time capsules from the 1960s they were opened a while back. It was this big project for students around the USSR, writing messages meant to be opened on the 100 year anniversary of the October Revolution in 2017. There is one of them from Novosibirsk that mentions this topic: "We know our time is interesting, but yours is even more interesting. We are building communism, you're living under communism. We believe that you have perfectly equipped our beautiful blue planet Earth, explored the Moon and landed on Mars, that you continue to explore space, and that your spaceships have traveled far through the galaxy. We believe you are holding talks about scientific and cultural collaboration with representatives of other galaxies, alien civilizations. We believe that the work that our fathers and grandfathers started 50 years ago and which we share, you will finish and bring to victory." Oh and about nomenclature, I think you guys made some great points. Personally I think there do need to be stricter rules. In the field of biology there are a lot of names that aren't just embarrassing and pretty lame, but sometimes actually quite gross. A biologist gave a species of bug a name that literally translates to "Kiss me Carmen Electra" as a pretty sad attempt to try to get a date with her. And now that bug is permanently forever stuck with what is, honestly, basically sexual harassment as its name. She never consented to that, she wasn't asked permission. Some scientist just thought it would be appropriate to use a scientific discovery as a method to try to hit on a girl he liked. Things like naming a species of dinosaur after Hogwarts isn't gross like that, but I still think it's a bad habit. If you can't take your own field seriously, the public won't either. It might result in more clicks to the paper describing it, but I think it just kinda trivializes what you're doing. It feels quite easy to just have a basic standard that your proposed name should actually have something to do with the thing you're describing.

Great program ,the subject is rarefied. I remember Mr. Sagan telling Congress why the "O" ring failed on the CHALLENGER • and how they seemed to not understand how narrow thier perspective( or vision ) had become. The temperature on the launch pad was a factor. We need objectivity to find facts and guidance in technology.

Nice interview. Where would the history of physics wonderland belong? CERN ALICE, the white rabbit timing, root, H3 boojum, snark graph theory, color theory and QCD, alice strings ,and alice rings. There is more even. Human memitic ringing over time. Part of the journey in understanding the universe and what everything is made of. What type of places would document something like that? Why go looking for alien civilizations? When humans are already so alien to each other. Who will model fluidic neutrinos around a black hole? If hawking radiation evaporates black holes, infinity is a cheat to get an incomplete answer. They missed a few things in doing so.
