I think imitation is a good technic to learn English fastly, it's natural learn just like a baby who learn his/her mother language for the first time.

English is full of colloquialisms. for example, drinking is a hard habit to kick/break. kick is the colloquialism in that sentence. it took him a while to kick the drinking habit.
