I grew up in Canada, English is my native language and even native speakers do need subtitles sometimes. Some actors just mumble the words, or there is a lot of background noise like explosions, shootings, etc. Besides that, some dialects are really hard to understand. Game of Thrones for instance...it's almost impossible for North Americans to watch it without subtitles because of the accent of the actors. I don't have trouble understanding British people when I talk to them...but, British movies are hard to understand without subtitles. Ask any American and they will say the can't understand all words in a movie.

I can understand roughly 85% of TV shows of my interest without subtitles. Maybe it could even peek at 95% depending on the subject, accents, my mental state, but I always keep them on, cos' why not? Sometimes I wonder whether it makes me rely on them too much, but whenever I go watching an English movie in a Finnish movie theater, I get a reality check. I understand perfectly enough without subtitles. Missing a few words here and there doesn't impact my understanding. On top of that I would zone out for a second or two even in my native language, so I consider that normal. Subtitles in my case - English. I never put them in my native language, it messes with my brain. 😂

In my case, Friends was the first TV show I watched in English. At that moment it was with subtitles in Spanish. So, I paid attention to the things they were saying and the subtitle. I didn't know how to write the sentences but I started to understand new things in English. Over time I guess I started to get used to their accents and I was able to watch the whole TV show without subtitles. That TV show helped me A LOT to learn English :)... we all have different processes to learn another language and thank you for sharing yours! We keep learning!

It's so important to realise that you're not some kind of "failure" because you need to use subtitles. Movies are hard for the reasons your mentioned (fast speech, slang, accents, cultural references)! There are times when I would have loved to have had subtitles when watching movies on video in French. But unfortunately cassettes didn't have that option! I totally agree with watching something simpler and building up to watching movies later. And thanks for saying that "Friends" is not suitable for beginners! It's not as hard as certain movies or TV shows that are dramas, but it's not the first thing you should watch.

I honestly can understand English perfectly without subtitles and it's my 3rd language.. Understanding takes time and it's just part of learning process .. If you can't understand without sub just put them and if you can't understand English subtitles put your native language sub on for a while till you are confident.. What's really hard about any language is to fix your pronunciation and practice the speaking part.. Understanding it's quite easy in my opinion because you can solo it but to speak you need to interact with people that speaks that language

I didn't grow up in an English-speaking environment either, but I can already speak English more confidently and smoothly than ever before. My first language is Spanish and I'm still learning English owing to my strong preference and love for the language. We language learners should always remember that language learning is an enjoyable, captivating, and endless journey, not a destination because there's always something new to learn, take in, and keep forever. Any language learner just needs to get loads of exposure to the language, so that we can potentially speak like native speakers depending on the accent we're focusing on. I believe that's completely achievable, rewarding, and fulfilling as if we were born in an English-speaking country so that we can understand at least most native speakers no matter what kind of content we're consuming or the real-life situation we're involved in. I've decided to only focus on English because it's the language I love and I'm interested in the most. My brain's capacity for learning additional languages is certainly limited, and I think I wouldn't be able to manage more than two languages effectively, but I hope I'm wrong. I would love to pick up Italian pretty soon, it's a relatively easy language for a Spanish speaker to learn, so it shouldn't be very hard for me. Keep up the great work on your language learning journey, Veronika. We always struggle to learn anything new like language, it's part of the learning process, and I guess there's nothing wrong with most of us at least. Thanks so much for sharing it all with us ❤😊.

in brief: 1. **Introduction and Problem Statement**: - Language learners often struggle to understand TV shows and movies in a foreign language without subtitles. - Veronika shares her personal experience of facing this challenge while learning English and how she overcame it. 2. **Speed and Pronunciation**: - Native speakers in movies and TV shows speak at a natural conversational pace, which can be too fast for learners. - Veronika's solution: Initially, she stopped watching challenging shows and turned to educational RU-vid videos to improve her listening skills. 3. **Use of Idioms and Slang**: - TV shows and movies often use idioms and slang that aren't taught in traditional language classes. - Veronika's solution: She used subtitles in the same language as the show to understand and learn new idioms and slang. 4. **Lingopie Platform**: - Veronika introduces and recommends the Lingopie platform, designed for language learners to watch movies and TV shows with interactive subtitles. - The platform offers instant translations, built-in flashcards, and quizzes to reinforce vocabulary. 5. **Accents and Dialects**: - Different regional accents and dialects can make comprehension challenging. - Veronika's solution: Initially, she focused on mastering one accent (e.g., American English) before exposing herself to others. 6. **Cultural Context and References**: - Movies and TV shows often include cultural references specific to the country of production. - Veronika's approach: She watched popular shows, movies, and listened to music from the target culture to familiarize herself with cultural references. 7. **Conclusion**: - Veronika emphasizes the importance of patience and continuous learning. - She encourages viewers to try Lingopie for language learning through movies and shows. The video provides insights and practical solutions for language learners facing challenges in understanding foreign content.

I've been living in America for almost 4 years and up to this day I still watch some TV shows with subtitles on. It depends on the movie and the show, PG movies are easier to understand, R and NC-17 movies are harder sometimes. The Boys for example, which is my favorite TV show, I've only watched it in English and was able to understand most of what was being said, but when it came to Butcher, I couldn't understand a word that guy said.

Nice video, the dialect thing can be a real issue sometimes since there can be so many, I agree that its better to concentrate on one although it can be rather difficult at times depending on the language to find a show in a specific dialect, even more in the type of show you want to watch.

It's fantastic that there's a resource addressing the common challenge of understanding TV shows and movies without subtitles. It's a relatable issue for many, especially when watching content in a language that's not one's mother tongue. The journey to improve listening skills can be both exciting and incredibly rewarding, opening up a whole new world of entertainment without the barrier of language. It's great to see content that offers practical solutions and encourages language and listening skill development. Keep embracing new learning opportunities! 🌟🎧📺
