I was tested my home brew mini 9:1 UnUn with random wire antenna 17,68m long. I was located in north-east part of Slovakia about 350m a.s.l. Radio propagations was poor. I ran 5W with XIEGU X5105 transceiver. I had just one QRP QSO today with SP1MVG/FF.
I was not using the grounding on my UnUn.
I will very appreciate if you will support my work and you became to my patron on Patreon ;-) / om0et
Thank you very much for watching my videos! 73 Paul OM0ET

Interesting video, I would have liked to have seen results with ground and /or counterpoise for comparison. I'm sure some adjustments would have got it better. Not lucky with the operating conditions either. It is good to see videos where things don't work out well. We sometimes think we live in a perfect world! LOL

@@OM0ET I'm also a happy x5105 owner and also trying to find the most minimal solution for hiking etc. I've only had it for a week and did one test, Inverted V vs No-balun random wire. Inverted V won by a long way... So now I'm looking at the more traditional end fed approaches (half wave with balun etc). Would love to see you test a known antenna vs your experiments.
@barrykery1175
@barrykery1175 3 года назад
Your antenna is a non resonant antenna, hence the reason for the high SWR. You are also feeding the antenna out of phase. You will get much better results with a resonant half wave end fed antenna. BUT, it was an interesting video. I like the location. Maybe the bands will be better for you the next time you set up. Good luck and thanks for sharing. Barry, KU3X/QRP

It wasn't a total loss. You gave me the idea to use the case from my Tecsun PL 600 for the x5105 and it fits nicely. Thank you. Wait a minute. What will I use for the Tecsun now? I guess the Xiegu and Tecsun will just have to take turns wearing that case. On another note, would you happen to know the impedence range of the X5105 tuner. It seems to tune almost anything but I'm wondering the specification and I can't find it anywhere.

Hi Paul. Fantastic location for radio. With the arrangement you are using, without a ground or counterpoise, all your equipment including even the microphone are becoming part of your antenna system. All the surplus coax you are using should be hanging out of the window and below the antenna to act as part of the counterpoise. Earth leads are essential with this setup. Karl. M0KRL.

Hey Paul always enjoy your projects and testing. The case I was talking about is the pouch that you carry the X5105 in that has the Velcro flap. I’ve look around for one but no luck so far. I’m going to try and place a grounding nut on the radios BNC connector or somewhere else on the case to access a counterpoise wire. One more thing, have you found any headphones that work well with the X5105. The output is 8 Ohms from the radio and most of the headphones I’ve tried the volume to be set very high to hear well. Again, thanks for work and time to produce these videos. 73 wd4dda

Thank you very much for watching and nice comment Preston! The pouch I use is from my TECSUN PL600 shortwave SSB receiver. Is funny how perfectly fits for X5105 :-D You don't need drill in to your radio! There is more easier way how to do. You will need T BNC connector like this: www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=T+bnc+connector&_sacat=0 One end connect to antenna and second one to the ground wire - but without center pin in connector of course! Ground wire will be connected only to the shield or body of the BNC connector. I have done this already. It works great. You will not loose warranty. 73 Paul

Hi Paul, I’m really enjoying watching your videos, you inspired me to go out and get a x5105 Radio (I’m very pleased with it), I’ve built the same 9:1 unsung with the Efrw aerial, however if I get a higher swr than I want I simply hit the atu tuner and it brings it into a totally acceptable figure! I was curious as to why you weren’t using this very useful function of the x5105? God bless, Bill G6ATO

In my humble opinion, the better solution is to use a wire that you resonate on the lowest F band of interest and use it with a multi-tap UNUN for a multi-band, no tuner needed solution :)

Nice place to be - unless you're a deer during the wrong season, I guess. :) From the video it looks like you didn't bring your counterpoise wire. That along with with the elevated position might just be the reason why the antenna decided to not really cooperate. I think you should just try that again with the counterpoise dropping straight to ground from your UnUn.
@OM0ET
@OM0ET 5 лет назад
:-D ...btw. I met 3 young deers on my way up there but pity is that I hadn't much time to record them on camera. Next I will use better grounding on my antenna and hopefully the propagations will be better :-) 73 Paul

@@OM0ET Yeah, it's been getting warmer, but it appears that the ionosphere didn't quite receive the memo yet. A critical frequency of merely 2.5 Mhz or so well after sunrise, like it has been lately can really ruin a QRP wire enthusiast's day. You get this tiny window in the afternoon to play a bit on 40 meters, and that's about it. Unless you get off the ground to get a flatter takeoff angle, something you don't really have much control over when portable, you're simply screwed in conditions like that,and I am not sure the owner would have appreciated you attaching a mast to his treestand to raise your antenna's feedpoint. Could have been an entertaining video, though. You don't get to watch ham operators dodging shotgun pellets very often. ;)

I am not surprised that 80 and 160 meters is high. The antenna is approximately 1/4 wave at 80 meters, so it will be a weak antenna there anyway. So how does the scale work? I see 1 at the bottom, but 5 ticks to get to the #5. Is the $5 5:1 or 1.5:1? If it is 5:1 where is 2:1?

Your previous version of the antenna had a 41 meter wire, that's about 135 feet, 1/2 wave for 80 meters. But this antenna is only 22 meters or about 72 feet. 66 Feet or 20.1 meters is 1/2 wave for 40 meters. The length of this antenna was not in the harmonics of the ham bands, and certainly not cut for 80 meter band. I think for an accurate comparison, you need to compare the unun with a 41 meter wire like you used for your first two versions.
@OM0ET

Check Gilles YT channel (RadioPrepper) maybe he has some hints I know he has made a 9:1 unun and does a lot of end fed's but he seems to recommend 1/2 wave length wire. So maybe that and/or the ground will be the answer. Good luck!

Hi mate the wire is way too low to work well! If you want to try you can either fix the wire higher and make a 64:1 trasformer and build an EFHW antenna. About 10m wire it is fine for 14mhz. With a little coil and about two meters more wire, i work qrp DX in 20 40 and 10. Find projects for EFHW! 73 de IU2IJW
