Today I did a second test of my home made MINI 9:1 UnUn and 41m long Random Wire Antenna. I was finally successful and had in total 6 nice QSOs with 5W and small XIEGU X5105 transceiver.
The test took one hour, including installing and removing the antenna.
One QSO on 40M band was not recorded.
PART 2: • #1 TEST: mini 9:1 UnUn...
PART 1: • New Mini QRP 9:1 UnUn ...
I will very appreciate if you will support my work and you became to my patron on Patreon ;-) / om0et
Thank you very much for watching my videos! 73 Paul OM0ET

Thank you Paul I enjoy your video's and because of your excellent video's I have brought the Xiegu X5105 radio and I have made your 9:1 unun with the 20 meter wire...... it is a good antenna and an excellent QRP radio....... I am very happy with it . Many thanks to you ..... best regards from New Zealand (ZL1SEW) Steve

Hello Steve! Thanks for very nice comment! 😀 I am very happy that you like my videos. I am sure that you will be very happy with this rig. Don't forget to join in Xiegu X5105 facebook group. You can find there many useful informations and help from many users and xiegu tester as admin. Did you make QSOs with your antenna already? 73 and greetings from Slovakia 🙋‍♂️ Paul.

I like your radio. It performed well with your random wire antenna. I understood some of your conversation. A very well made and informative video, thank you, I have now subscribed. Did you use the ATU on your radio to match the antenna? Please can you say what the resonant frequency of the antenna is?
@OM0ET
@OM0ET 3 года назад
Thank you! :) Yes I use ATU. but not everywhere. On some bands is it not required due to low SWR. This type of antenna is called "non resonant" therefore it should be not any resonant lenght of this wire. The "random" lenght of the wire can't be a halfwave of any HAM bands.

The gentleman that lowered his power at the 9:00 mark actually sounded better with five watts than with 100 watts. At 100 Watts it sounded a little blurred and was clearer at 5 watts. Very interesting. I have been keep up with your build and am very pleased it has turned out so well. 73!! DE KE5ES
@OM0ET

Hello Bob, thanks for your comment 😉 This blurring may be caused by a small speaker used in X5105. Maybe I had volume turned too loud 😊. I tought that it will be barely hearable in camera, but later I realized that it was too loud 😲. Heh 😆 I have to fix it next time. This UnUn works great for me but it still needs proper lenght adjustments because is shorter than needed. Definitely this lenght 41m is better than 17.6m like it was in my previous video 😊 Have a nice day Bob and 73. Paul

Hello Paul. An interesting series of videos. The antenna would work much better if you used a long counterpoise on the ground side. This can just be layed out on the ground and it would give the antenna something to work against. Try it with a counterpois that is a quarter wave at least at the lowest frequency you wish to work at. Also, it would help to get the radiator wire s high as possible. For this you can use a telescopic fishing pole. You can buy cheap fibreglass fishing poles about seven meters long which are very light for carrying in the countryside. 73s de G0BZB.

Nice work Paul. Just a question, what firmware are you using on your x5105? I saw a little different menu on your rtx, on mine I've installed the 1.0.06 version downloaded from Sinotel.

Thank you :-) My FW is V1.0.04 Aug 6 2018 13:51:43 I like this version because has removed all main bugs I had before. I don't know which more features include yours .06 ver. I think there were repaired some CW issues only, right? I am working only phone and that was a reason why I didn't download latest FW yet :-) 73 Paul

Congrats on your antenna setup. I am just getting into QRP. I have a uBitx, a Bitx40 and finally a QCX40. I am looking at building a 9:1 unun and have watched all your videos on this adventure. I am curious as to why you only have 4 turns when the plan show 9 turns? I have a T106-2 torroid that I am going to use that came from a failed Chinese QRP antenna tuner kit. So I was curious as to why only the 4 turns. Really like that setup you have. DE WD8WV
@OM0ET

Thank you for watching my videos! Here I paste one explanation comment from one user: To clear up some confusion in the comments...It is clear to see that you have 5 turns on the core. Each time the wire passes through the center of the core it is counted as one turn. Even though the drawing we see in the video has 10 turns the 5 turn toroid as built will work but more turns are preferred. The fact that it is a tri-filar winding, no matter how many turns, will result in a 1:3 turns ratio which also results in a 9:1 impedance ratio. This could be made with just 3 turns but, again, more turns are preferred. 10 turns would be much better. No matter how many turns it will always be 9:1 impedance ratio because of the 3 conductors in the windings and the way they are terminated. A ground or at least a length of counterpoise wire is important to achieve a satisfactory SWR.

Hello Paul, I am glad that the antenna works so well. Do you have a stackpole? I have one with 10m length, this I often use for portable operation. Unfortunately the trees on my field do not have the right height ;-) Thanks for the video 73 Bernd

Hello, no I don't have a stackpole yet. If I go to area with low trees I take the UltraLight Magnetic Loop Antenna with me. It doesn't need too much hight. It need just a small tripod and that's it :-) 73 Paul

Nice NVIS setup Paul, think your results closely parallel the what should be expected with an NVIS antenna arrangement, it's not that far above ground. That contact from the Ukraine is about the practical limit, maybe 1000km from your QTH with that antenna under normal conditions. Not surprised you didn't work the W7 on 20, it's not a DX antenna, most of your energy goes straight up. Can't think of a better setup for local contacts, remote net operation, a grab n go kit or for an emergency setup...you just throw the antenna over a 15 or 20' tree and away you go... so easy to deploy. A 9:1 balun is pretty easy to make if you have a proper ferrite core or an old toroid. Richard VA7AA

The configuration your antenna has been deployed for past year of videos is basically an NVIS antenna. Have you considered carrying a telescopic pole that when collapsed can be used as a walking stick. When expanded it would raise one end of your antenna giving a better takeoff angle for working DX. Mast length could be 10 meters up to 15 meters extended and 2 meters collapsed. 73 KB8AMZ

Yes Chris I used this transceiver when I served in Slovak Army 😃 but our radios were deaf, I don't know why 😃 Maybe there was some problem with antenna or electronics inside. Things made during the Communism era were made very well and with good quality, especially things made for Army.
