This prelude sounds so beautiful on the Clavichord :)

There is a rule in baroque music: Repeated sentences should be played as an echo. I have always thought this Prelude should be played considering the three last notes of each phrase as an echo of the previous three notes, so that they should be played softer This cannot be done on a harpsichord, but is in the nature of the clavichord, which is very likely the instrument on which this Prelude was composed. I completely agree with the suggestion in the video.

Thanks for the thoughts Miguel, much appreciated ! It is hard to say what was a rule or not, but your point certainly makes sense. Especially this prelude needs a lot of imagination in performance, even if the player chooses to perform it rather sober, since the structure is so open, so, I almost would say, 'unlike-Bach' ! w.

Yes, Colin Tilney's clavichord version of this does exactly these echoes in the C major Prelude and some pianists have tried this too. It's certainly one valid interpretation.

My piano teacher taught me to always listen to the sound. He was very much against playing music in absolute strict timing with a monotonous sonority and dynamic level. It should be noted he was from Russia, and was trained in piano performance and pedagogy at the beginning of the 20th century. This is one of my favorite Bach pieces, precisely because it can be played in various ways, not just in straight 16th notes at one dynamic level. I play this piece on the harp, which is a very expressive instrument. Thank you for your insights, Wim. I totally agree with you that your suggestion makes this piece more musical.

I like the idea that this piece is, for the more advanced student (perhaps not WF Bach for whom it was originally written) an invitation to do more with timing, perhaps a little in the manner of French clavecin preludising: see here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q0ygnhv2FQ8.html and since hearing it like this I find it pretty boring played straight, either by me or anyone else (sorry, Wim)

Great video! This song is like a story being told, like some kind of journey. What does it mean to you??

AuthenticSound thank you very much , i have asked you this because i want to play this piece ( prelude II ) as one of me pieces for my entrance exam to the Lemens Institute in Leuven and i fawned that your video about the first prelude of Bach was extraordinarily good at explaining me the way in in which to play it better , so wants again thank you , I hope that it will be out soon . I will certainly attend the class tomorrow . Tot morgen
