These were some good design decisions but If the name of the game is to cram as much stuff onto a single universe as possible I'd take it a step further and make a lot of fixtures share the same addresses. For example, all my truss warmers would share the same start address, all my front light would share the same start address, any static back light wash fixtures would share one or two start addresses. This frees up channels to add some floor movers on the US deck for Arial fx or some floor movers on the sides or maybe even some batten lights US (all the same address) shooting at whatever is behind the stage giving more depth to the overall stage look. Beyond that you could edit the color band profiles so that each of them have common start addresses for the pixels but unique addresses for tilt (course/ fine). This is how you can really maximize your single universe but you need to give some thought as to what independent control your willing to sacrifice.

Gone through the basic hardware solution with an ADJ console for the last 4 years and have found its limitations. I am now trying to upgrade, and I am stuck trying to choose between a hardware or software solution. Software Have been reviewing the MagicQ PC and QuickQ PC and, MyDMX 3.0 but not convinced that they are the best solution. I'm from the Philippines and some of the brands that you've mentioned are not available here. My target is to have a good lighting setup without spending too expensive fixtures. If you have a video regarding this, I would love to watch it. I watched your videos since 2018 and it took me 3 years before I understand all of the terminologies, techniques, and strategies when setting up my stage light rig (sound guy here). Hi, i'm also from Philippines and i used bunch of china lights available from the market. The most expensive brand in our country is AEROLITES and LUMILITES, followed by BIG DIPPER in middle class, then those inexpensive brands like CROWN, DJ SCORPIO, naturally, those brands are generic brands and in price range of 14-17k pesos. Aerolites is almost 28k pesos per unit. The quality for the top and middle brand is great. Bit for those cheap brand the cpu or the computer is always the problem. Sometimes the sensors or the stepper motors. The actual lifespan of the units differ due to outdoor usage and dust accumulation.
Have you ever done a video on designing your dream rig? A rig with no money limitations? Or about designing a light show to programmed music for performance art like you see at the trade shows?
This is an interesting question, and I'm not sure I can answer it. My design process always starts with the type of show and the result I wish to achieve, so we've got to have some kind of limitation or context built in. The trade show idea is definitely a consideration, but even then, you've got the limitation that you are designing the rig around the strengths of the new light you're selling :)

@@user8002 It is incredibly possible! I did for for about 6 years full time, and I met MANY people who do the same. Look up the "Geezer's of Gear" podcast, and you will find many interviews with guys who have made their entire career out of doing lighting design.
Hi David! I watch several of your videos and it’s helped me a lot. My band have light rig in the size that you explain in video. We have 2 bar with 4 par 56 led each ( Starwille ) on front truss / stands as front light. At the back truss we have 10 par 56 led (2x5) and 4 mini mowingheads 15w spot. As backdrop we use P9 LED curtain 3x2 meter. In the front of drums ( little drum stage) we have 2 more mowingheads on each side. Recently we provided 6 pieces Led bars and they is mounted vertically on 6 mic stand ( 3 on each side of stage ) . They act from the side too get deep .We have 5 more 56 led on front truss on audience. Light rig is controlled with Dmxis and Ableton on Mac .Led curtain is controlled with led studio on PC . Trying to control with “jinx “ ( like glediator) without success. Do you have some cool idea about this rig. We are 3 piece band, drums (center back) keyboard ( stage left )and guitar / vocals ( stage right). Thank you! Best regards from Sweden
Thanks for your answer! I agree with you about mowingheads. They are invisible without atmosphere ( haze or smoke). We are thinking to upgrade and looking after mowingheads. We play very little. Baying mowingheads with more watts don’t fix the problem, I think, because without atmospheric don’t make difference. Maybe wash mowingheads do job or is the question of taste. I mean spot mowingheads usually have gobo and can effect stage even if you don’t use atmospheric. Hard decision! 😉 Thanks again for your videos and keep doing great job! I think this video is more interesting for majority of us , your subscribers, because majority of us handle with light rig in the size you describe in your video!
Thanks for the helpful info. I'm using a very basic setup way more simpler than anything you've shown. The gigs that my band does are usually in very small venues. Am.legions, bar and grills, small clubs. On a rare occasion we might get into an auditorium or gym. We use a typical 4 led par on a tripod stand usually placed stage right and left, operated with a wireless footswitch by me guitar player. What I have a problem with is extreme color wash on our faces and, sometimes blinding brightness. I am considering either reaiming the fixtures or moving them somewhat behind us and, adding a couple of led pars on the floor right and, left with a static soft white or pale pink color to illuminate our faces for front lighting. I know I could mount them on a couple stands so that they would shine down instead of up but, that's more gear on an already crowded bandstand. Any suggestions? Thanks for the great videos.
