As the son of wonderful Portuguese born mother and French born father. Portugal is my heart ❤️ I am a Portuguese citizen, fluent in Portuguese,Spanish, French and Italian. Spent my summers throughout these 4 countries but Portugal is everything to me. The culture, history, music, food , geographical beauty is beyond measure. I will be spending 10 days in August looking for the perfect town to buy second home. My choices on this yearly 10 day trip are Santarém, Alcobaça, Mafra and Évora. Maybe I’ll run into you Dave!!!

You are blessed to have direct European ancestry. My Mum is from England (but she loved France) and Dad’s Mum was first generation Canadian-German… one generation too far back for me to claim German ancestry and my paternal grandfather’s has Irish ancestry but a few generations back… again too far I’m afraid. Portugal my favourite place in the world too!

I live in the Santarém area. Way too hot, dusty and full of pollens, plus I would say it's a region that the government neglects. Hard to find quality professionals and services. Suggest Alcobaça and Mafra. Évora is amazing but also quite hot. Hope you find your dream home.

Just back from an 8 night trip to Portugal, 5 nights in Lisbon and 3 in Porto (not too different from this itinerary!). I absolutely loved exploring both cities as well as the daytrip I took from Lisbon to Sintra/Cabo de Roca. I travelled solo and stayed in hostels in both cities and would like to add that Portugal is very doable on a budget. It's also very welcoming for solo travellers with extremely friendly people.

In Portugal, being honest and polite is genuinely important to them. Portuguese people love being polite!! How I can say, you will discover the significance of multiculturalism and diversity in Portugal. You will discover: - Portugal is a democratic society in which everyone is expected to contribute to public life. - Portugal is a pluralistic society that respects the diversity of various cultures from within a democratic framework. - Religious freedom is a constitutionally guaranteed right and most Portuguese people practice Christianity. - Portugal claims to value gender equality. - Portuguese people love their niceties and you should respect that. - Portuguese people tend to be polite, reserved, direct, and a little guarded at first. - Portuguese people are more reserved, you might not get to know the intimate details of a person’s life very quickly. - Portuguese people love small formal talk and probably invite you for a coffee. - Portugal is very Progressive and Developed country - Portugal is a very safe place.

Nice detailed video, Dave!! We Loved our 11day trip to Portugal in April! We flew from US to Lisbon, a quick 3-stop Metro ride to Oriente Station & took a beautiful 3hr train trip S to Albufeira for 4full days. We did not rent a car & used the Bolt app for car service if we didn't walk. Checked into our Apt by 12noon near old town; settled in, got groceries & took a fun & informational local Tuk Tuk evening tour to see the area & a beautiful coastal sunset! Took 2 days for Dreamwave tours: caves & dolphins, and parasailing. Loved our time at the marina & had a few nice lunches there! Took a Bolt to Caviero & spent a lovely day wandering back towards Albufeira on the boardwalk & trails, exploring caves/coves with a lite coastal lunch at Boneca & fruity icecream. We took a bolt back to our apt. We really enjoyed old town Albufeira & all the shops near the beaches. We took a bus to Lisbon & another bus to Obidos. Stayed the night in Obidos Castle & loved wandering the village for a dinner stop after the tourists left. Took a bus to our Lisbon Apt. Took the ferry across to the Cristo Rei Statue: beautiful views of Lisbon! We had 2 amazing day trips: Sintra- Regaleira & Pena Palaces, including a costal lunch near Praia Grande & visit to Cabo da Roca. Also a day trip to historic, beautiful Tomar- Both Recommend! And our final, full day was with the amazing Super Mario (we found from Dave's channel) learning about the history of Lisboa with many beautiful stops & views! Amazing 11days! We are ready to go back & see the North & central, plus looking at options for retirement!

"Saudade, a word that cannot be precisely defined in English..." Suggestion: check out the definition for the (very archaic) English word "desiderium" - feel a keen desire for (something lacking) / an ardent desire or longing, especially : a feeling of loss or grief for something lost - There you have it, that's exactly the meaning of "saudade".

I would argue that saudade isn't just "an ardent desire or longing." It is used describe feelings of nostalgia for something with positive associations as well. Almost a pleasure you suffer, an ailment you enjoy.
@Diogohenriquescaralho
@Diogohenriquescaralho 25 дней назад
Dave is right. We use this term to describe more than just a longing. Sometimes it is a simple I miss you, tenho saudades de ti, or soldiers that have been to war feeling nostalgia for a terrible situation but remembering the joyful memories with their comrades. The same word can express a different range of emotions

Tips on social etiquette in Portugal: - Don’t litter. Really, it’s a big faux pas here. - Greet everyone, always. Even if there are 16 fellow hikers on the narrow path, give each one some eye contact and a brief hello. - If you are invited to a party, be sure to leave before midnight so the host has some time to clean up. - Portuguese people love their niceties and you should respect that. - Don't use public speakers or speak loudly on public transport. It is considered bad manners. Portuguese People value individual silence. - On the escalator, people try to line up for those who don't have an urgent need to get on and leave space for those who need to get on urgently. - Avoid asking about a person’s age, family, marital status, religion, ethnicity, or topics like Portugal’s role in the Portuguese Colonial Empire

Hi Dave When talking about Sintra i would like to had the Palácio of Monserrate and the Chalet of Condessa D'Ela on the Palacio da Pena gardens. Dunno if you already visited, but i recomend i would like to recomend a few places you can visit : - The city Elvas, theres a big military museum and a famous old fort, Forte da Graça. Its know has the fortaleza city. - Viana do Castelo, the huge church on the hill with a very scenic view, Igreja Santa Luzia, and hospital boat called Gil Eanes, and the windmills of Montedor Also keep an eye on the train company, CP - Comboios de Portugal, cause in the summer there is a steam historical train that shuffles between Régua and Tua, showing the beautifull Douro River while riding an historical train. And the three Saints Seasons is upon us... Santo António in Lisbon, São João in Porto and São Pedro in Povoa do Varzim.

I spent 2 weeks in Portugal, maybe 2 years ago. My only reservations at all were for the first couple of nights in Lisbon. Plan was to take a train to Porto, but that got messed up, couldn't get a decent ticket/time, so rented a car. Wow, saw so much more than originally planned, it was sooo cool. Still missed a lot (Like Duoro river, and Braga), but saw so many other small towns i would have missed if we'd taken the train as planned. And, yes, we made it to the Algarva too. Great vid, keep them coming. Some guy called Steve in Texas.

@@SERGIO-cr6uy I thought you were Portuguese Thank you for the nice comment... Being from Canada, my French is not too bad. We didn't learn enough though, when I was in school. They concentrated on conjugating verbs instead of conversational French. The D7 visa used to be available for people who have passive income (pensions for example) OR anyone bringing 'earned' income from another country (self-employed). The monthly income requirement for a D7 is the minimum of what the minimum Portuguese salary is... (right now that's around €825 a month). They split the visa and now anyone bringing an 'earned' income in to the country has to qualify for a D8. That income requirement is FOUR (4X) times the monthly Portuguese income - so about $4,887 CAD. That is a lot more money. C'est en gros comme ça que ça marche maintenant...
