Americans don't expect the U.S. to be so expensive either. Prices for everything are absolutely insane after covid. It's been so hard on everyone. Some grocery store prices are almost double what they used to be as well. For example, eggs were probably 1.98 for basic eggs in 2019.. now they are almost 4 dollars for the same product. Also, Austin is a super popular, trendy place to live. Real estate prices have like tripled or quadrupled since covid so I'm sure the prices are just awful.

Your explanation of restaurant ownership and wages is pretty spot on. I worked as a waitress and as a bartender for years. As a waitress I earned $2.83 an hour. As a bartender I usually earned around $4 an hour at one location I earned $9 an hour. And I worked at all pretty high-end establishments. If it wasn't for my tips I wouldn't have been able to support my family at all. Not to mention the hours are horrific and the treatment is almost as bad as the hours. I'm so grateful to no longer have to work in that field. It's ridiculous how much it costs to eat out and how little the staff is paid

I can’t wait until I’m out of the industry myself. I make less then 4 dollars an hour and tips are the only way I can make a living in this business. I even went to college and got my degree, but I ended up getting pregnant and the restaurant industry worked with my hours so much better. But like everyone else is saying, I’m still making the same amount of money as I used to, if not less…and the price of living has skyrocketed. I didn’t even know the way of live was so different on Europe. If I didn’t have so much family here, I would have loved to move somewhere new!

@carriekup
@carriekup Год назад
@@ritam768 oh I made well over minimum wage. I worked at expensive restaurants. My point was just that her description of the business model is accurate. And while a made good money I worked very hard for it, and awful hours. That said, they are supposed to make sure you earn at least min wage but there are ways around that. I've known people who didn't make enough in tips but the boss would say things like "you probably aren't reporting cash tips you got." Or "based on your sales, if you got 25% tips you made over min wage" knowing it's not customary to get 25% tips. I've known many servers. None of us got more than $2.83 an hour. I made more hourly bartending but still not a lot. Not to mention min wage in my state, PA is $7.25. So even if they payed that, nobody can support themselves on that. I'm not saying tipping should stop. Just saying the food is usually over priced and that does not go to the employees
@MsPurji313
@MsPurji313 Год назад
@@carriekup I did payroll for a hotel that had both banquet staff and restaurant staff. Speaking from that side of it, it is beyond easy to screw over your staff if you are a jerk. I ran calculations on each day's tips to see if the employee hit minimum wage and, if they did not by the end of the pay period, we would supplement the check. We would do the same with the banquet pool. Some pay systems do it for you, but if you don't have one, it is a bit of time (it is not hard but you need to do it and keep on top of it). I have had people (managers) ask me to add in a flat % of cash tips because "you know they don't report" and multiple other things. You don't even have to work to screw over servers/bartenders; you can just not care and not take the time to do things properly. The odds of a smaller business owner getting caught out and having to pay back pay and fines are low because you count on the staff to make too little and depend so much on the job that they are too worried to report it. What Rita up there forgets is the key thing: someone has to report it. Lots of things are illegal and come with penalties, but you need to get caught. I don't like the way tipping is set up here, but I live here and do it. I just really hate how it is "well this human must amaze me to even get a living wage". It's gross, it's wrong, and it is so easy to take advantage of. I have a lot of respect and value for servers and bartenders. You play the roulette of "will it be an awesome night with great tippers or will I be yelled at, manipulated to get things free, or tipped with a damn bible verse". All of the later I have seen done by previous boyfriend's parents and to the servers I worked with (SO much tea shared after and before shifts!).

It’s a very common sentiment in the Nordics. For whatever reason, our people are just a lot more closed off than other nations, meaning a lot of lonely people and a lot of clique-y behavior. We will not engage in conversations with strangers (unless alcohol is involved), we usually won’t talk with service staff outside regular pleasantries and we barely acknowledge people we pass on the street. I find that whenever I’m in a social situation, my brain autopilots to finding any reason to get out of it as fast I can, even if I’m enjoying the conversation.
@rootsofaurora

I have to say that part touched my heart as well. :( I’ve lived in Sweden my whole life, but in recent years I’ve started to kind of dislike the anti-social culture. I am an introvert for sure, and I enjoy my alone time, but sometimes it blows my mind how nonchalant Swedes can be when they see someone suffer from loneliness. In many other cultures people wouldn’t “allow” someone to sit at home alone throughout the Christmas days but in Sweden no one cares. It’s very harsh how only blood family is invited and welcomed. I have close friends I’ve known for more than a decade that probably wouldn’t invite me over for Christmas if I was spending it alone, and I hate to think of that because it’s just so sad…

As an American woman in academia, I realized this year how backwards it is in the US. I found out I was pregnant in October this year. By thanksgiving, I found out I had a missed miscarriage. Suddenly planning for the costs of delivering a baby (which is outrageous in the US) was eclipsed by needing to either have a d&c or a medically assisted miscarriage at home. Then I looked at the prices of how much it would cost to have a medically necessary procedure on top of grieving a lost child. I was so freaked out by the cost (even having savings available to me) that I chose the cheaper option WHICH SHOULD NOT OCCUR IN HEALTHCARE. And now it's a post Roe vs Wade America and that created its own anxiety- would doctors refuse to treat me? Would pharmacists refuse to fill the medication? Then I thought with relief that I don't live in a place like Texas with stringent abortion laws. Because I was reminded in so many doctors visits that I experienced a missed abortion- that miscarriages are coded as abortions in medical terminology. That is why I am concerned with living here- that Americans have poor to limited healthcare because they think that healthcare is a privilege, and we let politicians handle our healthcare.

Yes, doctors can refuse to treat you, and pharmacists can refuse to fill the medication. And if you live in a forced birth state, you can bleed to death, or die of sepsis, in the emergency room because the doctors are afraid they'll lose their license if they perform an abortion. Pregnancy in a forced birth state has become significantly more risky. The politicians just don't care about women's lives; they consider us to be incubators on legs.

Tipping is expensive here because most businesses don’t want to pay a living wage. In fact a lot of states only pay a half wage to workers and they expect a persons tips to make up the difference. Unfortunately, even if everyone stopped tipping, employers still wouldn’t pay their employees anymore money 🤷‍♀️ But I figure if I can save up a couple hundred bucks to get my hair done, another 20/40 bucks to tip is fine. The person doing the work shouldn’t suffer because their bosses don’t pay them enough 🤷‍♀️ a bigger way to show companies and corporations that they should pay their employees more is to not eat there at all or go to a new place to get your hair or nails done. Once a place starts losing business then maybe they will actually take notice 🤷‍♀️ though more then likely, they will just blame their workers for it instead

@PastelBrushes-n-Donuts

@@kr8882 There is but the discussion of tips is primarily aimed at restaurants and they don’t have to pay the minimum wage. Most pay a small wage and expect the employee to earn the rest doing a good job for the customer. And some make good money this way. Over the last few years, though, it’s become more promoted that if you don’t tip, the employee can’t make enough to survive. Which seems like more of an attempt to guilt people into tipping the full 20%. Personally, I only tip the expected 20% when the service is good; and it usually is. Then, it goes down in tiers. There have been a few times in my life that I didn’t tip at all - those instances, the service was abominable. Also, more and more some restaurants have begun adding tips to the bill and there’s no way to not pay that tip - whether the service was good or not. This is common with big parties, but sometimes the restaurant does it no matter what how many are in the party. Those restaurants, I don’t return to.

I think the differences in food and dining experiences is a shock to most people! You are not alone in those feelings. The political climate is also not for everyone (like me). It’s fun to experience new places and cultures, but not everything is a good fit. I would love to live in Europe for a bit just to experience the differences firsthand!

Public transport being so lackluster in most US cities just blows my mind. We have all these memes here in Europe about how bad our trains are, like almost every country has some kinda meme about their rails, but at least we have them and you can go everywhere.

I totally get everything your saying. I grew up in NJ ( USA) in a suburb where you could walk to everything we had. The shore was an hour drive one way and NYC an hour drive the other way. As a teen we couldn’t wait to have a car to get to those destinations. The great thing about USA and I would say one of the most unique things is that you can truly get a variety of most places in the world. You can have your cake and eat it too with the freedom to dream big. We all desire those beautiful landscapes with see in pictures, books and movies weather it be the country, shore lines , etc. As you well know the grass isn’t always greener. I think it’s truly who surrounds you and invite into your life to share it with. I can tell you that my husband and I lived in the country part of PA for 3 years on 5 acres. Although we made friends and had a dog we didn’t have kids .it was Extremely isolating! We had planned to build our dream home and stay forever in the beautiful surroundings. Well… it was so lonely and quiet that we ran out after 3 yrs. We now live upstate NY and have the best of both (17yrs.) The health insurance is the worst and I completely understand the politics stuff:/ . There are pros and cons to all. Travel and have fun exploring. I’m glad you feel welcomed by neighbors:)

The things you say about having comfort snacks available to you being taken for granted is so true! I experienced it the other way around tho, last summer I visited my boyfriend in Belgium and realized a smaller version of a Polish grocery chain store is literally 2 streets away from his house... And it made me feel so much more at home! We went there and got a whole bunch of snacks I lknew and oved and shared them with his family, it definitely made me feel less homesick, and I'm sure it will be helpful when I decide to move abroad!

Wow, your opinions are on point. I thought about moving but I never traveled outside of the U.S. it's been a struggle for me and my nation (Navajo Nation) we're considered as third world because we don't have access to many opportunities. We barely have electricity and running water. Many of the roads arent paved. Food is expensive too. We have to travel about an hour or two buy essentials.

I moved from Lithuania to Mexico and here you have to tip on every single corner (almost).😄 I don’t understand why people have to rely on the tips, because it’s not the way it works in my country. When it comes to commuting, it’s quite ok, but a lot of people do have cars, just because it’s easier. You can’t walk to a supermarket. I mean, you can, but you’ll have to walk for an hour. Unless you have one 5 minutes away from your place. I was used to walk in my city. Some people are really lazy here, because you can literally see people grabbing their car in order to drive 2 minutes instead of walking for 10 minutes. Not everbody is the same, of course. You get used to things, but you still miss some other things.🙂 There are great things here too. I love that you can find delicious food 24/7 (in Mexico City)! I love that it’s much warmer and sunnier here.🙂☀️

I agree about the tiping in the US.. but unfortunately, its all comes down to the minimum wage being way too low for some places that employees rely on tips. It shouldn't be like that at all, and its not like that anywhere else but the US imo!

As a Swede, I actually NEVER when going to Swedish restaurants tip out of pure principle - I don't want Sweden to turn into a country where you have to tip. I have noticed more and more restaurants making you add the amount you want to pay yourself (when you pay by card) which shows they are moving into the "tipping spirit " and I DO NOT WANT THAT!

I am also a Swede, 44 years old, and tipping in restaurants here is not a new phenomenon. At least not here in Stockholm. That is the proper and decent thing to do, imo. I always tip at restaurants, and in taxi cars, but that’s about it. Never at hairdressers or in nail salons or shops. Not tipping after a nice meal with good service in a nice restaurant will definitely make the staff feel you are an ungrateful stuck up person, and if that’s fine by you, so be it I guess. 😌

@@AngelicaNyqvist You were wondering in the video where all the money goes when you pay at a restaurant, and why the owners don’t pay the servers more. It’s because servers in the U.S. make a LOT of money under the current system. Many take home hundreds and hundreds of dollars per night. And now I see that Swedish servers don’t appear to make as much. That’s the difference. At a really high-end place in Austin, a server can make a fantastic living working 6 hours a night, 4 nights per week. Hourly, that’s way more than the restaurant could afford to pay.

Tipping etiquette: this is what I was taught when I was younger. It has stuck with me. I practice it and it is a benefit for me and those I tip. I am remembered and given the VIP treatment for future services. I don’t expect that but by tipping well and being kind, it just comes back to me. I was taught to tip everyone that provides a service to me. Nail tech, hair stylist, server, bagger that takes my groceries to my car, etc… Additionally, servers aren’t allowed to keep that tip for themselves, they must split with all those that assisted them. E.g. the bartender, the other servers, etc. I hope this helps. 😊❤

Reading this makes me happy that I never had a job that depended or rewarded me on tips. I have a work ethic anyway and I'm happy you do too. A living wage is what motivates me and the peace of mind of a day of work well done. I do tip well, even when I don't get the best of service because I pity those who depend on tips. There's a reason the tipping box is called the "pity box."

I'm from the UK and the driving culture in the US is just something I can't wrap my head around. Although most adults here drive, it is really common to walk to the corner shop, get the train into a bigger city/town and just generally not drive. Three of my close family members don't have a licence and get by fine on walking and public transport I would really struggle if I couldn't just walk to a pub/local restaurant/local shops/the doctors.

The thing that really drove home the high prices of everything in the US for me was someone saying that a certain amount of money as a yearly wage isn’t enough to live comfortably on - and the amount was double the (lower) average yearly wage in Germany 😅

To be fair with the extreme inflation in Germany, especially for food and energy, a lower average income somewhere around 2k net income per month, you’re not living a great life unless you live with a partner to share the costs of living.

I'm a baker at a huge supermarket here in South Florida and yes, prices have gone up like crazy. I've seen the price change paper like 6 times this year when the norm used to be maybe once or twice a year, but wages still very low. A small cake went up an extra $3 at once, but they would never give us an extra $3 an hour at once, $1.50 is the max now a year, so I'm still stuck at $17 something an hour after 7 1/2 years and was forced to move into a little room at the in laws cause we can't afford rent, which another thing that skyrocketed in price.

I lived in the US for one year. I love some aspects of the country and met amazing people, but the reason I would never stay is that here in Europe I can walk almost everywhere, and I really dislike to be depending on a car. It's like they build cities for cars, not for people, and certainly not for being eco friendly. Once I went for a walk and was actually stopped by police because they were wondering why I was walking along the street ( I was going for an icecream) :D
