At least they mentioned the key to lessening/eliminating the pain in the buttock was STRENGTHENING not stretching the muscle(s) in the buttocks.

Am I crazy, or is it possible that this can create a hollow part in your butt cheeks? I swear I have hollow parts and it's deeper on the side that hurts the most (right side) because I have symptoms in both, but way more painful on my right side. The hollow parts fall exactly where the nerve is. I can even see it a little when I look in the mirror and feel it when I touch. Maybe just a coincidence but I thought it was strange. I always dit with one foot under me and I alternate. I've started doing stretches, and it started to get more painful. I am so happy I found you channel and will definitely try your exercises. 😘

I wish I could find this relief. I’ve been through PT, steroids, cortisone shots, stretching, stopped stretching and the exercises. The exercises seem to be aggravating it further. Everything aggravates it.

@@terrim1968 Electrical stimulator works This video really helped , but I still was suffering and so I’m grateful for a “precision” type of help , was from using an electrical stimulator thing , that I got on Amazon for $20 and it relieves my pain and melted it away in about a week ,with soft electrical impulses… and sometimes I’d turn it up , I’m currency and it actually would “flex” the muscle and eventually removed the pain. Different leg angles made the electrical pulse more intense and sometime strange flexing or movement of the strips of muscle , that would run down my leg! but the next day 90% of the pain was gone!!!!

I last had this pain over 3 years ago. I found Dr. Johnson on youtube and tried his tightening approach and it worked. Fast forward to this year. The same buttock pain came on suddenly (I've been playing a LOT of tennis of late). I tossed and turned in bed and could not find a position to alleviate the pain. Once again I came back to Dr.Johnson's approach and once again success. Honestly and truly I'm so thankful he shared his expertise to the world here. I plan to view many of his other videos to see what else he can cure for me. :)

SPECTACULAR !! So much passion. I just love it. :) Thank you ! I am also terribly sceptical of doctors. Bless their hearts , but they hand out pain meds without even an examination. I will try this exercise right away. I was gifted Oxycodone upon my last trip to emerg and I do not want to be friends with it.

I went to a Chiropractor a week ago and he told me to do the stretches, but that started causing another muscle to act up in the front of my leg. I went on YT to find some more info and Dr. Charlie popped up in a video from 3 years ago, and I watched him do 2 easy stretches to help tighten and strengthen the muscle. I was amazed!! We just went camping for Labor Day and I rode around in a 4 wheeler for hours with no pain. I'm going back to the Chiropractor next week for a follow up. I can't wait to show him how he too can help his patients and that stretching is not always the answer. Thank you Dr. Charlie!!

Dr Charlie Johnson is definitely one in thousands if not millions who is not afraid to go against the grain or the so called traditional belief. I knew that too much of anything is not good even flexibility, but now you have concrete evidences from people who have tried or treated by this method.

what is the exercise? the bridge? straight leg raises? side leg raises? clamshell lifts? I was given those years ago when i first had the problem. I am going to try them again because i am having problems again. oh and also the tennis ball massage on the muscle helped as well.

I had pain in my buttok for a year. Standing for half an hour and walking get pain. I tried many stretching exercises but no results. I just followed your tightening method and it works. Just do first day, feel good. Do the same exercise second day, I feel very much better. It really works. Thank you so much for your kindness to share this tightening method.

I am so sick of the pain, its been almost 4 months, i went to a doctor he said nothing is wrong with you, just inflammation and will go away, it never went away, lately its gotten a bit better but its still there, i thought this was sciatica, i am able to walk, but i miss my running and feel out of shape ..I just don't feel right. Finally Went to physical therapist, they gave me some stretches last week, and still not helping- but they told me its not sciatica its pirformis they think- I will try what is in this video, hope it works and not just BS..i'm 44 and really this is effecting my life

Thank You Mary Beth and Dr. Charlie. I am going to have to view your videos and see if this can help me. I am a 67 year old male. I work in maintenance and am constantly on my feet or walking many, many steps per day without any pain. However when I do sit at my desk or worse yet drive to or leave work it is Very difficult driving any distance. I avoid sitting so much that my feet are rebelling. So onto your videos........!

The pain is beginning to present problems with walking and lifting now.I have tried stretches and stuff but the pain is still there. With the weather finally getting nicer i have much demanding outdoor labor and can't mess around any longer...

He explained that my pelvis was out of place so he put it back in line explaining that i needed more than stretches and thats why it was soo tough for me to do them. Now i can move and do the stretches to strengthen the pirifomis muscle. Thank You for your help and correspondence....

For those that are skeptical, the tightening exercises WORK! I just started experiencing the same thing a few days ago. Using these tools the pain definitely disappeared instantly! Just keep the glute stretches up!

I have this and A physiotherapists then tried to tell me i have to pay 500 quid on feckin insoles for my shoes to make the pain go away. Always get a second or even third opinion, doing your exercises have helped me so much thank you from Ireland!!!!!

Has your pain subsided entirely? I can't extend my knee and lift my leg from a seated position when I first wake up. Sitting for anytime is terribly painful, walking doesn't feel good for the first few hours of the day. Bending over, or putting shoes on hurts as well. Only when I'm about 2 hours into my work day (I work on my feet all day) does the pain get better.

@@drcharliejohnson just the guide but noticed it’s available when signing up many thanks I just struggle with a sharp (sometimes dull) pain in my buttock area and leg which goes into the groin (almost feels like (without being to graphing it’s in my testicle area) This has been on and off over the years however has unfortunately recently come back (previously done a lot of basketball and skateboarding etc) I’ve been doing a lot of stretches etc but this time can’t seem to shift it.. sleepless nights at times! feels like inflammation and over stretching / using rollers / muscle guns aggravates it

Could you please share what the exercises are to eliminate the pain? I have been in severe pain for almost a year and have tried the other Dr's Primary, Orthopedic and Neurosurgeon with no relief at all. Today I had my 3rd steroid shot, one in spine, one in hip and today's was Piriformis. I've tried their meds with no relief also.

Hey Don. Thanks for watching. I wish I could say it’s super straight forward. Occasionally it is, but usually it’s not. It takes testing and following a process so that you can identify what will work best for you- Which is why I offer coaching to folks where we can work together to resolve it as quickly as possible. I have bilateral piriformis syndrome... I've had it on one side or the other for 20 years now usually alternating sides but now I'm getting pain on both sides together! I always figured it was my back until recently... seen a few doctors over the years all with different diagnoses. Recently been seeing an awesome PT who decided it's not my back. Been getting dry needled, and getting chiropractic adjustments too. The muscles are a little less sore now but not much change in nerve pain 3 weeks into treatment. I took an office job a few months back that seems to have spiraled this out of control. It's a good job but I may have to quit! I'm only 34 years old though and I dont think being on disability will help this get better as I won't even be able to afford the treatment I need. Its costing me half my paycheck as it is. It's a great job and I've worked extremely hard to get to this point but I'm getting to wits end here. I'm running low on sleep lately and my mental health is waning. Seeing my PT doc again tonight... trying to stay positive. I refuse to take opioids but found medical marijuana helps relax things. But now they want to drug test us and I'm screwed. I cant get any relief at all anymore.

@@absm5186 actually the root of my issue is a twisted pelvis due to internally rotating right hip. My hip flexor and abductors seem overly tight and my right glute is very weak. It was barely firing so been working on glute strength and stability which is really helping me a lot. Switched to a motion control type shoe as well which was a game changer. Gave up my desk/driving job which makes my hip flexor tight sitting all day for something more active and less stressful which helps ease muscular tension as well.

Symantics... stretching (lengthening) vs strengthening (shortening)... unmarry any meaning applied to the words.. instead think of it like this... she was trying one approach that wasn't working and doing the opposite worked. Imagine that!

Sounds like you either A. Got the wrong diagnosis or B. This motion simply won’t work for you (not everyone responds to this- infact, I’d say the majority don’t… it’s what we found worked for HER) or C. Funny thing is I found this out on my own. I started doing exercises and found that the pain was gone so I've religiously done them every single day (even when I work out a lot) and no more pain... so very glad to see this is an actual protocol!

I've been dealing with this for 1-1/2 years. No amount of stretching on my own solved it. So I went to the chiropractor and that really never solved it either for any length of time. I just finished physical therapy and will maybe have a pain free day here and there. The PT guy told me to do the exercises, but not to overdo it.....some days it hurts enough I can't do any at all. I saw this while icing down my hip ....again. I tried the first exercise of 15 reps. Got up and got a glass of water....pain gone. Obviously with a 1-1/2 into this injury (and over stretched muscles are just that) it will take a little time. I certainly can't hurt to try, everything else didn't help and still hurt.

I can relate to you on so many levels! Played in orchestra with back-pain from 6th grade on....and have been struggling since. Thought seeing a doctor would help and it did not. Now I am up late at night searching the Internet for some relief from this latest flare up. Boom! Starting to feel so much better

@@falcon127 The exercises that work for me are clamshells, bridges, and press ups. I do them for about 10 minutes every morning and evening and have been pain free for over a year now. I highly recommend Dr. Charlie though. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for him!

This is exactly what happened with me.. since a year I have been battling lower back and butt pain. Did so many mobility exercises, best orthopedic docs and therapists.. but just one exercise .. the clam and I felt relief in 10 mins. it was like a miracle. I am soooooooo thankful for his video and I am feeling sooo much better now. I really wish I could visit him, but I am in India 🇮🇳

I can't remember where I heard it, but I remember hearing that sometimes the muscle needs to be flexed to release it to stretch. I've found this helps on a variety of ailments involving a "tight" muscle.

yo bro I been stuck for a year with this I have ah huge vein in my foot I couldn't walk it felt like 3 different points in my leg shit foot lower back but rested with tynelol and slowly now its just like my lower butt ... but I can't get it out I can't gain weight because I don't feel strong I don't feel myself . not sure what to do had X-ray no mir nothing broken. I keep stretching till the cows home and nothing like she said...left side 35 male

Sir can we cure piriformis syndrome parmanently only with excerise? I m suffering from it from passed 2 years... I get instant relief by excerise. But it comes back when I study or do anything impppp..🙁🙁🙁🙁

@@drcharliejohnson hello sir. I was trying other excerise from a long time which were not that fruitful.but trying yours excerise almost from 2 days and few other excerises really worked. Like now I don't feel much Trouble in sitting and lying. But yeah there is almost 20-25 percent blockage is still in my right hip bone. I mean I feel it's over-streched ..I pray for the best..⭐✨✨✨🌟🌟🌟.. But I ask you ,,,, earlier I took medicines almost for 7-8 months from 4-5 drs'. and it gave me zero result except 15-16 hours sleep. Do you think I should try any other medicine????

Dr. Charlie, what if you do the test where you put foot above knee (4 box) ? and know you’re very much tighter on the affected side? I always have been but broke femur 10 months ago and wonder if the strengthening exercises I’ve been doing have made it even tighter? I saw one video of yours where you said if that’s the case stretching might be beneficial?

Hey! Good question- in MY experience- even if hip is truly tight on painful side (stiff and painful hip in figure 4) stretching it is NOT very effective. Infact, it usually aggravates the issue. I'm not saying it doesnt make LOGICAL sense (if somethings truly tight then it stretch it), BUT I havent found much value out of it. Best way to treat is generally to increase strength of affected leg/hip, or increase motion elsewhere in the body, trunk/back. Make sense?

I had seen a video from another PT saying to stop strengthening and only stretch and my PT agreed so I’ve done no strengthening for 8 weeks and leg is getting weaker. Saw my surgeon’s PA yesterday and she said to get back to the strengthening exercises. I’ve lost some progress by not doing them but they did aggravate the pain and it was so bad at times…….. do think I might have overdone them and they caused the pain although the PA says they see this all the time due to altered body mechanics. Anyway thanks again for sharing your opinion on this!

The issue i am having is that stretches do not seem to help at all. I have the constant dull ache in my lower back and left leg. That leg gets numb and tingly, but gets less painful throughout the day, especially after I walk around a bit. But like I said, so many videos on here talking about doing stretches, I do the stretches and get zero relief. Im a truck driver, and pretty sure sitting all day is the cause of all this. I have to drive with a heating pad on my back all day, in order to get pain relief.

This method worked for me too... Charlie's method is virtually the complete opposite regarding a cure. I suffered for about four months with literally no joy whatsoever & literally within a few sessions all pain is GONE!!! HALLELUIA!! Thank you Charlie... You are a, star!!! Tim

Hi Debi I apologise for taking so long to reply to your question! Only discovered it now!!! The pains I have experienced vary and range mostly around the right hip area and at times go down through my right leg extending down to my foot. I find that sitting for a long time at the piano whilst teaching, performing or accompanying (especially with the right leg using the sustaining pedal) or being at a computer invariably brings it on. Essentially, I only use the first exercise lying on my left side and raising the right leg for a minute at a time. The second exercise Dr Charlie demonstrated in his video about 3 years ago does not help me and in fact seems to make it worse!!! I do not use these exercises daily as I find repetition unnecessary in my case. I'm obviously not a critical patient! What I have found is that I have to be relaxed without any tension and not rush into the exercise for about one minute. I also need to relax a little before getting off the bed. This seems to be important in my case. If I do this without much thought the exercise is not fruitful. Hope this helps someone who is possibly reading this today and trust that this "waffle" has been of some interest. Tim

Me too. I have been having lower back pain that runs through my butt n thighs and sometimes through my leg. I recently had an xray of my spine and it came back normal. I have tried chiropracting n Physiotherapy but they aren't of much help. My doctor suggested an injection but I'm not sure whether to go for it. This is my first time to have a back problem and the pain is physically and emotionally draining

Doctor please give me an advice . I have 8 long months with this pain, I’ve tried everything. Therapy. Pills . Steroid Injections . Stretches .. I feel better than before for sure .. before I was not even able to sit. Or turning my le outward. Now I feel I have symptoms but not as bad as the beginning. This is making me miserable :( they did an MRI of my spine . They found some hernia. At L5S1 But the pain management doctor says it’s not coming from there. And now I’m getting another mri of my hip :( I’m very frustrated 2 visits to ER they did CT scan they said was sciatica ,sometimes makes me think I have something bad. They can’t find what is causing me the pain . I felt pain on my abductors, hamstrings Also pinches and needles, pain discomfort in my groin . And I felt very strong spasm is my glute and sometimes lower back pain . I feel the pain is concentrated in between my leg and my but . Where the femoral bone meets with the big bone of the hip, also when I do stretches, squats, I feel triggers pain exactly over there . Where all the muscles tendons with the bone. I notice also some days when I feel very tight painful as soon as I start moving, I feel pops clicking . By the tendons and after I feel some relief . I have a lot of those popping clicking sounds lately . Please doctor give me some advice
