We head hot tent winter camping in the snow to test out my new Luxe Hexpeak hot tent and 3W Titanium wood stove for the first time. This was my first time truly camping in winter! I wound up breaking my Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe in the process, but was able to keep warm all night and still had a fun overnighter with my buddy Mike. I cooked up a really good ribeye steak and we enjoyed a few brews together. I hope to use this Luxe Hexpeak hot tent on cold days in the fall, winter and spring. It's pretty cool that I can now camp year round and even fit this hot tent setup in my backpack.
PS: I wasn't crying, something is currently wrong with my eye. 😭😂 Seems to be healing at least.. slowly..

Dude when you broke the axe I felt so bad! That was terrible! The video itself turned out awesome!! Steak looked fantastic I must say 👍 it really looked cold out there.. especially your buddy’s tent in the morning lol! Keep them coming!

That steak was "so good" that I forgot about the axe for a while haha. Mike's tent did look cold in the morning! probably why he was out making a fire before I got up. 😂

Nice job ! The “ warpage” is very typical of titanium stoves, like I said I have a remedy for putting it together. I got some “Bahco” dry wood blades for my Agawa Canyon saw, wow what a difference ! They come with green wood blades, I cut and burn dry wood. I agree, can’t wait for canoe camping ! To bad about the axe, things happen, putting a new handle on that is doable. Not a big deal. Really nice job! One upside of the smaller tent is you can reach the stove from bed. Not so much in the mega horn 4P...at least the way I set mine up. Take care🤙

Haha not sure what I'll do with the axe just yet but I'm waiting to hear back from Gransfors Bruks first. I had an awesome time winter camping but I'm more than ready for canoe season!

What a great first hot tent experience! Sucks about the axe...keep us posted on what the company says! That was awesome you got to hang with your buddy Mike...good job on managing both fires! I think you have the same grill as us too!....steak and beers...PERFECT! PS Nice thought on bringing the carbon monoxide detector.

thanks man great video. I've had a couple backyard hammock hangs lately at same temps. Shame about the axe!! Buried defect or pinhole knot maybe? (I've had that happen carving spoons). I've camped with guys with similar setups although personally not a fan of heat or being hot and for me hot-tenting seems like so much work but glad you seemed to enjoy the night. Brian

I haven't tried a hammock yet but that sounds fun. You must have a good cold weather sleep system. Truthfully the tent never got hot with the stove, just comfortable. I would guess never over 60°.. thanks as always for watching Brian! -Mark

I know the feeling, my buddies and I broke 3 axes in one camping trip. I switched to Fiskars and never looked back. Great trip that fire pit was very nice btw.

It's taken me many years to accumulate the gear I have and I'm still lacking a ton of things. Winter camping is definitely a fun experience though. We'll have to camp together one day.

I totally dig your cooking style! I bought an Estwing Ax/maul hatchet for $19 at Lowes.... Handle will never break and so easy to slit wood or drive stakes. The con is it's 4 lbs.

My friend Mike who was there that day just bought one of those Estwings and really likes it! I wound up rehanging the axe handle and getting a Fiskars X7, also a cool lightweight affordable option for $25.

Dude, that sucks re axe. Good thing you were out just testing. Good old Fiskar to the rescue! 😄 How ironic. I own a few Fiskars and love them. They just aren't cool in the bushcraft circle. Anyhow congrats with the new hot tent. One thing that will suck with a small tent/tipi is the condensation that builds and gets on you as you move around and brush up against the wall, including not having a lot of room to spread out. Other than that a hot tent is fun!

My sleeping bag has gotten slightly damp but I haven't noticed any condensation on the tent itself yet. Those Fiskars axes are really quite nice! I bought a new Hickory handle for the Gransfors but I think I may also get a Fiskars someday. Always love hearing from you David.

Both are nice but I would highly suggest a larger tent! The Hexpeak is very small compared to a couple new ones I bought for this winter season. The stove is great for the price. Thanks for watching!

I enjoyed the video. I have been a carpenter for over 40 yrs. I have found that wood handles always break. That is why my camping ax is a Metal Gerber like the one you used after yours broke. Also, Does the stove pipes break down flat to put in the bag ?

Duly noted about the axe handle. The stove pipe rolls up in the opposite direction and packs down into a small tube (a little smaller than the brown cardboard tube of a paper towel roll). Thanks for watching, John! -Mark

The tent is VERY tight with the stove inside. I would suggest to anyone that wants this tent and stove setup to get the XL size tent. Still had a great night out in the woods.I bought a new handle for the axe! Thanks for watching. -Mark

Everything takes time to accumulate. I'm the opposite and don't have backpacking gear. That's why I was carrying a huge dry bag that I use for canoe tripping. 😆 The pants are vidda pro G-1000's. I've had that Lawson's SOS! It's good!! Yet to try anything from Grimm.

Bummer about hitting the axe handle on that log. Did the company respond? Coincidentally, I just noticed that my Fiskars axe has a warning label about striking the handle. I'm sure that many of us viewers will now be very careful not to do this. We appreciate you taking one for the team. Did you find out what blade your friend used on the folding saw that was so aggressive?

Haha, I'm happy to take one from the team! Gransfors did not replace it, but I ended up getting a new Gransfors handle and re-hung it myself. The blade my buddy has was an "aggressive" replacement blade. I forget the brand, but you can find them on Google. I have a small Fiskars hatchet now too and love it.

Awesome video. If you watch what happened when you broke your axe handle it was a combination of cold temp and you were swinging way to hard hitting the bottom of the blade with all the force. It happens and if you were in the backcountry you'd simply learn how to improvise and make a new handle quickly

It's hard to tell if the blade or handle made contact with the log first, but either way it was a poor swing and poor way of splitting that wood down to begin with. Live and learn! I never considered the cold to be a factor in that way but you're right it was!

@@BackcountryPaddler it's all trial and error. I'm from northwestern Montana and I hot tent alot. I've done as cold as -42°F for 3 nights straight. I can tell you when it's that cold it hurts to even breath without a face mask and everything is at a slower pace becuz you have to be calculated with what you do. Your smart enough to get into winter camping and utilize your friends property and it's nice not having to worry about being at the top of the food chain while camping and getting into winter camping. It's better to have to Tapout in the ring then on the streets. Many people don't realize how quick things can go sideways when camping in winter. Happy to see you fight another day. Winter camping in extreme temps is alot like chess, you always have to be thinking 3 moves ahead. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Wow -42°F!! What an experience. You have to have a lot of experience and confidence built up to even attempt that. I'm definitely still learning so I'm some time away from being at that point. For now I'll just keep practicing and learning while having safety nearby. Chime in any time, I appreciate the advice from people such as you!

I bought the the stove I wanted first, no am looking for my hot tent. Transporting in the car means I can bring the dual wood stove fan, maybe it will keep things cosier. Do you think tis would be a good tent for 2 or 1 plus a dog?

I would say if you are camping near your vehicle to get something bigger. I'm hoping to get a Pomoly Hex Plus soon myself. Room for 4-6 people (less with a stove of course). Check them out, they are top notch quality when it comes to hot tents. If you're sold on Luxe, they have a few larger tents for more people like the Octopeak.

That was weird failure with the axe, we have 2 the same and I have put mine thru hell, getting tired and shanking the handle, mine just takes the abuse and looks like new almost. They will fix it for you they are a great company. Stay well, love the video. Chin up.

Great video. Glad you had a great time other than the axe mishap. That broke my heart seeing that. I have the same axe and they aren't cheap. Have you contacted Gransfors Bruk? if so what did they say? I'm guessing they wanted to sell you a new handle.

Unfortunately, they wouldn't do anything to replace it. I wound up replacing the handle myself with a replica. Good as new!

Great video, I bought one also and wish I never did a review for it since I bought it had nothing but issues it warps and never wants to fit together ever especially when your fingers are cold. Piss poor design, I may do another review about it just because the price is far above where the quality is and I don’t want my name to reflect that anymore. I reached out to the company many times and just got Made fun of because I was using a Chinese tent, when I found out there tents are made in China also, so really disgusted by that company and won’t use them again. I think a lot of the titanium stoves warp at least some. You can use straps to help hold it together while assembling it. Personally, I just leave mine assembled all the time. It's rare that I'd backpack in to hot tent camp. I appreciate you watching the video!

@@BackcountryPaddler I have seen that the straps help a lot, mine warped so bad it doesn’t wanna line up at all, but I’ll be running it tomorrow so I’ll give it another shot. I hike and solo hunt far In so the collapsed part wins it for me, I like some of these newer ones that fold up they seem really well done. Be safe out there

Haha very different axes hard to compare but I'll tell ya what when it comes to trying to keep it lightweight is great taking that Fiskars and it RIPS! I bought my own, the XY in black. I've used it a few times now and I'll have to show it more on my next video because I'm really impressed with it!

Your axe handle wood looked to have soft rot spot. It may have weakened it.

I had the Alps Mountaineering Tasmanian II and a Snugpak 0 degree sleeping bag. Super warm! Slept through the entire night. Poor Mark had to stoke the fire every once in awhile. Thanks for your concern though! 👍

Ok but in you would put a couple of pieces of split wood and then put the largest piece of a solid loge on top of the spliced wood before bed it would last longer

Misuse of the axe. You missed the piece of wood and struck the cross log with the handle. You don’t have to strike it that hard.

I don't disagree with you. It was my fault, but that's how you live and learn. I could have easily edited that part out of the video but I'd rather show the bad with the good. This was my first time winter camping and I have much to learn. I hung a new handle on the axe and can't wait to get out again this winter.

Pomoly generally has much better quality. If you can afford it. Go that route. I'd love a T-brick myself!

Definitely not a mistake. Just use it properly and be extra cautious if using it in freezing cold conditions. Be sure to oil it and it should last forever!

I thought I had mentioned it was a Gransfors Bruks. I reached out to them, they weren't able to ship me just the handle so I found a direct replacement online and rehung the new handle this summer. 👍

Very poor and dangerous chopping technique. Leaning the piece you want to cut against the bigger log invites the piece you want to cut to flip backwards and smash into your eyes or face. The piece you want to cut should be vertical, standing upright or horizontal. The former position is safer. God bless.

Looks like that when u went to hit the piece of log that you went to cut you hit the big log then cracked the handle then when you went to hit the last stroke and it broke the rest of the way

I had a ground tarp down underneath me where I sleep. It's a hot tent with a wood stove, so you wouldn't want a tarp underneath the stove.

@@susanjohnson2579 fire safety is priority 1 and I do not own any kind of fireproof ground mat. For me personally I don't see the need, as long as I have a ground sheet under where I'm sitting/sleeping I'm fine. I kept my gear in a dry bag so nothing was wet in the morning. For a first time in a hot tent it was quite comfortable and worked out well.

Hmmmm interesting wood chopping technique,,,,, You went over the log with the tip of your axe and the wooden handle hit the log first before the head of axe hit the wood. I am sorry, but completely your own fault bro.

@@kojak6671 the new handle is on. Replaced it with another Gransfors hickory handle. As for technique, I've brushed up some. Paul Kirtley has excellent videos to watch on splitting wood! Before I head out winter camping I'll watch them again because when your out there and it's cold it's easy to hurry and make a mistake.

You will break more axe's chopping that way. When you miss what you're trying to chop the axe head should be the only thing hitting the surface you are chopping on. Not sure why you believe you deserve a refund because the axe worked perfectly until you used it in a manner that wasn't proper.
