Hey Minty! This film holds a special place in my memory. In the 80's, my sister worked for the production studio that made this film... so she got to be an extra! And during your review you can see her. At time mark 11:05 there is a shot of 3 people at the party. The blonde on the left is my sister, the brunette in the center is my cousin and the man on the right was her husband. She was also used for a few more shots but you don't see her face. These videos are always entertaining!
How could you not? Seriously she's almost impossible to find anything wrong with. I believe she went on to make like a ton of Hallmark and similar network movies.
I couldn't possibly count how times I've seen this film. My brother, cousin and I used to watch it over and over and over again. One of my all time favourites
Lol I just rewatched this movie a couple of months ago and had to look up the character on IMDB because I knew I recognized him but couldn’t remember from what.
@@gphoenix51 That's what I thought, I wanted one pretty bad back then and I instead purchased a Colt Gold Cup 1911. I bought a Blu-ray copy of this movie and I really appreciate it, I also have a DVD version, and a mint VHS copy with a perfect box. Chopping Mall is a blast as well...
Thank you so much for this mini documentary. That movie is great. I really miss the old Sherman Oaks Galleria and the 1980's really bad. The last time I went in the old one as shown in your video was 1992. You could go in there to escape the heat, cold, or rain. The old one was completely torn down and the new one is what we have now. The new one is an outdoor mall with offices.
Hey, Minty! I cannot thank you enough for reviewing this b-movie classic. I had already seen Night of the Comet at some point (because I recognized many of the scenes when I recently rewatched it). But sadly, then, I hadn't picked up on just how good it is. So, it took you to help me unearth this forgotten gem.
One of my favorite movies. Such a fun watch. Just an FYI about the Sherman Oaks Galleria, the original Galleria was torn down and a new complex was built. The original mall was 5 floors and it was a closed building. The new structure is more of an open hallway with very few shops. All it really has now is a couple of good restaurants, a beauty school, a gym, and a movie theater. The new mall is actually the photo you showed. Great video!!👍😊
Good review! It was an excellent movie and everybody should see it. I really admire what they did with the low budget. All of the characters were likeable. The song was very nice too. The movie had a very comfortable vibe to it and was an admirable achievement.
So many people has said that this is their favorite line from the movie and it is among the top 2, but Reggie's reply is even better. "The car didn't know the difference".
Oh Man i loved this movie as a kid. I saw it after my Mom rented it for me way back. It felt so real, and yeah as a kid i totally identifed with them, wanting to go do stuff you have never been allowed to, take what you want, etc. As a kid who didn't dream of being to do what you want, when you wanted, etc. Exploring any place you wanted without some adult telling you what to do. Plus Oh My God i had a thing for Reggie. She was not only beautiful, but strong, and smart, and really cool. Catherine Mary Stewart's portrait of Reggie set the tone for the exact kind of woman i wanted in life. Samantha was really cool too, goofy, but strong when it mattered. Plus both girls maintained their moral compass from start to finish. Something we could all hope to do in their situation. This was a Girl Power movie that didn't have to tell people it was about Girl power. It didn't make the men weak in order to make the women seem strong like so many movies today do. The girls badassness overpowered the movie, something missing from today's filming. I think i've seen this movie over the years at least 20 times off and on. It's too bad Stewart wasn't in more movies back then. She was a real leading lady.
Meeting Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelly Maroney in person was great and watching them as they reenact some of their popular lines just shows how much fun it was to make this film
During the shopping montage there is a very iconic frame where where Sam sets her submachine gun down on a display table covered in high heels. I feel like a painted version of that frame would have made an EXCELLENT on-brand minimalist movie poster. Either that, or the shot of when Reggie is riding home on Larry’s motorcycle and she stops at a light next to an empty car with the red sky blazing behind her.
You are my kinda Movie guy. 80s made some of the best B flicks of all time...Heck I though I was the only person who ever saw this one..lol STILL LOVE IT.
Catherine Mary Stewart (Reggie) has an official facebook site www.fcebook.com/catherinemarysteart and an official website www.catherinemarystewart.com Check em out
Regarding the movie poster, the people on top are not zombies but Doris, Chuck and the neighbors watching the comet, hence the glare in their eyes. The doorway image pays homage to the scene when Reggie arrived home and leaves the door wide open like she lives in a barn. The darkness/space of the poster is to represent the darkened home.
Nice video!! I love seeing this underappreciated gem get attention. Have to strongly disagree on the name part, though. I lived through the 80's and must have seen Night of the Comet about 100 times on cable TV -- it got major play on there and that's one of the biggest reasons why it is such a cult classic now. But let me tell you, if it had been called Teenage Comet Zombies it wouldn't been shown anywhere on except on USA's Up All Night (which I'm sure played it once or twice anyway). Night Of The Comet may seem generic in comparison but it gave it an air of legitimacy that ensured a long shelf life on premium cable channels.
I agree. Teenage Comet Zombies would have been a spoofish Corman/Romero smash-up. Night of the Comet has some dignity in it without directly referencing any Living Dead.
Back in the 80’s we did a triple feature on VHS at my buddy’s house, with Night of the Comet, The AST Starfighter, and Dreamscape. At that age we thought it pretty wild that Catherine Mary Stewart was in two of them, and the main character’s name in TSL and D was Alex. Looking back now, the last part isn’t all that surprising, but a nice unexpected double feature with CMS.
This was one of my favorite movies. I loved the humor and I think as a teen the idea of being able to drive any car you find and not having to go to school or go to work was so freeing. I also was a huge Buffy series fan.
It's great you mentioned the fact "Night of the Comet" was a forerunner of strong female leads in science fiction movies to be followed by Sigourney Weaver in the Alien franchise on the big screen and Buffy The Vampire Slayer on the small screen. When I first saw the film in the 80's I couldn't help thinking how bad could an apocalypse be if the last two females in LA were Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney. The first order of business; repopulate the Earth.
Alien was released in 1979, and Ripley kicked alien ass from that point forward. Not to take anything away from Stewart and Maroney, their take was awesome, and NOTC is one of my favorite movies.
I was a young boy in the 80s. I don't remember this movie at the theatre. My most memorable movie from 84 is The Terminator. What I do remember about night of the comet is when Halley's Comet came by in 86. Everyone was talking about this movie. They played it a Lot on HBO. I watched this so many times in 85 and 86. So of course when they released it on blu-ray. I bought it.
It didn't make it to the theaters in my part of Indiana either. I didn't see it until 1986 when it was, ironically, the very first video my parents rented when they finally got a VCR. Been a fan ever since.
I watched this when I was a teenager. I loved the fact that the main character survives the comet because she's hooking up with a guy in the movie theater's projection booth.
A couple movies that would be awesome for you to review are The Last Starfighter, Krull, Sword and the Sorcerer, Willow, Space Hunter, Swamp Thing, Treasure of the Three Crowns, and Battle Beyond the Stars 👍🏼👍🏼💯😎
Minty….I always visit your channel ….a place of escape…..a place of comfort…..a place that puts a smile on my face…. Like when I was a kid in the 80’s! Thanks bro! Your the closet thing to a time machine!
I liked Kelly Maroney's character Samantha (I'm not sure I got the actress's name right) and I think she is underrated as an actress. She starts out carefree in the beginning, perhaps in denial of what is happening, but the scene where she's with Reggie on the police car talking about her friends and recalling how one of her friends was flunking algebra and trying to keep her parents from finding out she just subtly starts to break down realizing her friend is now dead was just perfect. I think movies these days need to go from focusing on star power and markets to just having good writing. If you have good writers and good actors the movie will take care of itself.
Absolutely one of my favorite 80s B-movies. Dig deep and find Head Office---amazing ensemble cast, surprisingly good script, and when Alan Smithey is involved you gotta see it!
Night of the Comet has one of the best creepy movie lines delivered by the character Willy - the one when he mentions something about "not in your worst nightmares...", and then pulls down his sunglasses. It almost sends chills down your spine. That actor played that character p-e-r-f-e-c-t-l-y.
Grew up with this movie. My Mother is a Horror Fanatic and adored this film. Both my parents would watch this every year almost religiously without fail. Thanks for this Minty, such an underrated film.
I always thought that it was pretty obvious to anyone that's seen the movie, that the doorway on the poster (with Reggie standing in it) is meant to represent her stepping out of the safe room that she awoke in, and out into the world of the Comet-Dead. It's kind of a callback to her leaving the theatre the next morning, and looking out onto the bright (red) light of the day after the comet.
Saw this in the theatre the night it opened. First movie I saw alone, no friends or parents. I loved it then because it was from my age perspective. The concept was interesting and the character Reggie was beautiful by 1980’s standards. Tempest was my favorite video game at the time so I appreciated the nod to contemporary culture. Love this movie.
Minty! You keep helping me to relive, and to re-examine these huge influences from my childhood. Like probably 3/4 of the videos you've done, I had this one on VHS tape And probably watched it 10 times before I was 10.
I love this movie. It was the first I'd seen with intelligent zombies, I love how they degenerate from intelligent to mindless beasts. awesome ad always Minty!
+1, I waited for this movie to come out in video (Beta, I may add) so my sorry 12 year old butt could watch it. Thank you for showing the little clip of Rebecca bouncing around the mall drinking soda in almost nothing... Lots of tween memories there, it took me back to 1984 for a second.
"It's Saturday morning. Where are the kids?" - The way they emptied out Los Angeles and the Sherman Oaks mall was that they filmed much of the outdoor stuff early in the morning on Christmas Day. Also, as you mentioned the tight release schedules that may have prevented Heather from playing Samantha, maybe, maybe not. Consider that Catherine Mary Stewart was in both The Last Starfighter (July 13, 1984) and Night of the Comet (November 16, 1984) and it makes you realize that maybe Heather could have. Still, I think Kelli did awesome and like her in that role.
I love this movie! SO few people know about it and it is great. I remember i first saw it on my old B&W tv aired on fox. All the color tvs in my home would not pick up the station (ah being a kid in the 80's) I was blown away by the mood and the premise of it. I think this movie and Nigh of the living dead were the major influences that molded me into loving dystopian movies as a kid.
holy SHIT!!!! you really have reviewed all of the movies from the 80's!!!! lol. dude, I'll support you on patreon for like a whole year if you do "remote control," the super DUPER cult horror flick with matt dillon and jennifer tilly.... or "just one of the guys" with joyce hyser, sherilyn finn and william zabka. screw it, I'll probably join your patreon anyways, lol. love your channel, man :)
@@GOOSEAF remember the series more than the movie although i did see it...also have some of the comics...not all of them but they are still interesting
sequel is so out of the question but I feel a mini series remake is a good idea. I expect remakes in other medias. I can see an awesome Netflix mini series.
PS Gotta Say Minty your awesome. I don't comment much as i'm watching youtube on xbox. But i had to come give you some props!!!! Love when you go back and remind me of all these great B-movie, or 80's movies that feel my heart with such warmth. Good on you dude, keep it up.
I happen to like pineapples on my pizza. But as for this video topic, I love this movie and I that you see Robert Beltran who later on in his career played Chakautay on star trek voyager. I probably spelled the character name wrong but people can figure out what I mean. I am really glad you shared this and I will tell you that it took me a long time to get the DVD. Definitely deserving of a sequel. Thanks again for Minty.
On the other side of the Ocean the movie had been banned from cinemas in Europe due to the amount of Gore in it due being sold as a movie for juviniles. But I have seen it decades later in the late evening progam on German TV
I came of age in the 80's and everything about it is pure nostalgia for me. I love that the budget was kept low as this makes people be more imaginative in how they do their production. I would have loved to seen a sequel. -- One thing not on your list is that idea of the world being positioned by the trail of a comet goes back at least to 1913 and Arthur Conan Doyle's (yeah, the guy who invented Sherlock Holmes) short story "The Poison Belt" in which a passing comet apparently kills the entire world except for a small band of adventurers that hold up in an airtight room with an oxygen tank. -- Oh, and BTW, pineapple does belong on pizza, but you need to pair it with bacon!
One of the three films Catherine Mary Stewart is remembered for... The other two being Weekend At Bernie's and, of course, The Last Starfighter. She was and still is VERY cute. I used to confuse her with Mary Stuart Masterson because of the similar names. MSM came a little bit later and had a slightly longer career in the late 1980s through about the mid/late-1990s. They both (semi?) retired from acting to get married and raise families. I'm amazed Tempest (1981) appears here but the movie was released in 1984! That was about a year after she finished shooting The Last Starfighter and under a year after the videogame market collapse (1983) of the 1980s. Videogames DID make a comeback in a huge way thanks to Nintendo and its NES console system a few years later. The NES, itself, actually came along in 1985 but hit its peak in the late 1980s.
Awesome movie. Never saw it before and got it after watching your video back in 2018, and it was great. And seeing Robert Beltran in something other than Star Trek Voyager is nice as well.
I love this movie, I saw it on cable back in the early 2000s and just fell in love and every time I see it's on cable or a streaming service I watch it again and again! Also there is a part in the movie where the camera is just showing the empty streets of the city and in one corner, I think the lower right, you just get a glimpse of a woman coming out of a building, and it wasn't any of the actresses in it, it was clearly just some woman who probably didn't know a movie was filming at that time, I guess even the director and editor didn't see it! It's been awhile since I saw it, so I can't remember when it happened, just looks around in the parts when they are just showing a view of the streets and buildings and you will likely spot her, lol!
If you were in Los Angeles in 1984 this movie's low-budget realism will resonate with you. Unlike many glossier sci-fi entries, this one feels as if you could wake up one morning and...
Caught the ending of this film about 20 years ago on TV and it stuck in my mind but I didn't know what it was called until now. Watched the whole thing last night and its a great 80's sci-fi 'B' grade movie which had appeal to teenagers who fantasise about being left to play about in world with just themselves and their teenage friends. Although in reality the fantasy would quickly turn to a nightmare as soon as the fresh food and water ran out. Wish I was still a teenager!
