If you slave over a movie for years, finally get it produced, and everyone loves it, it's a passion project. If it sucks, it's a vanity project.

A John Travolta passion project that took decades to make, got terrible reviews, and bombed at the box office... So basically, it's the Gotti of the 2000s.

I was laying on the couch while watching this and couldn't stop laughing. It's almost the perfect angle.

i love when people find positives in something negative. it's a much more rewarding experience. sometimes, something can do things so wrong that they become a wonder and something deserving of study.

Only the Cinema Snob could try finding something GOOD in a trainwreck like Battlefield Earth.

I was working at a Walden Books when the film came out. Since we were located close to the Scientology hub in Clearwater, the church would call us over and over. Each time they'd ask if we'd sold a copy of the book, or any other L.Ron lit. They were very adamant about being able to supply us with more copies of "Battlefield Earth" if we ran out. Needless to say, I don't recall seeing a single copy being sold.

"DO YOU WANT LUNCH?!" is the greatest line to ever emerge from Travolta's mouth.

It should be pointed out that the Psychlos don't actually speak English. When he's talking to Terl, Johnny is speaking their language and when he's talking to the humans he's speaking English.

I honestly consider this film a solid guilty pleasure. It's one of those "It's so bad it's good" films.

This movie is so over-the-top. It's also the first time I saw Forest Whitaker and Kim Coates aka Tig from Sons of Anarchy. This movie is a total guilty pleasure.

His original name was Dave Protagonist. Dammit, now I have to change my screenplay!

I saw Battlefield Earth in the theater when it came out. I saw a scathing review of it in The New York Times, and just had to check it out for myself. Then I read the book and bought some Battlefield Earth trading cards I found on discount at a gas station. One of the cards was autographed by Barry Pepper. I wish I still had it, but some roommate threw it away.

The first thing I noticed in Battlefield Earth was the hilarious bulges. 😮 😳 🤣

Hell yeah I love the balls it took to look at the positives in the movie and ur right John Travolta's performance is why I thoroughly enjoy this movie

Battlefield Earth is a guilty pleasure. It's so bad it's like watching a train with 1000 boxcars crashing and it just keeps going. You just can't turn your eyes away from the disaster.

Dude, cinema snob, do manos the hands of fate. You would knock it out of the ballpark with that review.

The sheer conviction with wich he says "Do YOU want LUCH!?" is outstanding.

Interesting idea for a video and I do think this delivers a lot of unexpected fun. If I can be honest for a moment "pieceofcake" being a generic encouragement that has lost it original meaning is a decent bit of world building. Some terms are just so common that they live on beyond their original context.

Well, you know what they say. Being bad in Show-Bize is still leagues better than being boring. And Battlefield Earth is definitely not boring.

I love this movie. I saw it in the theaters when he came out and everyone in the theater loved it. All six of us. Perhaps elderly couple didn't like it because they walked out in the middle of it. But four of us stay to finish it. I still like this movie. But I read the book and I love the book.

Note, I wrote this before finishing the episode: The Projection Booth had an episode on this movie. They interviewed the director (who got his start designing sets for Star Wars if I remember correctly), apparently he said the aliens where supposed to be about 8 feet tall in the book, but there was nothing in the budget for this. The compromise was to use Dutch angles and forced perspective to try to make them look bigger than people, but not 8 feet tall. Any movie not funded by Scientologists would have just rewritten the aliens as human size.

If Turl was the mastermind in Rise of Skywalker, and Rey's gramps... Missed opportunity for greatness.

I would be so much more excited tor Ep. IX if it had been Terl's laugh instead of the Emperor's. I have no desire to see the Emperor again, but Rey vs John Travolta at his most insane? Sign me up.

Brad... thanks for finally covering my favorite bad movie of all time! It’s such a perfect storm of incompetence that it never fails to cheer me up. And yes, I have damn near all the figures for it (just need to get Ker), along with one of the Psychlo Battlecrafts, a set of the Upper Deck trading cards along with a sealed box, a promotional baseball cap, the teaser and theatrical posters, and a t-shirt with the theatrical poster art on it. Also, for all its flaws, as a teacher of mine in high school pointed out, it’s a story that has teamwork saving the planet rather than the fate resting on Jonnie and Jonnie alone.

I was fortunate to have seen this gem in the theatre during its spectacular run @ the box office. It was on one of those Friday nights that made you want to drive straight off a cliff. But that's not even the best part. I ended up seeing the film @ the former "Metro 12" movie theatre in San Jacinto, California, the literal and actual home of the world-infamous, Scientology sanctuary, "Gold Base." It added a creepiness to the movie that no other location ever could.

I saw this in theaters with my parents. My father LOVED this movie (unironicly).

I worked in a movie theater when this movie came out. It's where the cool kids went to make out and we took naps during our shift.

Great work trying something different, Brad. I thought this video would be rather weak, but ended up really liking it and I hope you do something like this again. One suggestion though: Use a few other title cards in the count down. Doesn't have to be 10 or w/e, but a few different ones might help.

I caught this movie one night on Syfy channel when I was really young. I never remembered anything about it except for the scene where the guy goes "We thought you would settle for bars." For the longest time, I thought it was a figment of my imagination. Like I just made up the movie scene or something. But no. 15 years later, I'm reminded of this insanity

They should make a sequel now.Considering the sequels to movies like Independence Day suck, then obviously a sequel to Battlefield Earth wold be amazing. That's just logic folks. Also they had an F-18 toy? There were no F-18s! They had Harriers. I remember because that was the coolest part of the movie for 10 year old me.

Not to overthink this, but I think the idea behind the 'piece of cake' line is that they know it refers to something being easy or a sure thing, but they don't know what a cake actually is.

Today I learned the "I graduated top of my class..." copypasta comes from Battlefield Earth. Any movie that gave us that can't be bad.

Maybe the most awesome thing about Battlefield Earth is that it has seemed to reach iconic status while still being gloriously, unapologetically, absolutely and unequivocally bats*** crazy.

I seriously liked the movie. I don't understand all the hate. I like Rifts, I like Fallout New Vegas, I just love post apocalyptic aliens. The aliens were like vogons. And there is so much wild conspiracy stuff in it. People hated Dune just as much, meanwhile will Smith punches Chris Rock iin face like he was auditioning to be a human animal for the remake of this movie.

I hear the year this movie takes place in and can only think of one thing: "IN THE YEAR 3000!!!" "IN THE YEAR THREE THOU-SSSSSSAAAAAANNNNDDDDD!!!"

I liked this film when it came out, but as I got older I tried to revisit it and couldn't even finish it. Haven't read the book, but I'm told the second half got even more bonkers.

I was going to buy Battlefield Earth at this pawn shop. But when I open up the DVD box there was no DVD in it. Some brave person took a bullet for me.

10. The saying 'Piece of Cake' could still be around without the people knowing what a cake is. Maybe it survived as an alternate way of saying 'No Problem'. I dunno... 9. I read the first half of the Book and, the fact that its actually better and even a tad more logical aside, it doesn't have a lot to do with its adaptation, the rough progression of the story aside. The Final Battle, for example, is completely different. No Cavemen flying planes or anything. 8. This reminds me that the DVD was actually jam packed with making-of's and featurettes. Interesting stuff, actually, even if it is sad to see how much work the SFX-people and production designers put into it. And Patrick Tatopoulos actually seems like a cool dude. 7-6. Okay, I got nothing here... 5. I want one of these large glasses, actually. 4. I wonder if the Psychlos own advanced tech caused them to regress intellectually over the millenia. Also, I'm pretty sure Johnny was speaking Psychlo only when talking to Terl and Ker. It is hinted at that two languages were in play thorough the movie. 3. To be fair, I kinda like the heavy trenchcoats the regular troops wear. Can't defend the Codpieces, though. 2. Oh, absolutely. This is most of the reason why I actually *enjoy* watching this movie. Granted, I need to be in a certain, mocking mood for that, but still... 1. Travolta is an absolute riot in this movie. He chews the scenery with relish and is clearly having fun. I have a hard time knocking that. Also, to be completely honest, there are nice bits of production designs here (I like the Psychlo Ships and the Handguns for example), the soundtrack is good and I really like the thing they did with the color-filters: Blue to signify that the Psychlo breath a different atmosphere, for example. Did I gave this too much thought?

Hahahah. The most unintentionally hilarious movie I ever saw. Got to see it when it was released in theaters. The great thing was seeing it in the room filled with Scientologists. They felt my manic laughter was very disrespectful to such a serious work of art.

I never saw it, but I always felt that it looked better than it's score suggested. Bad? Sure. 3%? Come on! It's production value alone boosts it above 3%. 3% is for stuff Brad used to review when he started this channel, like Crazy Fat Ethyl 2.

Okay, it's official we need to get Eric Freeman and John Travolta to play over the top sci-fi villains in the next big summer blockbuster movie.
