I enjoy you so much, I been cleaning for three weeks, trying to get my apartment clean. I am 74 and NEVER new how to clean until I went on RU-vid. Love you so much, I tell everyone abaut your show. I like cleaning.
I disagree... In college we did a experiment(nursing) by cleaning a toilet with... Vinegar....then Scrubbing bubbles..then dawn...then bleach... We tested swabs for germs...build up...actual cleaning of dirt urine and fecal matter..etc. Bleach does the best on all the above... Vinegar as well.. Dawn and scrubbing bubbles did well preliminarily but bacteria and build up was a issue after a few hours. The clorox wipes did very well for surfaces... Just not for inside the toilet or inside the shower...because obviously theyre not big enough or hold enough product..but bleach is the best killer of mold mildew etc
She said, that it disinfects. But it does not really clean. It is not really made for that, so if you use it, you should also do more than just dumping it into the toilet.
I always using bleach with soapy water to wash floors & clean bathroom . I know that bleach is not a cleaner itself but it gives this shiny cleaning look. My bad habit is watching a cleaning videos for about an hour to get motivated to start cleaning my home! I think this is too waste of time !! But I really get motivated to clean after watching!
I have to say I love your delivery and relaxed nature in front of the camera. I learn so many great tips and I watch longer to see what ideas you have. Well done.
I completely agree! I’ve learned so much. There are many videos about organization that might include some cleaning tips but these videos provide in-depth info about cleaning which I love !!
when I use the liquid detergent cup, I empty the soap into the dispenser, then toss the soapy cup in with the laundry :) no more sticky cup or sticky ring left :}
Stace Carman ......I was using "Liquid" too, but...Target has these Clear contain-er's, that some may call a cookie jar. The particular one's have the Lid(silver) on the front, which is Great !! They are inexpensive. Then, buy a package of Pod's(Laundry- Detergent Pod's) then put them in the Container. I was tired of the MESS, and Hassel's of the Liquid !!! I'm getting one of those Container's to put under the Kitchen Sink, for the Dishwasher Pod's also !! They have the Large and the Smaller Container's. There is Only "2" of us, so the SMALL one's are Perfect....
My bad habit is shopping nearly daily! I collect anything that's on sale and sentimental things! I'm working on it but I can't do it alone. My partner is helping by removing everything from our closets so I can have a clear understanding how far I have gone. I love anything with a vintage feel. This is hard but you have motivated me. Thank you!
Between the 5 cats & 2 "grandogs," sometimes paper towels are a must. I'm not cleaning cat puke with special fancy cleaning cloths . There are other things I know my family & I can make the switch for. I don't use bleach often, because I don't like the smell, & I worry that it will splash onto me & ruin my clothing , or any other fabric or surface. I've found washcloths, hand towels, & bath towels ruined from the younger family members thinking it was ok to use them to clean/wipe when using bleach or a product that had bleach in it. :(
I haven't used bleach since I started watching your videos about making your own cleaning solutions . I absolutely love watching and learn from your videos, thank you so much for your guidance in cleaning!!
I did this at an apartment I lived in a few years ago. My roommates would never do the dishes, and most of the dishes didn’t belong to any of us, just left there from previous residents, so one day I threw about 3/4 of them away. Nobody even noticed and the dishes became much more manageable.
@@ethanray265 not technically. Tossing it all in their room takes way less time than organizing & cleaning does, & it also proves a point that they need to be responsible for themselves ;)
Really enjoy this channel. For myself, I try to focus on economy of movement. Meaning not walking from room to room putting items away. Try to do everything in the room you are in and when you leave that room then take those items to where they belong. It is easy to get distracted especially going from room to room.
The bad habit I need to break this year is not maintaining. I clean a surface and swear to myself I'm going to keep it clean then it's dirty again a few weeks later. I'm hoping to find a weekly cleaning schedule that works for me.
Clean as you go and you'll have the self-cleaning house. Once a day I set a timer for ten minutes, I can stand it for ten minutes, and clean. I never clean by a schedule. It's worked way better to ask myself what one thing bothers me the most and do that. Yes I leave jobs half done until tmoro.
Melissa I have a tip. I have been doing this for a decades and it really works. For musty sponges or dish cleaning cloth: After using the sponge or dishcloth, make sure it is clean of debris and then put some dish soap on/in the cloth or sponge and squeeze it out but leave that soap sitting in the sponge/cloth. It will discourage mildew growth. If you leave some soap in the sponge while it sits you will be surprised how much less bacteria grows. It has always worked for me.
Stacy Paige I'm the same! And also have a 3 year old. When she was a baby i would stay up late to clean and fold laundry etc but now it's just a bad habit i cant fight
Man I know this is an old comment and video, but I’m in the same boat! I had no idea there was others like me! I’ve always stayed up late and I don’t know how to break it. I also have a 3 year old and I’m currently pregnant with #2. 😩😩😩
Sara Ferguson i take benedryl every night for insomnia, it works great. I was using Zzquil until someone pointed out generic benedryl is the same exact ingredient for cheaper!
What has helped me to clean is to pick one day a week to do nothing but strip my beds and wash sheets dust vacuum and clean bathrooms and throw out clutter. I clean on Fridays and I think my family really appreciates it.
A tip for magazines or even Cook book declutering: it's OK to rip out the pages you wanna use and throw away the rest of the magazine. You can put the pages in a folder. Saves space AND you get to keep that indpiring article or recepie you love.
Not filing papers right away is my worst bad habit I think anyway. I really dislike filing. I just let it pile up and problem with that is that I've moved my office into my dining room. We rarely eat at the table, we mostly use the breakfast nook to eat. I'm good at recycling junk mail and I've gone paperless for all of our bills that have that option and we also have autopay where available. I still seem to get a lot of correspondence that needs filing and I set it aside thinking I'll do it...anyway that's my deal.
I have a horrible habit of not folding and putting away laundry when I do it. It's the one thing I hate doing the most. Not that it's easier by any means but I'd rather just push clothes around in a basket to look for a top or bottoms then to stand there folding them.
Jamie McGonagle I have that same habit but I am not going to break it lol I keep the clothes in a laundry bag and put them away in 2-3 days and I'm ok with that
I don't like matching socks or folding underwear, so that usually stays in the basket several days....I eventually get to them, but never right away. other clothes, though....I either hang up or fold while they're still warm - helps eliminate wrinkles so I don't have to iron as much. I even made a shirt folding board (made 2 - 1 for my son, 1 for myself). I have ulnar neuropathy & nerve damage in both arms, so the board helps me get things folded neatly.
I gave up on folding clothes because I. Just. Hate. It! Bought tonnes of Ikea Mulig bars, drilled them to the wall, and as soon as my clothes come out of the dryer, I hang them all up. Socks and undies are just tossed into a basket. I only fold beddings, towels, and wiping clothes.
After a shower, I attach my non-slip bath mat to the tub wall to dry. Just stick a few rows of those grippy things to the wall, and the mat will dry in no time flat! Great videos, by the way, Melissa!
I am REALLY bad about using paper towels to clean, especially the stove top, cuz I hate having greasy towels or cleaning cloths in the laundry. However, I do offset my bad habit by recycling a LOT (always have 3X more recycling than trash).
This! My fiance constantly talks trash about my art room "clutter" but I actually do USE everything I have. I have sewing stuff and all different kinds of paints and art stuff, as well as writing materials. I'm an artist and a writer so I use it all for different things. To me I have everything organized so I know where it is when I reach for it... to him it looks like a cluttered mess. I'm not entirely sure how to make it LOOK organized.
If you want to save articles from old magazines, get a 2 inch binder and a pack of paper sleeves. Whenever you get your next magazine in the mail, clip out the articles you want to keep and slip them in the sleeves or glue them on yardstick so you can still reference them if you're so inclined. This is really nice for recipes. Or, to save space for the more technically inclined, scan it and create a folder for your scanned articles. If you'd like something simpler that you can hold at your fingertips, the OfficeSuite and OfficeSuite Pro apps allow you to take a photo of an image and flatten it to create several types of documents.
It is now 2018 and I'm just finding you! So inspiring. I am minimalizing and right now working in the kitchen. I have just realized I hold onto old lids and containers to the point that if the world runs out...I'll have you covered.
Clorox claims that their wipes clean and disinfect. I will use them some, especially for touch up, and they are very wet. they do a great job of getting off dirt and grime.
I just found your channel and I LOVE IT!! So many great tips and inspiration. I've subscribed and now I'm going to BUY some of your cloths, not only because I just ran out of paper towels and was JUST lamenting that I blow through so many (and it does feel wasteful), but also because I was to SUPPORT your business and ethos. Good for you, and thanks!
I know it’s 2020, but I’m working on getting my house organized and everything needs a place or it’s out. My biggest bad habit is covering surfaces with stuff. My bar and table has had stacks of crap for quite some time now and that ends ASAP!
I use paper towels. I tried micro-fiber cloths, but I have two problems with them. 1. I never have enough for a single washer load, so I get lazy and throw them in with regular towels. I use softener with my towels, so the clothes stop being absorbent. 2. My daughter and grandsons live with us and use them for grungy spills (no matter how many times I tell them not to). But, I will try again. Oh, I forget my reusable shopping bags too. I do have one tip for you that I learned from my mom "never leave a room empty-handed". No clutter or messy surfaces because every time I go from one room to another, I scan the room and take anything that does not belong and put it away. Love your channel.
THANK you for pointing out the difference between clean and sanitary (or disinfected) People don't believe me when I say an item can be dirty, but can also be sanitary at the same time.
I rarely use Clorox bleach because it is hard on clothes and I don't like the harmful chemicals. I do keep a small bottle on hand to soak my mops in to keep them from getting smelly. If you have an alternative to that please let me know.
I never use a sponge. I use the microfiber cloths in the kitchen and change them out every day. Of course doing that I have to have a large supply of microfiber cloths.
Kirsty Macfarlane Start with clothes Then with books/magazines Then with paper, documents, and letters Then odds and ends (paper clips, pencils etc) Then tools and electronics Lastly sentimental items in that order. It isn't about what to throw away but what to keep. Then donate the rest. It will take a lot of time, (it did for me). But at least you know where to start lol
Rolande Theriault put a basket on the island, let the basket control the amount of clutter. Once the basket is full, put the items away. If the item doesn't have a "home" in your home, decide if you have to keep it. If you do, then find it a "home", not a junk drawer or closet. If you don't, then toss it.
Kristy Macfarlane.. try looking up “ Flylady”.. she is great.. teaches about organization in a non-judgemental realistic way .. “ Jump in where you are”. And also a proponent of “ 15 mins at a time”. She always says “ you can do anything for 15 minutes” ... also breaks things down into weekly zones! She’s great!
Yes, I use bleach. For laundry and for disinfecting. Not for cleaning. Glad to hear you make the distinction. So many people confuse spray bleach with spray and wipe cleaner. Not the same things at all.
Our children are grown but I still cook everyday for a family rather than the two of us and with the best of intentions store leftovers "for lunches".... That never happen. My husband said our fridge is like digging for treasure so beginning of the new year...I am trying to make smaller meals. Our fridge has always been a source of contention so happy that less waste and less frustration could be this simple! Thank you for my daily inspirations!! Blessings from Azerbaijan
I've been told by multiple doctors that bleach will only disinfect a surface once all the organic matter that was on it has been removed, so the surface needs to be CLEANED first before using bleach to disinfect it. Now, instead of using bleach to clean, I use straight hydrogen peroxide for most surfaces. It's super cheap (I buy it by the case off Amazon), loosens gunk, and kills germs and bacteria. I even got rid of the pink/orange mold that kept forming in my toilet bowls by cleaning the toilet as usual, pouring 16 oz. of hydrogen peroxide into the tank, flushing, waiting a while (15-30 minutes or so), then repeating the hydrogen peroxide treatment two more times. My reasoning was that each time the toilet was flushed when mold was present, spores were probably aerosolizing and floating up into the channel under the rim, then multiplying inside the channel the water flows through under the rim where the brush can't reach; each flush was probably washing a whole new batch of spores into the bowl. So my aim was to kill spores that might be living in that channel. I did that five years ago, and the pink/orange mold has never come back. I do sometimes have other types of mold that form around the edge of the water in my guest bathroom toilet bowl if it isn't used for a few months, so just I repeat this in there if I see that happening.
I am a housekeeper and I don’t usually use bleach in my own home. I mostly use vinegar and water but when I clean someone else’s house, I usually have to use bleach in the showers because people leave their shower curtain/doors closed and they have a build up of mold and mildew. I spray bleach in the grout and let it set and come back and clean and it’s gone. I can’t wait to try your cleaning cloths 👍🏼😁
Have been following you two for years, love what you do. My bad habit is keeping old study notes. I've gone through with the first cull and about to do the FINAL RUTHLESS CULL of it all. Anything I really really want I'll be prepared to scan and store digitally using Evernote, with backup. If I don't want to do that I won't use it and its rental lease is up! They are up to 21 years old!!! Ridiculous. Looking forward to having all that space.
I'm a "SQUIRREL!" cleaner... I'll start micro-organizing in the middle of doing big stuff first and then realize I'm behind my plan. THEN I start heaping stuff in general vicinity of where it needs to go and sometimes don't get to it. I live in a studio apartment; 25-30% s dedicated to my sewing/quilting hobby and storage and I can get overrun especially in the middle of a project..
My good friend purchased a small plastic basket she puts in an inconspicuous place in her bathroom where they throw wet washcloths until they are laundered-and end up drying in the process. I adopted the idea and love it!
Bad habit is creating piles of stuff (Clothes, books, paperwork) because of limited space and h avent found a place to put them in.. Thanks for your videos! Your a great motivation to maintain a clean environment at all times! God bless you! :-)
YES! I have a clean laundry bed. This is a bed that clean laundry gets dumped on when I need something that is in the clean laundry bag that I did not fold.
When I am done frying something on the stove that is oily, I like to spray it with all purpose spray first and then use paper towels, then a cloth. The paper towels just suck up the grease like magic. My new habit is, I am going to try and handwash more of my tops, they will last so much longer that way.
I try to stay away from bleach because it's so toxic and tend to opt for natural cleaners only. I would love to see a video with natural bleach alternatives!
Hollie Dovie ......There is something called "Grove's Collaberative's".You can Order, and it will be Delivered to You, or You can Buy it in the Grocery Store's. It is All Natural, and Smell's Wonderful. They have different Fragrance's. They have ALOT Of different Cleaner's for EVERYTHING. I have Watchef ALOT Cleaning Video's, and they All swear by it. I am Definitely going to TRY it out !!! I was Buying ALOT at the Dollar Tree, but........... some of the Cleaner's MESS- UP the Finish on THING'S. GOOD LUCK !!! 🌸
i use to work for a person who had there own cleaning business . I don't work with them now but she had me use disinfectant wipes to clean an entire bathroom . yes I agree with you that's not cleaning. let's just say I didn't work for her long. I won't say her name or the company name but anyone out there be careful on who you have helped you clean if you use thumb tack .
Aaaaaaaand I'm watching this video when I should REALLY clean the house (we're selling and it is a mess...), while baby is sleeping and 4 years old is at his grandma's and grandpa's house......... *rolling eyes*
I have a bad habit of not cleaning, not doing a routine & being lazy. This is my year of action & sticking to a daily routine Thanks to your tips in your new book HOLLLAHH.
Just tuned in and I love the helpful fresh ideas. My 2 bedroom apartment is at least 50 years old and I am constantly trying to find new ways to deal with broken down this or that, and no storage space for a growing family of four. Please continue to inform us and mabey add something for apartment thearopy.
Me too! Except not granite!! I ruined my granite counter over a few years :(( so what I do now is a mixture in a pray bottle of half rubbing alcohol & half purified water for the granite counters! No essential oils unfortunately bc they're acidic & break down the materal, but yes! It works well to break down grease too :)
Whats a good water to vinegar ratio for spray cleaning? Also I know Apple cider vinegar is amazing but does it matter which white vinegar you use and brand?
I've worked in a hospital laboratory for 44 years, and BLEACH IS NOT A CLEANER! Using it in hot water negates it's disinfectant properties. It will kill germs in a 10% solution with cold water, but will do nothing to remove dirt and soap scum. There are so many good products on the market; use them instead!
Thanks for sharing. I just wanted to add that for magazines you can tear out the page(s) you want and store them in a binder, or as I like to do you can take a picture of the page(s) you want and then you have a digital copy of them. I also do this when someone is giving me a business card. I take a picture and then give the card back to them. It's more environmentally friendly, you are less likely to lose the card, and they have an extra card to give to someone else.
I hang my wet bath and kitchen towels until they are dry. As a matter of fact, I hang wet clothes to. I don't put them in the hamper until they are dry. When it's time to do laudry I wash kitchen towels separately from other laundry items. I wash bath towels separately also. I do the same for mop heads. I wash mop heads in garment bags to prevent the strings from damaging my washer. I boil sponges and scrub brushes. I often put boiling water on my counter tops after washing them as a final rinse. (Be careful if you do this) I also pour boiling water down my kitchen sink a few times a year as well as my main sewer drain. This will melt the grease and sludge that sometimes builds up, and help it to move along.
not weird! maybe try vinegar instead...it disinfects like bleach but it's non-toxic and it really helps with limescale in the dishwasher. although, you'll have to use more than a tiny amount.
“A pile of Mail, 6 books, a bottle of wine....” for a brief moment I was sure she was looking at me standing next to my breakfast bar, that she just described in detail. 😱😂
One of my cleaning bad habbits is going all over the place in my house and yard. I need to focus on one room at a time. My worst is "I'll do it later" thinking.
I have a big problem with wanting to do to many projects or whatever you want to call them so, I start to get things going then the next thing you know, you have to stop before you finish it. Like so many of us,you forget about that one and start to do the next job. I feel like I never get enough time to finish any of them and yes,I know, don't start one till you finish the first one, lol. I know I am not the only one out here that does this. Love your site.
I never use bleach after watching this great British show about people with an OCD cleaning compulsion & the woman who spent her WHOLE DAY cleaning EVERYTHING with bleach, TWICE A DAY. She was shown how much bacteria still remained on all the surfaces she proudly thought were pristine. And I don't like the smell of bleach which is very long-lasting. The one habit I want to break this year is online shopping........ after I order some of the things you suggested in your video about Christmas gifts for people you don't know what to give. Many thanks. Cheers!
I love my paper towel too. I really prefer them to storing disgusting dirty cloths in my house waiting to have enough of them to wash on a hot cycle with detergent which also costs money. Running a hot wash cycle and using detergent both have an effect on the environment as well. I love disinfecting wipes for quick sanitary clean ups also. I just skip over the parts of her video when I realized that she was about to be critical of things I find rather pleasant to use, hygienic and even cost effect if you can buy the items when on sale.
I have an ex who had a thing about paper towels vs cleaning clothes. No matter which one you chose, he would fly off the handle the handle that the other was a better choice. For me? Cloth is for drying dishes and hands. Paper towels are my choice for pretty well everything else.
Many years ago, we had visiting nurses that insisted we use paper towels for drying our hands. I use paper towels for cleaning the grunge and disgust that would ruin or contaminate cloth cleaning towels. Believe it or not, I used to save my empty paper towel cardboard tubes and sell them in lots of 50 pieces on eBay. I don't know about right now, but a few years ago, they used to sell for about 50 cents a piece.
rosie posie - talking about the environment: it's actually more environmentally friendly to run a hot wash with Eco friendly detergent. Here's why: wet paper towels get thrown into the landfill in airtight plastic bags trapping all that moisture. It's just as bad as disposable diapers, pads, panty liners and the such. All of those keep the moisture locked in slowly depleting the world of clean water. Running a hot load of laundry is an option I prefer a million times over. The electricity for the machine is usually produced either with wind turbines, hydroelectric, solar panels, etc. All renewable energy sources. The water usually isn't dumped into the environment. It usually runs through water clearing and filtering systems before being deposited back into the municipal water reservoirs. The environment was doing so much better in the olden days back when our grandparents were children because nobody used disposable anythings. Surprisingly, Costco has an amazing Eco friendly laundry detergent. I know it's great because I'm allergic to most other detergents. Watkins also sells a great, hypoallergenic, and Eco friendly laundry detergent. Even the container is compostable. :)
My mom used to cut up old clothes that were no longer wearable/donate-able, and use them to wipe out grease from pans and throw them away. Better than tossing the clothes out. It gave the clothes one final use. She also, used cut up, old, clean clothes and pantyhose to tie up storage boxes. We had three walnut trees in our backyard, when I was a kid and my mom would hang the walnuts in old, clean pantyhose, to dry before being shelled. She reused everything at least once.
did u do a video already about how to clean counch pillows? can u do a video of cleaning the surface of stuff animals and pillows that can't be put into a washer?
Belinda Hawj ......Most Stuffed- Animal's, CAN Go In The Washer/ Dryer. Also The Sofa Cushion's That "Zip" On & Off. Done It Hundred's Of Time's. You'd Be Surprised At The Fabric's That You CAN Wash & Dry.
Clean My Space I been in a deep depression for so long and my home 🏡 was so unorganized , I trying to get better this year that's my goal ..... and thanks so much for all your help
I have a circa 1930s shower that really traps moisture. I had to throw out my non-skid rubber bath tub mat because i couldn't really get the bottom clean. For 2 years now i have rinsed off and hung up my new mat to dry -- it's always perfect, no problem! I do have to leave the shower curtains and window open after a shower to allow moisture to dry, but at least I do wipe down the vinyl shower curtain after a shower along with the tiles, and that has helped a lot.
Maybe I am old school but I was taught that in bathrooms and kitchens to fill a bucket or kitchen sink with soap and bleach then go to town cleaning. I have a stack of cheap wash clothes that I use and then just toss them in the wash. Every night I fill my kitchen sink with soap and a little bleach to rinse my dishes before putting in the dishwasher then I wipe down the entire kitchen before going to bed. I do keep Clorox wipes next to the potty for spot cleaning if someone has an oops. This method is also good for high touch areas such as door knobs and light switches. I was amazed at the beginning of March 2020 that basic cleaning supplies were left of the store shelf but toilet paper was missing. One way to keep from getting sick is to clean your house.
I use bleach quite rarely, on stained laundry. Since you mentioned CLOTH napkins, I wanted to share the way I grew up using them: You need individual napkin rings! This allows you to clear the table after supper, then find your own napkin to use at the breakfast counter, etc. This way you can reuse the napkins for a few days before washing them. Washing napkins after each meal is quite wasteful of water, detergent, etc!
If you could ever advise us how to avoid overwhelm when having to clean, which of course leads to procrastination, please, let us know. You'll be doing a very good deed. :)
No bleach in my house!! For the past 10 years I've been cleaning and desinfenfectin my home with vinager and I love it, not to mention that it is more environmentally friendly that bleach or other household cleaning producs.
I use 1 or 2 tbsps. in a quart spray bottle (learned this from hospital cleaning team) clean surface then lightly spray to sanitize, by the time I get around the kitchen or bathroom I then use damp cloth to rinse surfaces that can bleach be used on. Bleach is biodegradable and in small quantities wont hurt your pipes (plumber hubby has used it to clean up surfaces after repairs done).
yoly507 ......Suggest-ion...MAKE PILE'S. 1. Trash 2. Go Through 3. Save Get a Basket for the "go through pile"and make it a point to Do it once a WEEK.
I've got to get off my paper towel use. I worked for the MCS (Memphis City Schools) in Sp. Ed. working with the most severe of the Autistic population and we used a gazillion PT a day. But I love idea of microfiber towels. Queen of Clean you got it goin' on!!!
I used bleach for years. If it smelt bleachy I was happy. Then I discovered natural cleaning with oils, pretty sure it was from you. I've not bought any other cleaners all I need is water, vinegar, baking soda and oils. My home is cleaner and smells great. Thank you xx
Your drying mat is a bad habit! Hand washed dishes need to be elevated so they can properly air dry. If you continue to place them face down on a drying mat, the inside will not dry and may begin to mildew/mold as well as the mat if it is not hung to dry or laundered every day. Get a rack already!
Dubs J Thats dumb the only thing might mold are travel mugs and bottles. They don't mold. If did then restaurant busness would be in trouble since after they solutions at restaurants you have to let them dry you are not suppose to dry them.
Katherine Canon Yes, let them dry on a rack that air can easily get under and around. Not on a mat/towel. That would be considered contamination in the restaurant business. Maybe you should re-read my initial comment!
i don't know if anyone else mentioned this but in my opinion the bath mat should be up upside down on edge of bath so the suction cups don't restick which you were trying to avoid (it looked like you up suction cups back down)
Uhohhhh I loveeee Clorox foaming spray bleach !!!! It’s my go to product o: also if you have old magazines that aren’t too junked up, think about donating them to a nursing home! I work with dementia patients and they love flipping through magazines and news papers! 😇😇😇
