Aviation cocktail: 2oz gin 3/4oz fresh squeezed lemon juice 1/2oz maraschino liqueur 1/2oz crème de violette Shake with ice, strain into coupe glass, garnish with lemon and/or cherry. Should be a nice light purple color, primarily from the crème de violette.

Normally, (IMO) Tom tends to knock it out of the park and take these "dial" offs no problem. And while he did bring in the most interesting and varying selections, I think Andrew brings it home this time. The Seikos - clear winners but the Rally was very nice. I feel like Andrew took so many Ls he played his selections very safe to get a long sought win. Either that - or I have become a Seiko fanboi.

Certina DS Action Diver at 38mm should definitely get a mention. At 38mm, ISO-certified diver, 300m water resistance, Powermatic 80 movement, the watch is absolutely a bliss for small wrist wearers who want a decent Swiss automatic diver at affordable price. I used to own one but I realize it was just a bit too small for my wrist. I wish they could release it at 39-41mm to fit more wrist sizes.

Well done! The +40 sec/day spec on that Seiko movement swings me to the other side. I know the watch usually does much better, but I have received NOB Seiko running +30 and over, but they have that covered. "It is within specs, mate". Cracking the back voids the warranty and you risk bricking the watch. Seiko, with your pedigree, think of throwing us poor lads a crumb and get that precision down to +20 or even +15. Hopefully the watch will still out perform +20. All IMHO and with a smile of course. I really like the Serica field watch. I may even save up and buy one. You do a fantastic job with this channel and I look forward to the uploads.

Seiko without a doubt have something somewhere that should cover all general categories including new ones that we never knew existed. They might even have a piece designed for cave dwellers that uses a sun dial with a little remote LED fire fly to emulate the sun and a built in compass, different hemisphere no problem just flip that firefly. Tom wins this one. All good fun guys. Cheers for sharing.

I love affordable chronographs and actually use the complication to time stuff constantly with my Daily Driver being a Junghans Form C. One thing that annoys me to no end though, and it's something clearly visible in your two choices, is the negative impact that Seiko movements have on the chronograph market. I love Seiko and the movements they make are great (both in quality and at a price point) but they do insist on putting a 24 hour subdial, good only for submarine operators and those awaking from a coma, into each and every chronograph movement they offer. Thanks to the fact that Seiko movements are the obvious choice for microbrands and affordable time pieces, combined with Seikos boneheadedness of not just giving us a usable chronograph hour dial, 95% of all chronographs below 500usd and 65% below 1000usd are burdened with a subdial that serves no purpose for the core feature of a chronograph, timing. These subdials also look misplaced and leads to many watches I'd love to own (including the two in the video), simply not being for me. If I want to time only up to 60 minutes, any rotating bezel can serve that purpose. If the Watchfinders team needs a video idea, how about this: The best affordable Chronographs that can time beyond 60 minutes. And manufacturers, please consider Ronda movements. I know they are more expensive, but there are people willing to pay a premium for the ability to actually use their chronographs for some extended time tracking. Lastly, if anyone from Seiko is reading this, please do some research into how many people actually want a 24h dial on a chronograph, especially one that can't even show a second time zone. Maybe I am wrong and there is massive demand for that, but I'd be doubtful.
@andoletube
@andoletube Год назад
Yes! It's become a real bugbear of mine too. It annoys me so much that anytime I see a multi sub-dial watch, I look immediately for the dreaded 24 hour dial, and if it's there, I'm not. It annoys me no end and has literally stopped me from buying a chronograph watch. As you say, it seems to have become an industry standard thing now, so I guess no affordable chronograph for me any time soon.
@jpdemer5
@jpdemer5 Год назад
I think chronographs are actually used by their owners only slightly more often than helium release valves and tachymeter scales. Check Seiko's sales numbers if you doubt it.
@exp2745
@exp2745 Год назад
@@jpdemer5 But both of those, even when they are not used by the owners, at least can serve a purpose for the type of watch they are attached to and don't look out of place. The 24h subdial is like putting a helium escape valve on a chronograph or alternatively a tachymeter scale on a dive watch. Out of place, if nothing else. Sales wise, Seikos movements are simply so great at their price point that they sell regardless, but I suspect few, if any would complain about replacing those 24h subdials with one actually fitting the watch, even if they never use it. There is a reason why above 1000usd, you will hardly find any chronograph with a 24h subdial, even though the vast majority of owners at a price point, that might warrant more out there subdials, hardly use their Daytona, Chronomaster or Moonwatch for timing either.

I really can't get why they declare such bad precision for the Seiko 4R movements, I believe it's because of lack of regulation during assembly and not because of poor movement as one can suppose, because I own quite few of them and, after I regulate them on my timegrapher, they generally are all within +/- 2/4 seconds/day... The 24h useless subdial of the Boldr (and Seiko) chrono is a total deal breaker for me, also the image at 8:31 is false: the 24h subdial can't indicate that with the other hands in those position. I'd rather go for a VRATISLAVIA CONCEPTUM - HERITAGE CHRONO, same price, but with a more "car inspired" dial and a similar movement without stupid 24h subdials.

I own a mido Ocean Star and it has one of the best, if not THE best, bracelets I’ve ever seen, not just in the $1,000 price range, this could be said compared to watches with much higher prices. Brushed links with dull edges give this premium vibe. The bracelet fits the wrist perfectly and makes the watch quite pleasant to wear without any worries of clipping hair or dangling noise. The diver’s extension is easy to operate with two push release buttons and makes a lot of sense: when extended to the maximum the watch can be easily worn even wearing a thick diving suit.

Presage for dress? Hmph. Looks more every day to me. How about a Seiko solar tank instead? Dress watches should be thin and discreet (sp?). Field and every day watches definitely need to be solar for accuracy and utility. You can't be adjusting your time every other day on safari. Automatics are ok for every day but you'll have to adjust them on Monday mornings and live with their bulk all the time. I say go solar for accuracy and reliability, specially on an occasional use watch.
