@@AdventuresAndNaps You might enjoy James Acaster's audiobook "classic scrapes". He's a british comedian who gets into weird situations quite a lot. You may have seen him on WILTY.
@Phil Becker I said the same to Alanna last week regarding Taskmaster and Bob being a national treasure. When you first hear his stories, you know they can't be true. Then they are. Now there's no way of knowing what is true and what is a lie. He even made an advert about queuing at a chippy entertaining.
"I do not watch a lot of television" sounds like "I do not actually drink that much" I am picturing Alanna sitting watching tv with her bottles around going "oh yea" ;)
I think we Brits watch you so much, not only for your GSOH and personality, but because mainstream media often tell us,in one way or another, that we don't have a British culture. Its great that people like you are here to define it for us.
One of the contestants on BakeOff started crying because something didn't go to plan. And then got even more upset because she knew her breakdown would be broadcast to the country. So the presenters and other contestants just started swearing really loudly for 10 minutes to make the footage unusable so it would have to get edited out. How wholesome!
I'm irish and I cannot stand that idiotic stupid rubbish show. It's so bad. Most irish people cannot stand Brendan O Carrol either. So british people can keep the idiot
It's actually good to hear that someone who was not raised on British TV finds a lot to like. I think we Brits tend to take it all for granted and I've lost count of the times when friends have said to me that 'last night's TV was rubbish' or that they couldn't find anything to watch. That said, thank goodness you didn't pick any soaps Alanna - you've restored my faith in human kind!!
My dad absolutely loved Fawlty Towers...in fact he would record episodes on video cassettes back in the 80's...remember those bulky VHS cassettes? Btw I'm from Australia...so maybe you had a different brand in the UK?
Only Fools and Horses was and still is the best English comedy. The trouble with Fawlty Towers is there's so few episodes, whilst OFAH is just as funny and ran from the early 80s into the early 90s!
Oh yeah, and don't forget Are You Being Served, and Mr Bean! Seattle area here. My dad passed away recently at 102 and still had and watched his old cassettes all the time. Nothing like good British humor.
For any international viewers out there we should explain that panel shows typically involve comedians answering questions (ostensibly to score points). However, no-one really cares how many points they score because they are more interested in making each other laugh.
If you've not seen it I'd recommend Detectorists. Possibly the most English TV programme ever. And for someone that likes detective stuff Broadchurch is a good one.
Still Game, the best comic sitcom from the BBC in many years, there's been nowt since it finished, I just don't see the attraction in Mrs Brown's Boys, doesn't work for me.
I love all comedy programmes and there are some good American and British sitcoms but I truly believe only fools and horses is the funniest show ever made and I don’t think there will ever be anything funnier in the future. Problem is people think don’t give it a chance as its older and also the first couple of series are great, but it reaches its peak later on
@@jakeclough8090 In Serbia this TV show has never ending popularity, it's a social phenomena. I'm personally a millennial, and I watched the show multiple times and never got bored. Outstanding slang and charisma, with many English words I heard only on this show, design to work against the Rodney's self-esteem. :D
trr yy oh it’s just the best. I’m only 17 and it annoys me many people don’t give it a chance because they think it’s old. Definitely the funniest sitcom ever. It’s so well written
I have bitter sweet memories of Bullseye, I loved the show but it was on Sunday evenings in the 80’s, that conflicted with the back to school on Monday feelings 😂
@@mauricecasey5556 At the risk of living up to your post, I think that's a bit harsh. The first few modern series were very good, lost it's way a bit since though.
Mrs Brown's Boys is terrible! Lowest common denominator tv. It's mainly been successful by being given a prime time slot, with very little sitcom competition, over recent years. It's a shame because we have a long tradition of truly excellent sitcoms.
I'm from Ontario too and I fell in love with Call the Midwife off the recommendation of a British RU-vidr. But I recently started watching Would I lie to you? off of your recommendation and loved it. I subsequently found 8 out of 10 cats does countdown and I love that as well. There's something about British tv shows -- they're wholesome and not overly dramatic and I think that's why I love them haha
Mortimer & Whitehouse : Gone Fishing is a great show, even if you don’t know anything about or have no interest in fishing. They’re both just hilarious.
As a foreigner i enjoyed watching "Fawlty towers" ( i am a big fan of the Monty Pythons and of John Cleese) , "Keeping up appearances" and "Blackadder" More recenyly i would add to check out "The Detectorist" for a nice county side feeling. TV shows oriented and for popculture QI with Stephen Fry are gold, Newswipe from Charlie Brooker is also enlightening for some cultural/historical "facts".
Favourite Bullseye moment... Jim Bowen: In Greek mythology, what was the food of the gods? Contestant: Sorry, don't know. Pass. Jim Bowen: Apparently it was Ambrosia. You'd think the gods would eat summat better than rice pudding, wouldn't you?
Classic. I saw a great Xmas special a while back where they blatantly edited it not so subtly, so the celebrities were getting a suspiciously high score.
@@AdventuresAndNaps Hi Alanna. Not connected to this post, but it maybe something of interest to you, and make your followers aware about, or should that be aboot ?😆 Check out CANZUK international on Change.org. just had an email update as I was watching one of you older posts, it is a petition to promote a freedom of movement agreement between Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK, similar idea to the EU. One of your Canadian politicians is backing the plan too.
Peep Show, I must try again, I like Mitchell & Webb but the series hasn't worked for me yet. The IT Crowd, yes, a classic!, up there with Father Ted and Black Books, I laugh till I hurt watching those!
I love Doctor Who, but I am not one to get angry at people who don't like the same things I do - firstly it would be a boring world if we all liked exactly the same things, plus if you hear someone gushing about something you have never watched, it may inspire you to give it a try, and that is how you sometimes end up loving something you might never have otherwise given a chance to!
She is right to avoid it, I haven't watched it since 1985, but others in my household watch it, so I pick up their views from their chats. Even the ones who watch it say it has been limping along for about 6 years on an ever steeper decline.
@@neilbuckley1613 The problem with Doctor Who is that it's a show that invites opinion. The show has gone on so long and is so pervasive in various media that the fans all feel that they own it to some extent. As a result, almost everything they do will be publicly maligned by a loud minority, whilst the majority either approve or keep their mouths shut. I'm not guilt-free of this myself but you tend to find more criticism of Doctor Who along the lines of "it's crap now because of this ill-defined reason" than you do in many non "cult" franchises
I lost count the amount of times ppl said "omg you HAVE to watch GoT"...2 years later I did watch it and it was predictable garbage, I rarely recommend tv/films to ppl unless I know they actually share an interest in that genre.
akt it was up to season 6. After that was just an unfunny mess. Since then I think I remember laughing three times at the show. And two of them were in the recent feature length. A shame really cause I genuinely loved that show to the point of obsession.
Couldn't blame you for not wanting to watch British soaps. They're very downbeat and depressing. You can feel suicidal after one episode. Dr Who was good at one time. You're not missing anything now. You're absolutely right about the comedy panel shows. They're great fun. Some really good choices there.
there were several mistakes where certain legendary songs were played and weren't released until a few years later, but generally, a terrific and inventive drama and very accurate (i'm that old) with the casual racism and sexism but we laughed anyway.
I am an American who has a huge love for British tv shows. Have ever since I was a little kid. Some of my most favorite British tv shows are: Keeping Up Appearances Are You Being Served? Monty Python Fawlty Towers The Vicar Of Dibley Rosemary And Thyme My Family (I bought the entire box set of that really funny show.) Last of the Summer Wine Waiting For God and Doctor Who As for Doctor Who I am a huge massive fan of that show. I think it is the most greatest British tv show ever made.
Canadian here. When we visited London the hotel had the Challenge channel. We watched way too many game shows including The Chase and Bullseye. I have heard of all of these shows but Taskmaster. One of my faves is 8 out of 10 Cats for panel shows. And the IT Crowd is awesome. I have watched it all twice now.
Hi Alanna, it's "so to speak" that you were looking for. Great video by the way. Mrs Brown's Boys should be sent for trial at The Hague for crimes against humanity.
A beautiful show; and they spend equal amounts of time in the glorious countryside and in the pub chatting. You feel you're there with them. And what a theme song.
Another great panel show is QI - they have had 18 seasons so far - each one has been themed around one of the letters of the alphabet (the latest being Q - they are going in order...)
They do make mistakes though. Like claiming that Florence Nightingale invented the pie chart which is an urban myth and almost everything that has anything to do with German is very iffy. Claiming that 'Doppeltgänger' is the proper German word is utterly hilarious it is so wrong.
Thankyou, finally someone else who can't stand soaps, I thought I was alone, virtually everyone I know likes at least one British soap opera, wisdom comes through you tube,at last.
I don't think I'm a fan of most of the shows listed here but I do like The Chase especially Bradley Walsh as the host. Certainly don't like Dr Who and Bullseye but I am more into old skool British sitcoms - here are my favorite sitcoms in order: 1. Only Fools and Horses (this is a must watch!) 2. Some Mothers Do 'Av 'Em 3. Fawlty Towers 4. Blackadder 5. Keeping Up Appearances 6. Porridge 7. Open All Hours 8. One Foot In The Grave 9. George and Mildred 10. On The Buses
0:58 Dr. Who (she doesn't like) 1:39 The Chase 3:53 Bullseye 5:29 The great british bake off 7:13 Mock the week 8:30 Have I got news for you 11:05 Fleabag 13:16 Luther (Season 1) 14:42 Killing Eve 16:11 Would I lie to you 18:02 Taskmaster
I love The Chase, Great British Bake off, Mock the week (for have i got news for you I think you have to live in England to really appreciate) WILTY and Taskmaster. Any others like these you can suggest?
I can't believe you haven't included Gogglebox 😱 I also found it hilarious you're watching old re-runs of Bullseye 🤣 I haven't watched that since the eighties "stay out of the black, go into the red, there's nothing in this game for two in a bed" yet I still remember that saying!!
Old Brit lady with an old Canadian husband who for some reason can't get enough of old '70s comedies (I think watching them on PBS as a kid made him want to come to UK) we here in the UK are currently obsessing about Richard Osman's House of Games. You might like it when you get back here, its yet another "celebrity" quiz/panel show. Best thing about UK is that at least on the BBC there are NO ad breaks. You get to see the whole program from beginning to end without interruption!
Sam Tyler : "An overweight, over-the-hill, nicotine-stained, borderline-alcoholic homophobe with a superiority complex and an unhealthy obsession with male bonding". Gene Hunt : "You make that sound like a *bad* thing!"
Loved "Life On Mars" and "Ashes To Ashes" . But I think you should check out the original ie " The Sweeney" and you will see were the idea of 70s policing in Life On Mars came from .
The Mighty Boosh ! Noel Fielding (Great British Bake Off ) was co writer and co star. Its on Netflix. Its so eccentric, outrageous and I'd love it if you gave it a chance. The seasons actually get better and better and its charm increases on the rewatch. THE UK MISSES YOU LOADS THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO IT WAS FANTASTIC LIST, ALANNA : ))
@@DaveBartlett lol its the 2 rock finger salute. Not sure how it looks on non-android. Am I a retard for not knowing what a unitard was, lol? O I googled it 🤔🙄😁 what is going on ☺️. Have a bikini emoji 👙, I have no idea what that's gonna turn out like 👍
The great thing about 'Would I Lie To You' is how the guests and the captains find the stories they hear so damned funny and that comes right through the TV screen, encouraging you to laugh with them. Great TV. Good choice!
I’m sure I’m not the first to comment re: Mrs Brown’s Boys but thank you for leaving that honking great pile of shite off your list of good shows. No one should ever have to endure that rubbish 🙏🏻
I know this might be a controversial suggestion but have you tried British Radio? Particularly Radio Four. There are comedy panel shows on there that usually feature all those guys that appear on your favorite TV shows! Lee Mack, Paul Merton, David Mitchell, Dara O'Briain etc. Try, "I'm sorry I haven't a clue", "Just a Minute", "The Museum of Curiosities", "The Infinite Monkey Cage" (That one is a bit cerebral). They are great for long journeys in the car or quiet Sunday afternoons lying on a sun lounger etc. There are also good dramas on the radio like Lord of the Rings, Good Omens etc. Have you tried QI on the TV? It stands for "Quite Interesting". It is funny, outragious, and educational at the same time. It was originally hosted by Steven Fry but is now led by Sandi Toksvig. Incidentally, did you know that Bradley Walsh is in Doctor Who? He also appeared in the English version of Law and Order and wasn't bad. Keep up the good work.
Popcorn. Cider, apple, pear, sweet, dry, added flavours. Straight from the bottle. Poured into a glass. In the sunshine. In a pub garden. With friends. No popcorn then crisps you favourite flavour. More sunshine. Great pair of sunglasses. Talking about stuff that makes you laugh. Lockdown. Will be glad when it is over. Great video.
You should give Red Dwarf a look. Though it started out a long time ago they make a new series every now and again and it's one of the few things that is still as funny as when it first started. There has also been a brand new feature length episode recently.
Everybody should watch the Patrick Troughton episodes of Doctor Who from 1967-69! It should be compulsory. He was an absolute legend! Some episodes don't exist anymore, though!!
Phoenix Nights; Father Ted; Black Books; Still Game; Bottom; Blackadder... all comedy gold. Also a bit older: Waiting for God; One Foot in the Grave; Keeping Up Appearances; A Very Peculiar Practice.
I have never watched an episode of Cold Feet. Sometimes you just have to decide that you can't watch everything and there's no point starting on something you know you aren't going to have the time to watch in full. Plus there's RU-vid, and there's this Canadian lass who's pretty funny, so...
Fresh Meat. It's great. Also The Detectorists. It's been mentioned in other comments. It's very whimsical, gentle humour, so well written and acted. It's set in rural Essex so it will look very familiar to you if you've been living in the Kent countryside. Also, I've met Bob Mortimer, you'll be pleased to know he's very sweet and down to earth and exactly like he is on the telly.
Agree with you over and over, I saw Mock the Week when in UK (I'm in Australia) LOVE IT. Yes, Bob Mortimer is one of the best. Brit comedy is intelligent, many of the best are highly educated people.
"Yes, Prime Minister!" that's the one I kinda used to like back in the day. The show is about as old as me. These days those it doesn't seem to be too much dated, since it looks like politics haven't changed that much lol good short example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nSXIetP5iak.html
Can't believe people still watch that. I think the last full episode I saw, batman Fred drove Annie Walker's rover into a lake. How long ago was that ?
In 5 you have won a clock radio and cassette player in 8 you have won a toaster that looks like Winston Churchill, in 9 you have won a nest of tables made from paper mache.
I'd never in a million years have guessed one of your fav shows would be bullseye, just a show very much echoing the British pub culture. Never thought it'd have any wider appeal outside the uk.
I agree with many of your choices, especially HIGNY and WILTY. I would also include comedy shows like The Inbetweeners, Friday Night Dinner, Peep Show, etc.
"you could have won if you weren't such losers" lol 2 prizes behind the curtains. The one you get if you win.....an old car or dishwater and the uktra modern Speedboat that you "would" have won...
Alanna, I recommend you to watch Bottom, it's one of the best comedy shows of all time. It's a violent but funny slapstick show from the 90's. I'm sure you'll love it.
