I can certify with my own experience that rice is a very complete source of nutrition. You can just hold on to rice many days with no problems. I was a political prisoner of the the Venezuelan dictatorship for more than 4 years. During that time I ate white rice with 0% salt for 20 consecutive days at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Rice does work. Thank you for the video.

As someone who has had to live off pretty scant funds for extended periods of time, I can attest that if you have enough dried beans, well-stored grains, canned veggies, and dried spices (including bullions), you can live off that for a VERY long time. Food bank pinto bean chili (which is pretty much a few cups of soaked and cooked dried pinto beans, a can of tomatoes or mild salsa, a diced sauteed onion and bell pepper, a ton of TVP, and some Dollar Tree spices) coupled with that box of corn bread made into muffins was pretty much my lunch and dinner every day of my junior year of university. Either a bowl of oatmeal with some dried fruit and roasted nuts or peanut butter on toast for breakfast, and I was eating for about $1-$2/day. Dried beans and rice also store really nicely in glass jars in your pantry (so does flour, so does cornmeal, so do oats, so do nuts & seeds, so do dried fruits, etc.). I got in the habit of using my $20/week grocery budget to get my groceries, my toiletries, food & litter for my cat, and I'd always buy one extra thing not on my list with whatever I had leftover (whether it was a can of tomatoes, or corn, or a bag of beans or box of bullion cubes, or package of pasta). Just one extra thing a week means at the end of the year, you have 52 food items in storage. Getting a side hustle like driving for Lyft or delivering for DoorDash (if you have a car), donating blood plasma for cash if you're able, even answering surveys online for gift cards adds up if you're not counting on that money.

Many dried beans can be sprouted indoors in 5-10 days. 2 tablespoons of beans can be grown into 1 to 1.5 lbs of fresh sprouts depending on how long you grow it. And you don't need to order expensive sprouting seeds; the cheap dried beans at the supermarket and an empty plastic bottle will do. Sprouted mung beans, adzuki, lentils, peas and sunflowers are especially easy to grow and quite delicious. Watch a few sprouting videos on YT to get the hang of it.

Canned tomato is acidic and will not last much past their date as they will eat the can making them taste metallic and breach the can, so go for jarred sauces for your pasta sauce. That plastic you see in some cans have a synthetic female hormone in them and will soy boy you as well as cause cancer. Lentil curries can spice things up on the cheep. You use bullion with them to stretch a can of meat. If you have a bland pallet then you probably will not like the high rated recipes. Bland version. You don't see much Burmese recipes because they are very conservative recipes. www.myrecipes.com/recipe/burmese-chicken-curry-with-yellow-lentils-kalapei-kyetharhin I just use angel hair pasta, but it is intended for Chinese egg noodles or rice. @@throughput6674 There are e-bikes in all varieties like road bikes and mountain bikes and everything in between. Mountain bikes tend to be more expensive as they have more components like suspension systems, so they are not as widely known or available due to costs. If you plan to use an e-bike plan to have a small bike trailer as well. You do not want to have all your kit on the bike like a touring bike's bags as it makes maneuvering a pain on off road trails, and backpacks are not comfortable or safe for long term use on a bike as your shoulders will become painful swollen or worse in time. The trailer will massively increase your cargo capacity and safety, it also allows for a second or larger battery pack, and makes having a mobile solar system possible. Also some trailers designed for bikes can also function as a wheel barrow when not on the bike, say for collecting firewood or water for instance. What most people do not consider is that bikes and especially e-bikes require maintenance and parts, be prepared here as well. Tubes, tools, chain links, etc. This will add complexity to your choice of an e-bike as an escape vehicle. Though could be an excellent scavenger vehicle using a pickup or camper as a base vehicle to operate from.

Hello CP, May I add, beans at seven years of storage, harden. No amount of boiling, soaking, Pressure canning, will soften them to be eaten. However, mill them into bean flour, then add the bean flour into boiling water, makes very good "refried beans", very useable... I made tacos at a church function, by milling and boiling, every one was pleased...

Here is a grid-down pasta salad made with a one-burner butane or propane stove. Ingredients: 1 or 2 cans oil-packed tuna, 1 small can sliced black olives drained, vinegar to taste, 1 package dry short pasta pieces (I like the multicolor rotini pasta), salt and Italian seasoning to taste. Instructions: Cook the pasta in water until al dente, drain and put into a large bowl. Flake the tuna, mix it and its oil with a little vinegar, salt and Italian seasonings. Add the tuna mixture and the olives to the pasta and toss until mixed. Serve and eat right away if you do not have refrigeration. Sprinkle each serving with some grated Parmesan cheese if you have any. Also good if topped with crumbled cooked bacon (really anything tastes better with bacon).

I'm just now able to comment, because a weather event called a Derecho unexpectedly developed on Monday Aug 10 in Iowa. It had 100+ mph winds for over an hour where I live in Central Iowa, and the level of destruction was unbelievable! I just got my power back a couple of hours ago on today Friday Aug 14. It's hot and humid here, so living with no power for 4 1/2 days was pretty miserable. But I think what happened is exactly why you should prep. We had no warning. If you don't know, a Derecho is an inland hurricane. We had at Cat3! I was driving around town running errands and was caught off guard. I took me an hour to get home. Trees toppled, power lines down....on every street. I had to back track and turn around go back...on and on until I finally made it home. This disaster is still ongoing. Many people are facing another week of no power because the destruction is statewide. Dinner Monday night was Chef Boyar Dee ravioli prepared on our gas grill outside. Tuesday - spent the morning driving around town trying to find ice., but I did get 40lbs on my 4th stop. I didnt eat all day until dinner....velveeta shells & cheese and canned BBQ Beef over some bread. Wednesday...ice search again....found it at an open grocery store, so I bought steak and grilled it for dinner....Thursday morning....had to take my husband for a post-op dr appt.....then ice search....made sandwiches....ate a lasagna that thawed from the freezer for dinner but not enjoyable because it hot and we were hot already.....finally power this morning. Almost total loss of fridge and freezer food. We need a generator. Anyway be prepared to make due for a day or two at least.

Glad you made it through. We had a power outage the other night. Everything was pitch back so light was the immediate need. I experienced the Derecho also. A week without power and limited resources was a good trial run that showed me what I need. Gas sold out..now keep my tanks topped and containers full. All candles, tarps, tree removal tools, generators and campstoves sold out. I now have an ample supply of candles, lighters, flashlights and batteries, battery stick up lights, solar lights, extra tarps, homemade rocket stoves, lint balls and dry burn materials. Perhaps I'll buy extra chainsaw blades and oil considering it took months to cut up all those trees. Thank God we didn't go through that during winter!
@richardelliott9511
@richardelliott9511 3 года назад
That is the type of realistic event that we all should be prepped for and my 1st goal in prepping. Last winter's Texas event really brought that home for me. So many people came home after the power was restored to secondary damage from frozen and burts pipes. My initial goal is to be able to get by for a week with food and water plus auxiliary fuel enough to stay healthy and keep the house from freezing and then build upon that for larger events. Also keep in mind if you're on a municipal sewage system, that with a wide ranging power outage sewage may backup and your toilet won't work. Have the equipment on hand to block off sewage exits in your home that are at a low level such as basement stationary tubs, bath room facilities or Laundry drains to prevent sewage from coming in.

I don't know the calorie count, but dried kelp or wakame seaweed is very synergistically nutrient dense. We make a delicious broth from it (does not taste like the ocean) and we add some lemon juice to balance it out. We also cold brew organic alfalfa pellets which can be gotten at a local animal feed store - the roots go down deep and thus very nutrient dense. I love canned peas with Uncle Ben's original converted rice and some fat or oil added. Fat is very satiating and calorie dense and keeps the gall bladder ducts lubricated and moving (no stones).

I've said it before and I'll say it again!! Hardtack and Pemmican is the way to go for long term storage and you can do so many things with it. making your own is insanely cheap I wrap mine in 4 piece packets in foil then vacuum seal them. I'll be long dead before they even think of going bad. If anyone wants a good recipe I can post it. The pemmican I mold into muffin bar trays then wrap in foil and vacuum seal. If you have plenty of these two as well as rice and beans and dehydrated or freeze dried veges you will be living like a king!!

I own a small Harvest Right freeze dryer with the oil free pump. I wish I had a bigger one. But good Lord, it takes SO long to process foods. An entire week processing back to back loads = maybe 4 days worth of food for someone being very conservative with their calories. I also have a pressure canner and an Excalibur dehydrator, but freeze dried has the best shelf life for sure.

the great thing about store bought bagged beans is they are both seeds and food. you can test viability by wetting a paper towel placing some beans on the towel fold it over and place them in a zip bag or plastic lidded tub, in a warm location. You will need to check them about 5-7 days later 14 at most. They should sprout.

I've been stocking up harvest to harvest the old fashioned but very delicious way - I can. As Lincoln once said, "We eat what we can, and what we can't, we can." Every Sept, I make gallons of lentil or vegetable or beef stew - making gallons is actually easy to do. I cut beef, veggies, and throw them together with barley, and let them cook till tender and thick. I add tomatoes for flavor, herbs, anything I feel like - even a tsp or two of mustard to give it a bit of a kick. Then I pressure can them in quarts. I have had jars two years old and in excellent quality when I finally break them open to heat up - and I heat them for 10 minutes to make sure I kill what potential botulism is in there - as you actually should do with supermarket food in cans, as well. * Dried beans can keep almost forever - they do get hard after several years and nearly impossible to cook till tender, but a little bit of baking soda, which you should also store, will break up the hardened fibers, and beans will cook deliciously and tenderly. You may add rice - i like to add barley - and throw in either fresh vegetables or you can can peas / carrots / celery / onions in quart jars to add to the beans later - OR, you can dry the peas/ carrots / onion and celery (I have a propane stove with a pilot light that never shuts off, so I can throw sheets of veggies to dry overnight - sometimes it takes 2 to get all the moisture out), then you can store those dried veggies in jars to be used when making stews or soups. There's no shelf life on the dried veggies and they take up much less room to store. * Also, dried bread, stored in metal cans, will plump to their "just pulled out of the oven" goodness when sprinkled with water and closed up in a paper bag and placed in a low oven to rehydrate. Or use them dry for dunking in your soups and stews, or for croutons. I like to add nutritional yeast and eggs to my homemade bread for extra protein. This bread, dried and stored, will give you an extra punch of protein when you need it. There's also canned bread supermarkets carry in the baked bean section. I actually love it. Slathered in honey, it's a real treat. * Corn starch and canned or powdered milk will be wonderful to make homemade pudding - either choc or van or blueberry or whatever your choice of flavor. Whisk a tablespoon of cornstarch to 2 cups of milk, bring to a boil till thickened, and pour over a handful of choc chips - when chips are softened, whisk them in the milk and you will have lovely choc. pudding - or if vanilla, just pour in a few teaspoons of vanilla extract. The kids will love it. *Having your own flower, sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda and yeast is a must for bread or muffins or biscuits or pancakes on a cold winter morning. If yeast is hard to come by, as it was here last year, there are lots of YT videos that show you how to make your own sour dough starter, which is all the gold-miners had back in 1849 - the only thing is you have to keep feeding the sour dough starter, and if you forget, it dies. Sad. 😪 *If you have even an 1/8th of an acre of land, you can grow a year's supply of green beans, potatoes and winter squash - the last two are great storers for the winter and the green beans can be grown up on the fence (climbing variety) which leaves lots of room in the small plot of land for tomatoes and potatoes, which could be grown in plastic bins, but are best just tossed on the ground and covered with hay / straw - no digging - and for the size of land about 2 or 3 dining tables, you can get 50 lbs of potatoes to store for winter use. I did this last year. Amazing! Sweet potatoes, the same, even in cold climates. Thing is; grow only that which you love to eat and which will store without refrigeration (excepting green beans), especially if you are squished for room, and you will be shocked at how richly you can feed yourself and family. * If you can get your hands on an old fashioned treadle sewing machine, do it. A person who can sew will always have clothes. Learn the arts of knit and crochet, too. Make friends with someone who sells sheep or yak yarn - buying it will help out the both of you. ^ There's more, but this is not my video. Thank you, Nate, for doing what I don't - you are inspiring many people through your videos!!!.

Another great thing to do with your stockpiles is actually to TEST it! Try living off only foods you actively stockpile for a month to see just how viable they are to actually last you through a survival situation. This is important because you don't want to be stuck with food you don't actually like, or food that doesn't agree with you that might give you digestion problems, promote allergies, or increase inflammation responses like irritable bowel syndrome. You also need to test just how well balanced it is. Are you getting enough protein, are you getting enough carbs? are you getting enough fats? Are you getting enough fibre? Are you getting enough micro nutrients to stave off disease? Are the foods your'e buying enough to keep you satiated so that you don't end up depleting them faster than planned? What different meals or dishes can you prepare by combining your ingredients so you don't get tired of eating the same things over and over? These are all things you're only going to know once you test your stock pile to really see where any holes in your stock pile planning might be.

Can I ask for your opinion? In the 1970s and 1980s, I did a lot of backpacking. A guy at my favorite army surplus, an avid survivalist, had told me that a good, lightweight, survival food was to pack m&ms with peanuts, and Slim Jims because in an emergency, they would supply you with all the necessary nutrients you would need to avoid starvation. Besides being lightweight, they also had an almost indefinite shelf life. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Great tips. I would add one thing that's not a food item but a general eating-related preparedness tip: get experience with short term fasting. For those short term emergency situations, you shouldn't necessarily need any food for the first few days. You can easily survive on just water. But it takes a little practice to get to that place where you can slip into a 1-5 day fast with ease. We're used to many small meals and snacks throughout the day. But that isn't necessary and some say that style of eating could even do harm. So start with intermittent fasting with a conservative fasting window. Then cautiously expand that window. Eventually try one meal a day, but mix it up with regular eating days, and then shoot for a 24-36 hour fasts. Then longer (but of course do your homework first.) Not making health claims (though I am a believer.) Just think it's a good preparedness tool. You shouldn't need snackies for a few days.
