We need more of these types of videos. So much useful info! Undertale came out in 2015 originally and 2018 for Switch. I really doubt they'll release an updated cart at this point, unfortunately. If you care more about playing your games than collecting them on a shelf, the only advice I have is to PLAY your newer games sooner rather than later. Anything after the PS2 is questionable, honestly.

The South Park games are amazing. I mostly play my switch lite so a lot of these games that are meant to be played on a 60 inch screen are really hard to play on a 4inch screen. I’m replaying shining force 2 on the switch now on that genesis combo pack cartridge. That’s my current rpg if that counts

You know, nobody really talks about the whole digital dilemma when it comes to physical copies. I would love to see a buy now before rare series. The people that do them that I’ve seen, never mention anything about having to download additional content or bug fixes.

I am 49 years old and played South Park the fractured but whole and I loved it! So funny and fun to play.

Two notes: The Diablo 3 Eternal collection in other platforms do not include the necromancer character (and other contents) on disc, it's a free update content. So the Switch version, while "requiring" an update, is actually the most complete physical edition. And in the case of Skyrim, I would say that it doesn't matter the platform you play on, it's a buggy game by nature 😅 So I wouldn't be worried by the Switch version in particular. Only, get used to save frecuently and be sure to have 5-10 manual save slots, so you can avoid getting locked by bugs.

I bought it for PS5 back when it first came out, and then the aftermarket price rose to well over $100, so I kinda HAD to sell it... (I also have it on Switch). But now I can buy it back for the original MSRP! 😄

Love the topic for this video! It’s extremely informative and helpful. I do admit that I have a few of the physical games that should be avoided (Bioshock, Outer Worlds, etc) but I’ve already completed them on a console other than the Switch.

Have you heard of the games Gothic 1 and 2? They are not super well known in the US but in some countries in Europe they are viewed as some of the best RPGs of all time. And last year they also got ported to the Switch, around 20 years after they came out on PC. Unfortunately the launch versions were very buggy, so the unpatched physical versions should be avoided but I enjoyed playing through the patched versions of both games. Still some amazing games, although they might be difficult for new players, since they don't really hold your hand as much as modern games.

Was hoping to hear if either of you had an opinion on the baldur's gate 1/2 and Icewind Dale/Planescape Torment releases. Both are great games, but it just feels weird to be paying the prices they now command (especially for BG1/2) for such old games that essentially have not really been updated aside from slightly better graphics and updated controls.

Another good video on collecting. I bought a 2k double cartridge pack with the bioshock collection and borderlands collection a few years ago on a black friday deal. I knew going in that each cart only had one title on it. But the price was super low at $30 for 6 games i couldn't pass on it. I also have the cart for diablo 3 as well. I could be wrong on this but i think the downloaded stuff is just for multi-player season updates, i think the game should be playable for the most part. Also i think skyrim may be mostly playable except for dlc. I'm not entirely sure. Years ago I was without a home internet connection and can't recall if i tried playing skyrim without it or not.

First - click like before watching, because video always guaranteed good!! I didn't even realize some of those games had been ported for Switch. Banner Saga is a fave. I was drawn to it initially because of the Don Bluth/Ralph Bakshi style of animation. Once I figured out the mechanics it became a favorite, and the fact that it does such a good job to incorporate my choices from the previous game into the next one (like Witcher does also) it made it really a cool overarching narrative and journey. It's odd that they require a download (is it a patch or something?), because I don't think they are huge games, even the third one is only around 6 gigabytes in size (at least on PC). Disco Elysium is in my backlog (managed by your spreadsheet 😀) - looking forward to playing that one soon. Glad to see you back and congratulations on getting started with your new job! Now I just have to find one....

That’s an interesting topic, I almost never think of the Western and PC RPGs when I think of Switch collecting. Usually leave that to PlayStation and just giving up on PC with Steam. Hopefully we’ll see some Switch 2 versions that bring some of the more demanding games further along, I’d love that.

This was a great video idea. Disco Elysium Final Cut is such a great game but yeah the performance does have it's issues and after the patch during my playthrough it still crashed more then a few times, so perhaps pick it up elsewhere if the Switch isn't the only option. Another good game is Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning which I was surprised how well it run with how briefly I played it. And though I haven't played the Switch version Torchlight 2 can be a blast with friends and works well as a Single Player experience.

Thanks for the video After watching it I gotta say though that me personally would recommend buying Skyrim, The Witcher 3 and Diablo 3 because they all come with the full game in the cartridge. Yes they do not have the lastest version but you could play the game without any download. One thing to keep an eye out for is the version of Skyrim you are buying, the reprint comes with a patch that affected performance.

Thanks for the detailed video and cautioning us! The proportion of new games available exclusively as digital downloads has risen so sharply throughout the past decade… And with the games mentioned on this video it seems large publishers are also de-prioritizing *proper physical releases for their marquee titles. I wonder if this is an outcome of companies 1) wanting to cut production cost of physical media and its distribution, as well as 2) development teams being given unrealistic deadlines where the game is incomplete and needs to be patched at a later date.

I was expecting an indie direct breakdown, but a two part collaboration was a real surprise, maybe the next collab will be Euro themed? Can't really tell if it's a blood moon or sunset design on your shirt but it looks Gaar-ate, lol.

I had bought Bioshock and sold it before I ever opened it due to the digital download thing-unless it's a game I really like (eg Life is Strange) I really try to avoid physical titles that have large mandatory downloads. Glad to know West of Loathing gets the seal of approval-kicking myself a bit for not picking up when it got the reprint but its been on my radar forever, oh well lol :)

I would highly recommend Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning on the Switch. It runs just as great as it does on any other platform, and though there are glitches inherent from the original game, for the most part, it is a wonderful world to be in and explore. The artwork on the case is also amazing! I actually got the game cheaper physically than I could get it on the eShop. Also, Disco Elysium is one of my favorite games of all-time, but yeah, it launched with a lot of issues on Switch unfortunately. I personally played it on PC.

Great video Emily my recommendation would be dredge. the only physical switch games I stay away from are the ones with just the download code no physical game cartridge I hate those other than that I'm a sucker for the Nintendo switch games physical I don't really care if there's a download got to have that physical

This content is so valuable as a physical collector. When you look at some of the things that have happened recently with the DS online shutdown and the sprint to preserve the Dragon Quest VII DLC, having it all on cartridge is more important to me than ever

At least if you have the physical version of all of these games, you can resell it. Regardless of the download size I always recommend physical for the resale value alone.

Limited Run had a physical version of Star Wars knights of the old republic(not sure if that disqualifies it). definitely one of my favorite games of all-time, and i dont think you have to be into starwars at all to really get into it(though it would help 😅). I believe everything is on the cart? as for the 2nd one, i know that one had some controvery with its port with some promised material not being brought over.

Skyrim on switch is amazing, I just play normal version, I’ve played this game 40 times and never had game breaking bugs

Diablo has a big download on the ps4 also. Switch version even without the download is pretty good imo

Emily you should consider Immortals Fenyx Rising for PS5. It's Assasins Creed Odyssey meets Tears of the Kingdom. It's a super cheap, super overlooked game. Huge open world, amazing gameplay, very witty voice acting.

Disco Elysium: The final cut - Nintendo switch - The JPN cart is only 000 with 1.0.0 version, whereas there are now 003 revision cartridge available for EUR and USA which is 1.0.3 version of the game (still this version require 1.3GB download to update to the latest version which is 1.0.9). Are you saying that even these 003 cartridges (EUR & USA) are not a worthy purchase for the game collectors? Your opinion will be helpful for me to decide.

I actually bought Skyrim as well for the Switch, it was ok. Same with Diablo 3. And BioShock series I actually bought them back in the X360/PS3 days, I bought them on PS4, same with Fractured But Whole, it is interesting to hear about the physical copy differences! Also I bet once the Switch is done as an active console, the homebrew scene should pick up the slack, as there will be versions of those games fully patched(albeit with no online service as, well the whole "no longer in production" thing). Great list and video. Unfortunately, I can't really be all that helpful western RPG suggestions for the Switch as I have confined much of my library to jpgs and the Nintendo franchises. I will admit to likely having put more hours into Skyrim (Xbox and PC) than all of the Trails games I played so far... and Stick of Truth and Fractured but Whole are surprisingly good so check out the Playstation versions if you like South Park.

Who did you choose on your playthrough? Yennifer or Triss? Or neither? For me I had to pick Yen. Every time lol

I'll list a few western developed physical released RPGs. Star Renegades. So first off, I own the PS4 version and in combat, even the PS4 version can have framerate issues. I think it's a CPU issue because the game has the exact same framerate issues on the PS5. So Star Renegades is a turn based RPG, but it's a bit different than the traditional turn based RPG. The developers call it a reactive turn based combat system and It's closer to MS Saga where you see a generic value of what the enemies will be doing. However, with Star Renegades at the start of every turn, you can view exactly what every single enemy will be doing. You'll see the weapon damage, who the enemy is targeting, where the enemies appear on the attack timeline, and the game will even show you how much damage your characters will receive with those actions. This is where the player then chooses their actions. The character class types are attackers, tanks, delayers, support, or a mix of multiple class types and this is where you'll determine whether to try and kill the enemies or delay them before they can take action, defend to reduce the damage, etc. The game uses the mechanics of your usual procedural games, but it's much better balanced than pretty much anything on the market. While reviews state it's a difficult game, the characters they start you off with for your first run are perfect for a normal playthrough and I finished the game on my very first run. There's a starting map where you'll take three turns to move around locations on the map, and then you'll take nine nine turns to move across each main map. During those nine turns you'll camp three times and at the end fight a boss. The fourth main area has you do a few battles then two boss battles. Without fast forwarding your first time might be 10 hours or less. A great and well paced turn based RPG. There's a patch after the physical version released that includes the moon base dungeon and one additional class. The moon base does make it easier to get character's relationship levels maxed out to get the characters easier(which makes for a lot of play throughs, but it's not a major loss this not being on disc. There are 16 other characters and moon base is just a side dungeon. ------ Salt and Sanctuary. If someone didn't know any better they'd say this was that one 2D FromSoftware game with just how like for like it is to the Souls titles. Salt and Sanctuary perfects the Souls formula on a 2D plane while adding in some exceptional platforming mechanics that also has the character grabbing and pulling themselves up onto platforms if they can't quite make the jump. Instead of just choosing the stats you'd like to level as you would in a Souls game, Salt and Sanctuary has a FF10 sphere grid system which starts you off at a point and each level up you get allows you to move one space along the grid and learn that skill. Weapons levels and armor levels are required to be learned to equip the higher level weapons. I'd say the one major issue that damage is skewed towards heavier weapons. You can use magic and any other weapon you want and make your way through the game, but heavy weapons are the most powerful while having decent range for melee weapons. ------- Bug Fables. I was immediately sold on this game after watching Arlo's review. I've watched a few reviews and Arlo's review is the bes and it will immediately sell you on this great game. My one complaint though is that there are only three characters and the game does fall into a little bit of repetitiion in the very end of the game when you find and use the same strategy at that point in the game battle after battle. Throughout the rest of the game it doesn't really have this issue because you don't yet have all of the medals required to get away with using one best strategy so for most of the game it is a great game. --------- Divinity Original Sin 2. When you can't play Baldur's Gate 3, this is next best thing and there's a physical release on the Switch. Unfortunately it's LRG so you'll be paying a lot more than buying it on the PS4 or XBO. This is one of my favorite games on last gen consoles and is the game I've put the most time in than anything on this list(combined.) Divinity Original Sin 2 has an optional honor difficulty that saves your game if anyone dies and deletes your save if everyone does. I've gotten as far as act 4 on this difficulty and have played a lot. Part of the reason why I have 400+ hours.

DD runs amazing on the switch over 300hrs definitely recommend it & definitely a JRPG loving the second one also!, worse experience for me was darksiders 3 (it’s horrid on switch feels like you are playing at 10fps)

*smh* I can't believe that "code in the box" is a thing... what a waste of materials for a game that should just be released on the eShop (or, even better, actually put on a cartridge)! Thankfully, that hasn't happened to me.

I really recommend Risen, a WRPG form the creators of Gothic saga. A very unique, eurojanky, but great RPG experience.
