biohazard724 Hitler's plans to invade were delayed because out of nowhere Mussolini ordered and invasion of Greece and was failing causing Hitler to divert the Germans, most likely costing them the war.
Fun fact: Napoleon also lost in Russia, because the Russian's had the ability to burn everything the french would need for the march (such as crops, ammunition etc.) and even set Moscow ablaze while the french was garrisoned in the city. So funny enough Napoleon's men froze and burned.
You should've mentioned the battle of the crater. During the civil war, union troops detonated a 170 foot long tunnel of explosive barrels under a confederate fort. The union troops charged at the rubble of the fort. They ran into the crater the explosives had created and were now trapped. Union troops trying to exit the crater by climbing were picked off by the remaining confederate soldiers. It was basically a turkey shoot. Every union soldier was killed in the battle of the crater. The confederates ended up winning a battle that the union had 10:1 by a simple mistake.
The Third Reich was already on the retreat by the time the US landed in Normandy, the major reason the Third Reich did declare war on the US was in hope that japan would declare war on the USSR.
Dark Fire franz Ferdinand's drivers wrong turn also started WW2 ok Germany got power in WW1 then the power was lost. Germany wanted all the power back so WW2 ate some poop
After they froze: Russians: Hey Stalin, you know bulldozers right? Let's make our army into a bulldozer for Germany! Stalin: Da that's a good idea, I really like it, so what's the strategy we're going to... Russians: Sir we just took Berlin, Hitler killed himself.
watch "Fall of Constantinople" by Reply History. You will know just because the Byzantines didn't forgot to close the gate that doesn't mean the Turks can't capture the city
During World War 2, the french were so afraid germany were going to invade, they built many defences on their border to stop them from coming through, but then the germans simply went through belgium to get to france and invade, simply going around the french defence as if they were going in a back door. This plan was known as the Schlieffen plan
Except the Schlieffen Plan was from WWI, not WWI... besides, the Schlieffen plan of WWI failed, as they encountered much heavier resistance than expected in the Netherlands. This allowed the French to establish heavy fortifications beofre the Germans could take Paris. The plan was revised following the loss of WWI, and the Germans came up with the plan of invading through the Ardennes
Of course the French and Belgians argued about which way to extend the Marginot line, as Belgium wanted it on their northern border. Due to this debate, it was not ready when the Germans arrived.
+Mr. Duck The Schlieffen plan didn't include an invasion of the Netherlands. Also Mathhias seems to have gotten Belgium and the Netherlands confused...
Brazil RU-vid TV *suddenly remember something while pooping* "Have I closed the gates that leads into the most important city in the entire empire?" "..." "Nah, the Turks won't probably invade the city, killing everyone in the process, so idgaf."
+Humphrey “Embericed” Bergquist no, I'm not. It's annoying. Almost all the time half the comment section it first or where is notification squad at? That is so annoying. The comments should be for thoughts on the video. Giving a COMMENT on the video. Not saying first
1. No WWI could not have been avoided, with rising tensions in Europe, the death of Franz Ferdinand was just used as a scapegoat, with all of the militarism, imperialism, nationalism, and the alliance systems, just one spark would (and did) ignite all of Europe
+MatthewSantoro The thumbnail made me assume you were going to wear a themed costume for this list. Do you plan on start wearing costumes relating to the theme of your video? I think that'd be a fun addition.
Avery Bondeson actually invading Russia isn't that big of a deal as long as you plan ahead of time, have trucks with tracks so they don't get stuck in the mud in the spring and fall, and pack winter gear FFS. Hitler only failed because his supply lines were shit because all of his trucks got stuck in the mud and by time winter rolled around he didn't have the proper supplies delivered because of it. P.S. not a Hitler supporter, just a fan of history.
Troy Nunez that would be any civil war what about ancient Greece Athens and Sparta the Union and the Confederates North and South Korea East and West Berlin any Civil War I mean it's kind of all of those is kind of you know a military mistake if you ask me
Tryhardevil123 Actually he shouldn't have because we have a pretty good world right now, everything happens to keep things in balance, without WW2 you probably wouldn't exist right now.
true, because of wwii we have most of the tech that we have now. (TVs were invented for military use in wwii for tv guided bombs, aka a b 17 being flown by a tv into something
@Richard Kaskiewicz The weirdest thing is that he points out how the city is *named after Constantin*, yet when he speaks the city's name he somehow drops half of it for some unknown reason. Unreal.
Winston Churchill lost a very large part of the British navy in World War 1 and was fired because of it. Basically he was warned that it would happen but he didn’t care
andrew tapia Look up the definition there isn't two ways to pronounce it. Only one. He had a silent T. That T isn't supposed to be silent. I thought it sounded weird the way he said it then I knew why. Here's how it would be spelled the way he said it. Constaniople.
all wars beyond it really because the treaty at the end of ww1 layed the group work for not only ww2 but also screwed up the middle east which we are now having to deal with. and ww2 set up the cold war. so that driver caused the deaths of we're still counting so who knows
Immediately prior to the first battle of Manassas- I think the Yankees call it Bull Run... One of Gen. Robert E Lee's lieutenants, who was an avid cigar smoker, accidentally left behind the exact confederate troop movement plans when he had wrapped those secret plans around three cigars; due to Murphy's Law this package accidentally fell out of his bag, only to be found by one of the Union commander's lieutenants. Most historians agree that due to circumstances the South should have won an easy and decisive victory, but due to the leaked troop movements, it ended in a draw. Loose lips, sink ships.
acrazyjew I believe you made a mistake. I'm pretty sure that was the battle of Antietam (Yankee sorry) and it was a close battle but the north should have won easy because the cigars. You can fact check me and let me know of I was wrong
HuntingTheEnd V. You're right, Hunting, it was indeed at the second battle of Manassas, what you call Antietam. The first battle of Manassas was a surprise southern victory.
actually, second Manassas was a different battle entirely, the Confederacy called Antietam Sharpsburg, and it probably could have been a crushing Union victory for anybody but George McClellan.
first Manassas was a clear victory for the south, Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson was specifically the cause for it. you are thinking of Antietam. 21k died combined, bloodiest single day in American history, and it ended in a technical southern victory, but in reality it was a draw.
The biggest military screw up was when my sister stepped on my plastic soldier toys as I was playing with them, back when we were kids. Didn't end too well for her.
A military blunder I think would fit in well in this list are all the times Admiral Yi Sun-sin was stripped of his rank. Seriously, this man was a naval genius (totally undefeated) but due to politics was demoted several times in his military career. The biggest screw up I feel though occurred when the government accused him of treason because he refused to send his fleet into what appeared to be an obvious trap set up by the Japanese. He was tortured and nearly killed during this time. Meanwhile, Wŏn Kyun was put in charge of Yi's fleet and sadly ended up sailing them into disaster. Of the 150 or so ships that went into the attack against the Japanese naval fleet only 12 came back. So what happened next? Why the king reinstated Yi. And Yi then took those few ships and men that survived and went off to attack the Japanese fleet again. It was 12 V.S. about 133. AND YI WON. Also ALL of the ships stayed afloat. So... yeah... Yi was practically a Naval God yet was demoted several times. Why? How? It's like having the winning card in your hand then discarding it. It's interesting to think how much more he could have accomplished had he kept his rank the entirety of his career.
WWI could not have been avoided, as the nationalist buildup in the Balkans, imperialist tendencies, rising militarization, a the Alliance system that made it so any little thing could have set off any of the countries. It just happens to be that Franz Ferdinand's assassination was the event that set off Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia, causing Russia to also enter the war in defense of Serbia, but also mobilizing in Germany as they were allied with Austria-Hungary. Then Germany declared war on France, invaded through Belgium in the Schlieffen Plan, upsetting Britain who then entered. WWI was going to happen no matter what.
IceVines Actually, there were many ways WW1 could have been avoided. Russia could have not mobilized(which they came very close to doing before tsar Nicholas II's ego kicked in), Serbia could have accepted Austria's ultimatum(which wasn't as bad as you might think), or Germany could have just not gone through with the old and flawed schliffen plan.
Ryan Lim had the archduke not been assassinated, another action of nationalist agitation would have caused the chain reaction. Any little action that threatened a nation would have spiraled out of control.
Byzantium The great I think that all of these actions could have occurred, yet there would still be agitation causing tension. For instance, if Serbia accepted the ultimatum there would still be a great deal of agitation since the black hand wasn't affiliated with the Serbian government or Russia.
"MAN the enemy sure looks, talks, and acts just like us...damn copycats...why are they all yelling "SAME SIDE, ASSHOLES!"? Tch, what heresy! What fools do they take us for?"
To protect their eyesight for them to make accurate shots. And sometimes, kamikaze isn't always direct collision, there are times where kamikaze pilots eject from their seats before impact.
to be fair napoleon attacked a bit before winter but the russians did a scorched earth tactic and evaded the army then the winter hit before he could leave the country
what about the Battle of Karánsebes? The austrian army attacked itself in confusion and killed about 10,000 soldiers and the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II was even pushed off of his own horse into a creek!
Barbarossa wasnt a bad idea since Stalin planned to invade Germany himself in near future. It only was bad planning that cost germany the war. Making Slaves out of Ukraniens instead of befriending them, forgetting Winterclouth, and so many things about Stalingrad.
KevZockt it was a bad idea if they didn't attack the communists they could have took Britain and the rest of Europe (although they already had most of Europe) then they could have had more men and arms and ammunition then they might have had a chance to actually take the soviets so yeh
Stalin trusted the germanys and didn't want to invade, also it would've been nearly impossible to invade russia (with soviet borders) even with all of europe under it's control.
I really enjoy your videos, they're amazing but I have something to say about the "starting" of World War 1. You see, there were crises all around the world and many countries weren't happy with their current state. Pressure was put on everyone and some (like the Austro-Hungarians) were already preparing for war (because they wanted to expend their territories, mostly). So, the point is that the assassination of Ferdinand was just an EXCUSE for starting WWI, NOT THE REASON. As a matter of fact, previous crises could've started it, but the countries weren't ready enough. Thank you for your time. 😊
+lekhaclam87 That doesn't suprise me. Both were dictators that tried to conquer Europe. Both failed in part due to Britain's involvement and failing to conquer Russia. Ironically, Napoleon's actions led to the creation of Germany as a country.
Greetings from the Royal Military College of Canada! Great video overall, but a few things that bothered me: 1. There are little to no historians who say the ultimate cause of WWI was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The sutra-Hungarian Empire was looking for any excuse to invade Serbia and the rest of the Balkans. The true cause of the war is a lot more complex, having more to do with alliances, nationalism, militarism, failed diplomacy and the combination of several other factors. 2. Incorrect. That "gate", was the rear entrance, which the Ottomans only had access to b/c they were able to transport ships to the waters flanking the city, an incredible feat of engineering and logistics. Also, none of this really matters, since the city couldn't possibly have held out for very long, given that it was the last piece of Byzantine territory. 3. Okay, first of all, for both sides, the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was simply a way to buy time before war inevitably broke out. hitler, and all of Germany for that matter, had been planning to invade Russia for well, forever. it was their end game to destroy bolshevism, enslave the slavic peoples and acquire lebensraum (living space). All previous ops and campaigns had been meant to set up Barbarossa. Hitler and the German High Command of course knew about the dangers of the Russian winter, and that's why they put all their efforts into creating a plan they thought would guarantee them victory before winter came. This was a dream at best. Hitler was in fact quite aware of Napoleon's campaigns in 1812, but he believed Napoleon lost b/c he had put too much emphasis on seizing Moscow. This is incorrect, and so is the assumption that the weather did in Napoleon. It was hunger for the most part. Napoleon was used to not having much of a supply line b/c he and his army could normally live off the land they conquered. This was not the case in Russia, as the Russians had used a scorched earth policy to starve Napoleon into retreating. With no food and no clear objectives, Napoleon had no choice but to turn around and go home, or face total defeat.
+Andreas Foerster Your one of those fat dudes who love proving people wrong behind their monitors with no sites or evidence where you found that from. If you did reply and put the links in there.
Lol I gave you two books to read: "Team of Teams" and "The Best Little Army in the World". You can also just look at the wiki of the history of the CAF. Not hard. Look me up on Facebook, you'll see a cadet at RMC. Again, confirming what I've said isn't hard.
Also the German invasion of Belgium in WWI, the British would have stayed neutral and Germany could have won WWI before the British could have turned the tide of the war
Thomas Simard No, this is not really true. Germany needed to move through Belgium to bypass French border fortifications, which made a potential German offensive against the French on the German-French border impossible. The German plan to quickly move through Belgium and strike France in the north almost succeeded, and the Germans would have taken Paris and forced a French capitulation only a few months into the war had it not been for the miracle of the Marne.
Barbarossa was the name of an emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in the 12th century, who was known for his aggresive, expansionistic policies, waging war in Northern Italy, East europe and also joined the third crusade
Great work, as usual! According to the late historian Brigadier SLA Marshall, whose book "World War I" is considered one of the best authorities on the conflict, even though Franz Ferdinand was a nationalist and did not look favorably upon the Slavic peoples that lived within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he was one of the coolest heads within the government. If he had lived, he might have turned Emperor Franz Josef to a path of peace and disrupted the Foreign Minister's designs for a war.
The Germans were delayed and apparently the winter that hit during the invasion was the worst in recent decades. So it was just bad luck as well. Interesting the same happened to Napoleon and Carolus Rex.
It's not by chance. Most classes in America that take world history are on the same topic. Curriculum isn't random. And there are 10 topics, all about a militia, and WW2 was one of the biggest wars.
Mat you forgot to mention The Roman Emperor Caligula once declared war on Neptune, the god of the seas. His men ran to the ocean and stabbed at the water. Caligula then declared victory, and commanded his men to collect seashells as war trophies.
I'm sure it's been put somewhere in the 8000+ comments, but you missed the battle of Myeongnyang. Japan underestimated the remains of Korea's navy and was routed by only 13 ships. The Japanese had around 130 warships and some 200+ others. That became a turning point in that particular invasion that ended in Japan's defeat that time.
In the last battle of the revolution the British commander and most if the army stayed on a peninsula and when the American soldiers found out they were able to flank them on all sides and captured the British leader
Master Therion Master Therion just listen closely, here's a little lesson in history, this is going down in stupidity if you wanna be a hitler number one, you gotta do a truce with Russia just for fun. Just follow my moves and sneak around be careful not to starve the crowds, stop don't feed them!
I think as usual you are missing facts from Asia... There was a time when Mohummad Bin Tughlaq sent 100,000 strong army to conquer invading Mongols... but he sent them across Himalayas... which killed all the soldiers... none reached china... leave reaching mongolia....
A decisive war between Suja-ud-daula (backed by British) and Siraj-ud-dauls (backed by Frech) at the Battle of Plassy in eastern India was decided on which side had "Turpoline"!! The mighty Siraj-ud-daula was defeated even with better canons and guns and army as all his gunpowder got wet after a previous night's rain when british and Suja-ud-daula's tiny canon regiment decimated the mighty army leadng to the first win of East India Company in India. Eventually British took over whole of Indian Subcontinent!!
When a 14 year old king (Akbar) was against a mighty army of Hindu king Hemu, a rogue arrow injured Hemu... His army believing that their king was killed, was routed... Hemu was captured alive, decapitated... Akbar regained and cemented the rein of Mughals in India...
I do not know if you can consider this one military. The Civil War: a messenger did not do his job correctly and if he did it correctly, the confederates could have won.
Yer Da Sells Avon Nice to know but...does it really make a difference?By the way, there was Scottish,Irish and Welsh tanks and planes but the user was mostly England so yeah
+Cave Xplorer They had a pact to get a decent chunk of resources. Germany benefited alot from it. It's just, Hitler wanted more. All I'm saying is, if he wasn't that greedy, things could be pretty different nowadays. +Teddy Bears United Would've, could've, should've, all besides the point. It's Hitler digging his own grave, thinking it would have been easy, at a time he couldn't allow many losses, concentrating troops elsewhere, and stopping the constant flow of resources from Russia. Russia wasn't ready for a war, one of the reason they made the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was to buy them time, even when the pact became 4 fold. Russia did halt it a bit due what was happening in Romania, which created resource problems in Germany. Stalin assumed the war between Germany and the west would be short, not in Germany's favor. But after the Romania thing was settled, Stalin started the whole trade again, and he changed his mind on the duration of the war. He could've easily chosen to go against Germany, as Germany was hurt by the lack of the trade during that period, but he wasn't ready at all for a war with Germany. Afterwards, Stalin sent Molotov to Berlin to negotiate terms to join the Axis, to enjoy the spoils of the pact. But those talks were halted by Hitler, as he wanted to invade Russia in the near future. You can speculate Russia going to war with Axis all you want, but it hardly seemed that such was really on their mind, or for any time soon. Stalin wanted to gain through negotiations with them, not by figuring out how to fight them. If Hitler didn't halt those negotiations, making Russia join the Axis, which would then be Germany-Italy-Japan-Russia, they wouldn't have had any problem against the west and things would be very different today. Again, you can speculate all you want, but you need to keep in mind how things went, and what they were doing (pacts, who they wanted to ally, etc).
Jovan Mitrić actually to be honest because the invasion of Mongols , Russia is what it is today. The Mongols invaded Kieven Russ, which wasn’t really Russia at the time but more of 13 Slavic kingdoms scattered around Eastern Europe. Because the Mongols invaded Kieven Russ , the Slavs formed a huge uprising in what today is known Moscow and overthrown the Mongols which then Formed itself as the Russian empire, and from there the Empire just kept growing.
"John, did you close the gate?" "I'm on lunch, I'll do it later." "It's like telling puppies to jump onto that big Daubermann." "They're coming with guns! They're coming with guns, what do we do?" "See kids, ALWAYS close the door behind you!" Hilarious video! Keep it up, Matthew! :D
Zodiac Cancer But it probably wouldn't have mattered because one British soldier decided to save him instead of kill him, even though he was on the enemy's side. Ohh, I bet that dude regrets everything now though..
1:12 I can just imagine the driver when writing a resume Driver: What's the biggest thing you've done in your life? Driver: I got Franz Ferdinand killed 1 hour later Boss: *reads resume* Boss: You got Franz Ferdinand killed? Driver: Yes Boss: Get the heck out of my office
