At 4:44 is the picture of the Bisbee, AZ open pit copper mine. I recognized it from the road turn off at the pit edge. I also knew it by the local landscape. Since you are going to use the pic I will tell folks about Bisbee. There use to be a forest in the mile high mountains around Bisbee until they cut them all down for housing and mine timbers. In downtown Bisbee, there is a Smithsonian museum which is very cool. Also a Queen mine tour where you get to strap on mine gear and go for a mine car ride. When the mine shut down, the cheap housing and store front became the mecca for an art community. I highly recommend a visit to Bisbee and Tombstone which is just northwest of Bisbee. Another reason I know this pic is because both of my parents are from Bisbee and I have lots of relatives that we visited during the summer as kids. The mountains in the very back is Mexico. Thanks for including the pic.

I can see the Bingham Canyon Mine from my house. It is hard to put into words how massive an operation it is. Visiting it you can look down to the bottom and the enormous mining trucks look like little toys. The scale just defies comprehension. It's visible from the entire city. There used to be a mountain there and now it's just a gargantuan hole surrounded by the tailings piles. It's extremely impressive. As for the landslide, they had been very carefully monitoring the hillside with lasers and seismic instruments for months and were able to make sure the mine was empty when it collapsed. Then they spent 2 years digging it all out and got back to work mining.

Heheh, want a real shocker. At work we normally do a trivia question or fun fact... My turn to ask everyone... So asked... "For the largest known star how long would it take for light to go around it?" UY Scuti is so large if it was where our sun is UY Scuti would extend out to Jupiter, thing about it... Pretty big eh? Given it take 8 minutes currently for light to get from the sun to us.... Okay so how long would it take light to go around it...? It would take almost eight hours or 7.7 from what i've read. Like another mind blower...? How much hydrogen is burned off our sun in 1 second...? Ah you say 456 Million tons, or 456,000,000,000 * 2,000 or 912,000,000,000,000 pounds of hydrogen per second... UY Scuti: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UY_Scuti The sun: www2.nau.edu/~gaud/bio301/content/sun/sun.htm Enjoy.
@mycroft16
@mycroft16 Год назад
@@dand4485 I'm actually an astrophysicist by schooling. :D Fun fact, UY Scuti is not actually the largest star any more. More accurate measurements actually put it smaller than Betelgeuse and nearly the size of Antares at only 755 solar radii. It was previously thought to be 1,708. However... Stephenson 2-18 has a radius of 2,150 solar radii. Dwarfing even pre-accurate UY Scuti. It's larger than the orbit of Saturn.
@dand4485
@dand4485 Год назад
@@mycroft16 Haha inquiring minds want to know. The size of these just mind boggling, while double checking the issue with Stephenson 2-18 is whether it is a single start or a star cluster... From what i read might be one of the stars in Stephenson's are might be larger then UY Scuti itself at 2000 radii, so hard to say exactly which one is largest it or UY Scuti.

I used to live in West Jordan, Utah. On some weekends my best friend and I would pile our kids into my truck and we'd drive up the back side canyon just south of the mine. It's the highest point and the view from there is amazing! Sometimes we'd camp near there other times we'd drive into Tooele and get ice cream before driving back home to West Jordan. That particular canyon is closed during winter.

I was fast forwarding to see if Kennecott was on list... Yep #1! They have a train that makes its way out of the hole and it takes an entire day so I've heard. Kind of a detail that could have been said. Nobody calls it the Bingham we all call it Kennecott. Just saying
@rite2bcreative
@rite2bcreative 2 месяца назад
Not a passenger train though, right? Just the rail road that wraps around the canyon? I didn't know it went all the way to pit, that's pretty cool. I've actually done some contracting work for Kennecott and one of the jobs was to put gas detectors along that rail road at the refinery and smelter. As it turns out, ammonia gets transported along that way and if one of those cars derails, it would have the most devastating impact out of any other risk there. Everyone was against the project because there were many other things they wanted to use the budget on and felt like the event would never happen, but while we were working on it, that exact train actually derailed at another location on the same track 😬

It's quite obvious that since that was a helicopter full of that companies' geologists they were searching for minerals. Had prob bribed some local official and when they found a motherlode it made it a major incident. Major companies now have huge legal departments to draw up contracts with governments all over the world to stop these kind of pissing contests in advance.
