I enjoyed the book! Especially grateful for the aviation disaster stats bc I was going through a particular hard time of anxiety before my vacation back then; I also like how they reiterate that smth is better doesn't mean that they're no longer bad, which is a great thing to bear in mind when it comes to humanitarian or other issues that are worth and still demand concerted efforts

If someone is interested in Self Help Book i highly recommend: "University of Success" by Og Mandino. i just enjoy reading it because of the narrative and some short story that the author use to describe and explain things in life. the writing style is also fantastic. I'm not that much into self help books, but this book is different.

Just if anyone’s curious.. I believe 10,000 hours is approximately 416 days. Meaning these Outliers spend a whole ass year, one month, and two weeks becoming perfect.

Thats if you spent every minute of every day without stopping to eat or sleep. Realistically, you would spend around 2 hours a day. Thats 5,000 days to complete 10,000 hours. 5,000 days is almost 14 years !!!!
@daniellesongano9636
@daniellesongano9636 3 года назад
I agree with Apollo. The 10,000 hour practice is not done every hour of the day. Realistically, this would take about 10 years. Malcolm Gladwell cited examples. He said that violinists would spend 4 to 6 hours a day practicing and in about 10 years, they would master their craft as they have practiced it for 10,000 hours. So did Bill Joy and Bill Gates. The Beatles also reached the 10,000 mark approximately during their 7th year, only because they performed and practiced in Hamburg for 270 days, 8 hrs a day. So no, the 10,000 hours cannot be realistically done in a year.

Honestly I've dealt with this too. But I found that just finding a little time to carve out during the day is so helpful. Recently, I've been reading during my lunch break. It takes me longer to finish a book, but it's also helped me get back into reading. Making the smallest amount of time for yourself is super helpful!
@purplebuddietia

I think many people manage to read so many books because they make sure to make reading a daily part of their lives or at least a major part of their weeks? Like I’ve heard again in again that always carrying a book with you allows you to pull it out and read during times of you day when you aren’t doing anything. For example, when you’re on the train or if you’re in school waiting for a class to begin, or during your lunch break. Also, a big one that I’ve seen is that people who manage to read a lot of books listen to a lot of audiobooks because it allows you to multi task. So, when you’re cleaning or walking around or cooking you can read. For your last question due to what I studied in university It became natural for me to want to annotate some of my books. To do this, I just am more of an engaged reader and I am actively thinking of what is happening instead of quickly trying to get through the book. Along the margins you can write little notes about what you find interesting or funny or something you’re analyzing about the characters or situation. Also, you can underline quotes that you find you want to remember or that stick with you or seem important to you. One thing that you need to be careful of is writing too much and distracting from actually reading. Read the book and only underline or write notes when you REALLY feel like you should or else the whole page will be filled with tons of notes and underlined sentences and it’s distracting when you look back over the book. Also, sometimes I’ll just put a little dash or Star next to something interesting in the margin instead of underlining so it doesn’t get too messy on the pages. I hope this helps!

The moment I got my Kindle three years back, I've been an avid reader. I think it's because it's so lightweight and comfortable to read on. I also take it with me everywhere. I especially read a lot on the plane when I travel and before I bed I squeeze in at least 20 minutes a night. On the Kindle, there's a feature were you can highlight passages. This year I'm highlighting and then writing it down in a notebook.

@dokidoki719
@dokidoki719 4 года назад
I am half Indian, and India is in Asia but I am also half white and her memoir is very important and was needed but her childhood and even her life prior and after her assault was something only a very privileged person can experience. I didn’t find it to be the norm of Asian American experience. Maybe only the select few but not everyone. Even then the book I loved.
@CuteJcruz19
@CuteJcruz19 4 года назад
E L I totally agree and I think Chanel writes a little bit about her privilege but her insecurities being asian and the ways that her mom would try and console her rang universally imo
@dokidoki719
@dokidoki719 4 года назад
Nicole Yes, I agree I never felt that she was trying to brag about her life. But when she went to study in a different place so that she didn’t have to face people who knew about her assault I found it was not something that everyone could do. I left a tenure track job because I was sexually assaulted but I didn’t have the money to reinvent myself or goggle a river to grow and cry beside it with the wind blowing in my hair. Had to stay in the university town working a public job where I would have to meet my students. I found that part to be a little gimmicky. Maybe she had to find a coping mechanism and of course it worked for her. But many people especially because teens are reading it think this is the definitive experience of rape, it is often not. Her suffering was immense but her wealth, supportive family, and her nationality protected her from other extremely harmful consequences. Like take me for example, I am half Indian who was assaulted by a white man, I didn’t die but the man who did this escaped unscathed because of his race and class privileges. But I also wasn’t burned or killed off like so many of thr victims in India, my class and citizenship protected me from those consequences and my family didn’t think it shameful when I took legal step. You get what I mean, these things are a result of intersections of many social structures. Chanel knows this and she wasn’t being obtuse but people reading her book don’t get it. Sorry for this long comment I absolutely agree with you.

This is so random but 10000 hours is equivalent to around 417 days! Anyway lol, I am binge-watching all of your book recommendation videos and I love them so much! I'm absolutely obsessed with your choice in words and the way you explain these books. I can just tell how much you love these books by the way your voice sounds and the look on your face. I am pretty young but also on the more mature side so your videos are perfect for me. One day I wish to grow my love for books as much as you :)

I really recommend An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green (who is John Green's brother)!!! It's a science fiction book who explores Internet fame and the impact of social media with an addictive plot including strange robot statues suddenly appearing all around Earth. It's just amazing.

Read City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert! It has that old 1940 New York theatre glamour that you mentioned you loved from 7 husbands of Evelyn Hugo

‘Never split the difference’ is a great book I read in 2019 twice. It’s a book written by a man who previously worked for the FBI and teaches you the basic skills for negotiation, which helped him convince hostage takers to not murder/return hostages.
