As a NASCAR fan in addition to Indycar, Kenny Brack's wreck from 2003 at 12:08 reminds me a lot of the wreck Geoff Bodine had in the Truck Series 3 years earlier at Daytona in terms of the car or in this case truck being completely destroyed. Regarding Sato's incident at Pocono, his onboard camera later showed that he kept his line and never went off of it. Rather it was Ryan Hunter-Rey who drove up from inside, hitting Rossi in the middle who in turn ended up hitting Sato who was on the outside. Dario Franchitti was the first one, even before Sato's onboard camera footage was shown, to come out and said Sato wasn't at fault, and he was right. Too bad none of the commentators never apologized to Sato for automatically deciding him as the cause of the accident and strongly criticizing him for being reckless. This was particularly true with Paul Tracy who never seems to have kind words for the Japanese driver. We all know Sato and his kamikaze driving style, which makes him both dangerous and exciting at the same time, and he's been criticized in the past for it. With that said, this kind of unprofessional rush judgements are unfair to Sato and only hurt his reputation more than he deserves. Give the man a little more respect. After all, he is the two-time Indy 500 champion.
Год назад
I've didn't watched that race, just watched this video, and I was pretty sure that wasn't Sato that made the move. After watched that again, but using the slow-mo RU-vid config, you can see the input of the middle driver on the steering wheel, but that was because of the inner pilot moving up (probably he was unaware that was a third pilot, and forced/pressed the middle to get up, because of the turn ahead).
@neogenmatrix6162
@neogenmatrix6162 Год назад
notice how the middle driver never moved away from the inner driver. Satos fault. Also they were already moving tward the outside when Sato decided to make his outside dart.

I heard a lot of Sato in this video. Just saying.
@randalskinner1194
@randalskinner1194 Год назад
Its Sato’s “kamikaze style of driving” that created this incident in the first place. Three wide into a turn that can only hold two and we haven’t even completed one lap…??? A good racer exercises patience and avoids putting himself in precarious situations in the first place. I was never a fan of this kind of all or nothing driving style and the pile of “wadded up” Indy cars Sato has accumulated speaks for itself. Patience is a virtue. Ask 4 time Indy 500 winners such as Rick Mears. You need to know when to “whoo” and when to go and you don’t do that with your foot, you do that with your head.🏁
@danielhenderson8316
@danielhenderson8316 Год назад
@@jackburton7062And for good reason. For most of his career he was an uncontrolled missile. However, for Pocono, it really wasn't his fault as Rossi and Hunter-Reay squeezed him while on the straight with Sato pointing the same direction the entire straight. It's also one of the many reasons I love how Rossi's career has imploded as he's wrecked his fair share of people.

Worst Indy crash: Gordon Smiley, 1982. Comment by Dr Steve Olvey, who attended to Smiley on the track: _"During an attempt to qualify for the Indy 500, Gordon Smiley, a cocky young driver from Texas, was determined to break 200mph or die trying. Several veteran drivers ... had warned him that he was in way over his head, driving all wrong for the Speedway. Smiley was a road racer and was used to counter-steering his car to avoid a crash if the rear wheels broke traction. While rushing to the car, I noticed small splotches of a peculiar gray substance marking a trail on the asphalt leading up to the driver. When I reached the car, I was shocked to see that Smiley's helmet was gone, along with the top of his skull. He had essentially been scalped by the debris fence. The material on the race track was most of his brain. His helmet, due to massive centrifugal force, was literally pulled from his head on impact ... I rode to the care center with the body. On the way in I performed a cursory examination and realized that nearly every bone in his body was shattered. He had a gaping wound in his side that looked as if he had been attacked by a large shark. I had never seen such trauma."_

@@imetzl9340 No, they effectively have a HALO system. It's the same concept, thick bars encapsulating the drivers head, the only difference is Indy runs a windshield. Behold: Dallara Space Planes Incorporated! The way Dallara makes cars that are capable of taking off, catching air, and flying like a frisbee, spinning in air... never saw a Lola or Reynard do that. Hmm... Like, they'd get up, but they always wanted to come right back down, like Servia in this clip. That car didn't want to spend any mroe time in the air than it had to. Also, Dallara STILL HAS NOT put in an anti-intrusion rod to the front wishbones. Decades-old, low-tech safety feature from CART that prevents a single piece of suspension from penetrating the driver like what happened to Hinchcliffe... they still haven't added it to the Dallaras. Speaking of Servia, he was pretty dang vocal about the lack of that rod after the Hinchcliffe accident. Dallara does 90 out of 100 things right. It's just frustrating because that extra 10 could kill someone still, and you can see it coming.

I think the worst 3 crashes are Gordon Smiley, Russell Phillips, and Tony Renna. In all 3 cases, their bodies got torn into many many pieces and scattered all over the racing facility. In Russell's crash, his hand was found in the catch fence, his head (in his helmet) rolled and rolled and rolled way down pit road, and his bowels got entangled in the grill-work of another race car and that car made several laps with all of Russell's intestines splattered and tangled all over the grill as people fainted left and right in the audience. It took a team of 19 catastrophe workers over 45 minutes with surgical gloves to locate and collect all the pieces of Russell's body that had gotten smashes and dragged around the racetrack by various cars.
