Its all about inches. Just like Jerry Nadeau he hit the wall just perfectly and thats all it takes. Michael mcdowell was probably the craziest one. How he came out unharmed was amazing. But if he hadnt hit at the angle he did...same thing with Bobby Allison at Talladega. Had he not clipped the wall before he hit the catch fence it wouldve probably killed 100 spectators
End of an iconic chassis, for me anyway. Sure wish a mainstream kit manufacturer would produce a plastic injection molded kit of these cars in 1/20 or 1/24 scale. Maybe there is some hope now that Salvinos J R has an IndyCar license and is making a new DW-12 kit, a man can dream of an IR-03/IR-04/IR-05 kit...
Eddie Lawson (Galles Racing Delco-Remy car that slowed as it approached the end of the corner) would retire immediately after this. Reportedly he was traumatized when he approached it and call it a career
1993 was the first year CART had a pit speed limit, and yeah it was 100mph. USAC, always more willing to copy from NASCAR, had introduced one at Indy for 1992, which I believe was also the first year USAC implemented closed pits when a yellow comes out. CART didn’t start closing the pits until 1997 or so, and it kind of took a lot of the fun out of pit strategy.
Fernandez might honestly have one of the most uncanny careers in American open wheel racing history. Winning his first race under the shadow of Jeff Krosnoff's death, then another win after Moore's fatal crash, and the 1998 US 500 spectator deaths. Not to even mention his direct role in the 1996 US 500 debacle and going so fast around TMS that they cancelled the entire event. Him having so much direct involvement in some of the saddest and controversial moments in CART/IndyCar history is very unusual.
Watched the first 100-110laps live before switching off, convinced there would be a fatality. I just wasn't willing to see another death, especially with how predictable it would be due to the craziness of the racing. To say I was surprised to hear that nothing too bad had happened would be an understatement...
Funny how your memory can play tricks on you. I've always remembered that start crash happening on TV Indy race, not Michigan. Only today have I realised I remembered that wrong for 28 years 😅😂
Seriously a totally classy guy. Good video. Saw him at the Spring Training in 2001 with his tall supermodel wife who towered over him and said to myself, "That's a confident MF..." Big fan
Excellent video. I was at the Molson Indy Toronto in 1996. The accident happened going into turn 3 and I believe I was watching from around turn 6 or 7. Only saw the accident on replay on the video boards around the track. Knew it was bad enough to red flag the race with all the debris, but we had no idea Krosnoff had died until hours later when we were back home. It would be a different thing today, you would know right away, but in 96 most of us didn't have a cell phone, and there was certainly no Twitter. Was glad we didn't know at the time.
Yeah me as well, I remember hearing about it on the radio on the drive home. Shook me hard, still to this day I feel it, when July comes around, and I walk past the commemorative plaque at turn 3
dan wheldon and greg moore kind had the same last year of their life there first race of the year they won and obviously there last was of the year ended their lives
I was at that Race in Gold Coast because my Company was the sponser (Lexmark). I got Mario to sign my hat before the race and everybody laughed at me....and then he WON
Dude needs 3 to 4 buisness years to upload a video. Bro in that time i could died. But well done tho but only a little bit because you take months to upload a video dude. Like its kinda sad because you are an goated indy creater but everytime it feels like a year passed untill we get goated content again😤😭
Damn Jason, I'm sorry brother. Life has been busy for me lately but I'm going to do my best to get more done lol. I really appreciate you looking forward to my videos I got a ton of video ideas just waiting to be completed.
Me too when I was young 9-10 I loved the car livery (didnt knew the drivers ) maybe thats why I became a fan… like Fan of Jordan because I liked the Jordan livery on GP2 the best XD
Hearing about the drivers not being informed of the severity of Greg Moore’s crash until after the race reminds me of the 1991 Budweiser at the Glen in which JD McDuffie was killed in a crash on only lap 6. While the announcement was made when the red flag was lifted, the race continued and I wouldn’t be surprised if the drivers weren’t informed about what happened until after the race. Greg’s accident even made the local morning news the following day, as he was a former winner of my home Indycar race, the Detroit Grand Prix. That’s how I even knew that the accident happened.
I watched every one of these events happen in real time on ABC Indy coverage. I never really thought about it back them, how three tragic incidents all centered around one driver and two of them being wins for him. Very strange.
I still well up when I see tributes to Greg. He was a hero to me as a Canadian kid who loved racing, especially CART. Thanks for the inspiration Greg, you were taken too soon.
I met him multiple times as a kid in the 90s. He was always kind and gracious. And I was with my dad seated in turn 1 at Michigan in 1998. We didn’t know how devastating that crash was until we got to the car and heard about it on the radio. 💔
I had the opportunity to travel from Mexico to the California Speedway for the Marlboro 500 - 1999 race. They announced in the PA System that Greg Moore passed away little before the race was over. We saw Greg Moore pass 14 cars on the outside the first 8 or 9 laps, he was driving like a madman because he started 28th. He was 14th at the time of the accident. Very likely lost control of the car when the track started to get dirty on the early marbles of the race. I was 15 yo and it was horrible. But at the same time Adrian won and we saw it. My dad and I did not know how to feel. Thanks for this very good video. Been following CART and Indycar since 1996.
