We discuss 10 cheap, low-budget items that are absolutely worth their money.
00:00 Introduction
00:11 1. Saint Hilaire Blanquette De Limoux. It costs about $12-$15. I know it is a mouthful but bear with me. Remember when we shot the video on Is it worth it, Dom Perignon champagne? It was basically a $150 champagne bottle and you can watch the details here. In the comment, a viewer shared with us his favorite budget alternative which is the Saint Hilaire Blanquette De Limoux from France and so I tried it and it's a really amazing sparkling wine that tastes pretty much like a champagne but it only costs $12-$15.
01:34 2. Bar soap. Most people use shower gels today which is also cheap, it is basically just soap with water and so the cost per use is much higher with bar soap. A regular bar of soap will cost you anywhere between $2-$3 and maybe $20-$25 but even the lower-priced models are oftentimes very good in quality, they have good fats like cocoa butter and shea butter and so I suggest you take a look at ingredients first.
02:21 3. Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen. It costs about $15. With the Pilot Metropolitan, you get a quality made in Japan pen that is very balanced, with nice ink flow and a nice nib in its price range, and it won't break the bank and anyone can afford it.
03:17 4. Quality scissors such as these Kai N5210. In my experience, a good pair of scissors is highly underrated. Personally, I get lots of packages when I design things, I have to cut fabrics and leather and so a good pair of scissors is always on my desk. In the past, I would use those scotch titanium blades which you can get in three packs for five or six dollars at Costco and they did the job, but once I had the Kai N5210, it was all different.
04:04 5. Shoelaces because they're very inexpensive but it can really change the entire look of your shoe. As you know, buying new shoes, especially quality shoes, is very expensive, so if a new pair of shoes is not on a table for you right now, consider shoelaces.
04:56 6. Knife from Rada. It's a serrated knife and I bought it three years ago at an antique show in Brimfield. At first, it seemed too cheap, it was a new knife for just five dollars, made in the USA, and I figured how good can it really be? Because I was used to Japanese knives and German Wusthof knives, after using it for a little bit, turns out it's a really excellent knife.
05:53 7. Tailor's ham. It cost about twelve bucks and it's a little pillow filled with sawdust. It's much stiffer than a regular pillow that you may have on your couch, on your bed, and it's used to iron trousers or jackets, especially all the round parts which wouldn't quite work on a flat iron table.
06:41 8. Nivea sensitive shave balm. I tested over 300 products and one item that I come back to over and over again is the Nivea sensitive shaving balm, it costs between 5 and 8 bucks, it's widely available in drugstores all over the world, as well as online on places like Amazon.
07:16 9. Red boat fish sauce. It has this characteristic umami flavor which you can also find in meat, tomatoes, mushrooms, and many other parts. It's that fifth sense of taste that we, in the Western world, are not so familiar with but it's very prevalent in places like Japan.
08:33 10. Gentleman's Gazette eBooks. Right now, we're giving away three of them for free. I mean, what's better than free right? So it's over 200 pages of in-depth content about classic men's style such as black tie guides, white tie guides, or how to wear and combine shoes with socks and pants. Head over to our shop now, add it to your cart, and of course, if you want to buy something else we're honored, but you don't have to.

I grew up with NO money and only ever wore nicer attire for military formal dining, weddings and funerals. It is really appreciated for Gentlemen's Gazette to provide this guidance on classy attire. I know that some products are favored, understood. But I have had to be the definition of utilitarian, the knowledge is welcome. Thank you Sven.

Amazing you mentioned St. Hiliare. My father in law imported it into the US for decades. It is amazing! We use to talk about the price, and that he needed to push to have it marketed on a national level. It is France's oldest sparkling wine, and Thomas Jefferson had it in his wine cellar. That image of St. Hiliare brought back a lot of memories. Thank you.

Absolutely! They are also quite stylish and much less threatening than your usual EDC knives. I carry mine even in my suit pocket. I would advise against carbon if you aim to use it as a snack knife since it catches rust quite easily. The easiest thing to do is to buy your clothes at Brooks Brothers - you will never look bad. Thirty-nine years ago, the day before my wedding, I needed to have some emergency tailoring done. The Brooks Brothers tailor had missed altering one side seam on the beautiful black hairline striped suit I bought for the special occasion. I took it to my local tailor, a true Old World craftsman of the highest skill. When I handed the jacket to him, he inspected it very closely, repeatedly asking me in his thick accent, "How much did you pay for this?" He found it hard to believe that such a quality garment could be sold at such a fair price. As I said, go to Brooks Brothers.

Raphael, yesterday I was going to go to go to the dentist and run some errands and before I left for the appointment, I began watching this video and I saw your recommendation for the Nivea Sensitive Skin Aftershave. When I went to the grocery store afterward, I made a point to pick it up and I used it this morning. I can honestly say that it was greatly superior to the aftershave I used before, and I am very satisfied with it. I'm going to use this rather than my old one. Thanks Raphael and keep up the good work!

Can't agree more about the Nivea post shave Balm. Had terribly sensitive skin as a young teen but was required to be clean shaven for school and so after trying almost everything at my pharmacy, I was bought this as a gift and it was amazing. Has a cooling effect after shaving and is non-greasy. Smells great and leaves my skin feeling normal instead if that sensitive post shave feeling.

They just bumped up the price of the product, however, so you might have to hunt around to find it available at $15. I took about a month to shave (I've been a beard man for the last 15 years and decided to grow it back), but I decided to go with the Nivea sensitive after shave balm and it was fantastic. For the entire time I had my beard I would just dry shave my neck and the edge of the beard and then leave it without any kind of skin or beard care but I'm going to stick with wet shaving those parts and using the after shave balm, and keeping the beard groomed and fresh with some beard oil/balm. Cheap but good! I love this kind of thing! Another affordable, really good, gentleman's item: Buck 503 Prince. This is the perfect sized pocket knife: as small as possible but large enough; lock blade; stainless; easy to sharpen; tough; thin in the pocket; pleasing to the eye. Still made in the U.S. My parents gave me my first 503 when I was a kid in the 1970s, I lost it. In the 1980s, as a young adult, I bought a new 503 because no other pocket knife I'd owned was quite as good. I've carried it ever since. My first one had a wood inlay in the handle. My current one from the 80s has a fiber composite handle inlay, but I see they're back to using real wood when I view their website.

Loved it! I have been using the PILOT V5/7 series for 20 years! So I am a loyal fan. I have been wanting to try an upgrade to a fountain so I am very pleased to hear that you have recommended one. Cheers!

bar of soap last entire family for 6 months? Is this a typo? Even 6 weeks seems fantastic for a whole family, let alone 6 months.

Soft milled, cheaply made soaps will melt away in a very short time. Hard milled soaps, which are sometimes more expensive can last a very long time.

Am I the only one who finds it strange that a whole family would share a bar of soap?!

As far as pens go, I bought my Lamy Safari fountain for just over $20. It's got a Bauhaus design and works like a charm.

I don't know if it's available where you live, but an excellent (and usually cheaper) alternative to champagne is the Italian Prosecco. Apart from some cases, bottles are affordable and high in quality.

Really enjoying your videos! Really informative. Can you do maybe a video on boots? As a guy that wears his clothes hard I've found that nice heritage boots are a must for me. Sometimes you got to put your smart clothes in the closet! What are your thoughts on boots and denim?

Here in the California wine country (Napa) we have a brand called "Two Buck Chuck" which is excess high quality wine which has been rebottled. This helps limit the supply of the "high quality" wine without dumping the excess. At wine tastings here in the valley sommeliers will often set up tastings where Two Buck Chuck is pitted against well known wines. Once the joke is revealed they will make comments about people who taste the price tag rather than the wine.
