It's because of the fit of the jacket, and the fact that he is well groomed, not overweight, so it doesn't look like he gave up on being and looking healthy. But regardless, he's not going to be able to pull off successfully an outfit with red vans, ripped jeans and an oversize Supreme t shirt like those 21years old kids.
I mean, that's exactly right. Just because you're confident in it doesn't mean it looks good. But if you're not confident in it, there are other alternatives that still look good.
His denim jacket doesn't have that effect overdone as the ones of the pants of the example. Also he doesn't look like he is 50, so it doesn't look that off....but yeah, he could have been wearing a solid color jacket 🤷♂️
@@MiMenteOnLine If she meant that a subtle fade is ok, then she should have SAID it! Otherwise she's just a fool. Plus her take on leather is idiotic. Honestly her "do's are fine, but a LOT of her "don'ts" are BS. Frankly her so called "style" is bland. I won't deny that everything she recommends IS well put together. But you won't stand out dressing her way, you'll blend in. Faded into the background. Maybe that's what some people want. But not me. Sure, she claims that she advises famous people. But I'm betting that even if she does, not ONE of her clients is considered particularly "stylish". Well dressed maybe, but not stylish. And there is a ocean of difference between the two.
Leather jackets, really. I mean seriously that guy with the leather jacket looks older yet looks so great and badass. Sorry but I believe there is not a proper age for leather jacket. I own 7 leather jackets and I don’t think I will ever give up on wearing them.
I guarantee there is someone out there who is breaking all these “style tips” but is *still* probably happier than someone breaking their back to conform to this
@@KarlSnarks Eh, I'd argue the overwhelming majority of these are legit points, and while YOU may think a person looks "stylish" doing it, any person with a more refined taste will see it as off-putting.
@@soccermovie6490 The mighty fashion gods, who have the high ground of fashion because they wear such outstanding clothes, not at all basic and uninteresting garments.
Screw that! I'm late 50's and will wear backward baseball caps. distressed jeans, biker jackets, whatever I like. If I feel good and look good, I'm good!
Idk why you two insist on hating on 40something year old men in a leather jacket. Lol I'm wearing mine occasionally and it looks damn good with chinos or dark wash jeans.
I agree It timeless piece that can be worn through all generations ages genders you can be 70 Wearing a leather jacket telling your grand kids about the good times or 18 sneaking your first kiss at prom in high school
"Wear it with confidence" should've been the last thing y'all drove home. You can break any and every one of these rules if you wear it like a boss. Shit, I've seen people wear bungie cords as necklaces that gave life to their style.
Plain tshirt, jeans, solid color shoes. That is all I ever wear because I am married and don't give even a fart what I look like anymore. Nothing is more liberating than no longer caring if women fine me attractive or not. I don't even waste my thoughts on it.
@@janpierzchala2004 not really because what looks "good" is subjective. I think comfort looks good. A comfortable looking person seems approachable and relatable to me. Also I think that much of what many call " style" just looks fake to me. It's all egocentric and meaningless. Besides, if you really look good, you always look good, without even one ounce of effort.
A simple very well made brown leather jacket looks good at any age. Come home, take off the blazer and tie, put your leather jacket on and go to a bar to watch a game. It is that easy.
For ppl with absurdly long laces, sure. Get the stretchy Straight laces. But let’s not be obsessive. Laces are a functional part of shoes. So what if the loops are visible. It’s a shoe.....you “tie” them. I think this is preference. I will agree the aesthetic is definitely clean but it’ll this sounds more trendy than need to know
Ehhh, I've ALWAYS been irritated at the look of laces showing on my Cole Haans, or heck even on my casual shoes.. For years I've tucked laces in, but they come out from walking. These are awesome. Too bad the brown is sold out. Found some other brand on Amazon though
I'm a bigger guy in college & I love to wear Chelsea boots because of how comfortable they are since I can wear them all day with jeans. If you wear original straight jeans while being a bigger guy I think you can pull it off depending on your shoe size & fit whether or not it's a regular or wide fit. Idk if I fully agree with what they said about that because I'm sure there's workarounds for that. It is such BS to say that because you're a certain body type you can't wear a certain boot type which is so popular & looks so stylish. They're supposed to look so stylish with any body type & pretty much any outfit too. They have a elegant design to them
I agree with you. I think for these people, showing more upper on the chelsea boot is essential, thus the tapered pant leg. If you are not worried about that, standard pants will do just fine. The problem with some style advice on youtube, is sometimes they are overemphasizing style concepts in order to have video content. This channel is famous for that! But I bet even they would agree, if you like your look, and you feel good in your clothes, then the "rules" don't apply to you.
I think the point of Ashley & Dorian saying chelsea boots must be worn with slim tapered trousers is because they show off the whole shoes from top to bottom. I think that gives it the trendy vibe. Obviously wearing looser trousers with chelseas can be done but it will just hide the top part which in essence just hides the "boot-ness" of the shoes. I am a heavier guy, thus slim or skinny pants didn't look good on me and the realization stopped me from making the mistake.
Just rock the look you like.. It's about how you feel and what you enjoy - not meeting others' ideals. Especially from videos with two squeaky dorks - with the fella dressed like a vegan Sunday School teacher in denim.
Sorry but I call bs on all of this 1950's era rules. The most important style tip as we get older is getting the proper fit and cut. Dress your body. Not your age.
... yes, ok so far, but a cool leatherjacket... come on. If you' re cool, you definitely can wear it. You also can go too far, by dressing "your age".. and end with boring "average style". Knowing the rules and then experiment with it....
I agree with all of this. I also think it's a little ironic when women (in general) tell men to go super minimalist on accessories, etc, but then rock way too much makeup, do too much with eye lashes and eye brows, layer the accessories like they bought out Macy's in a single day, etc.
Here’s words of advice for you guys. Don’t try to dress your age bc clothing has no gender and no age. Wear what you want bc then that’s style. Dressing your age means you’re no longer stylish bc now you’re just copying.
I take all of your advice other than fragrance advice. Being a frag head myself, it’s not as simple as you guys always say. Having said that, the heavy spray guys are a bit much.
Chris Richards I don’t know much about fragrance but what you say makes sense. You can’t have a set rule on how much fragrance to apply if they are all different.
Nothing wrong if you are wearing biker jackets even if you are 70 years old 😁 and also ripped jeans 👖 but this style doesn’t fit anyone it’s all about your personality and how you can rock this outfit 😎 but also you need to have all basic things first 👊🏼☝🏻 enjoy fashion and life 🕺
Yeah, like most of these rules (except the "wear with confidence") this rule has so many exceptions it hurts. Just think of how awesome dr.Martin boots look when they're worn in. Also, basically any skate shoe/sneaker looks better if they're slightly worn in.
9:50 Read the tip and then look at the jacket he is wearing. Also, leather (real leather) jackets are expensive it makes more sense that an older man would be in a better financial position to purchase one.
I'm not sure that hiding your laces is a classic timeless look. I think that's more of a thing for sneakers and casual shoes. A nice knot on your oxfords looks great and elegant. I think this was made up for the advertisement in the video.
Leather bomber jackets are a classic that looks good at any age. Looks a hella lot better than that sketchy jean jacket you're wearing with your undershirt showing above your outer shirt.
Less is more. But more is also more! :D as Tom Ford Said "if you have a scent that you love, why not be generous with it, why smell a little bit good when you can smell great!" XD I get what you guys are saying though :)
Tuck in your shoelaces? Or, get those ridiculous stowaway laces? Uuuhh... NO!!! You must be kidding me... Not in this lifetime or the next... Usually, I get a lot out of this channel, but not in this instance. Sorry, but those stowaway shoelaces, or whatever you call them, look ridiculous. There is NOTHING wrong with shoelace bunny ears.
Now that y'all have gone through "the basics" "tips and tricks" and "what not to do" as a baseline for getting into clothing (which are all amazing btw!) Can we see some of the more advanced style choices you'd make?
They need to stop w all these rules. These rules limit your style and your overall happiness. Unless your true love is actually fitted clothing, then this video isn’t for you or me
Fashion should be about self expression. Life would be boring if we were all just a bunch of Dorian clones. In saying that I think you would look cooler if you cut off the sleeves of your denim jacket, sewed a few patches on here and there, changed your t-shirt to a black one and messed up your hair a bit so you looked a little less like a Ken doll.
I clicked on your thumbnail because, coined with the title, I thought to myself "I DEFINITELY DON'T WANT TO LOOK LIKE THIS GUY" so I'd best check out what NOT to do or wear. Pick stuff that you like and have seen on others that you think looks good. Me, I don't like those tight suits with short arms etc. Looks like you borrowed your kid brother's clothes... but that's my opinion. I wouldn't dress like this guy. He looks VERY conservative minded, to me and spends too much time trying to get his hair in place. I hate perfumes of any kind on both men and women and can't stand soaps with added smells. I'm very sensitive to taste, touch and smell. Got too much perfume... I likely won't get near you. Brush your teeth, smile. You look great.
Straight laces don't work for everyone. The purpose of a lace is to tighten the shoe around your ankle and hold it from wobbling around. Now all feet are not the same and shoes sometimes fit in length but are loose around the ankle and that's when laces are helpful. Straight laces only work if your shoes fit perfectly without the laces too. Also, you needn't buy straight laces, you can just learn how to bar lace.
hold up, first chelsea boots, evryone can wear it, those ill fitting pants are different problem, those fall to "SKINNY" category, skinny pants considered as a trend, not a timeless piece. secondly, find a good tailor and ask them to hem your jeans to your bodytype JUST DONT MAKE IT SKINNY (its not comfortable, i've tried)
I get peeved when people make a how to or tutorial on very personal shit. Like taste is very subjective. Like cool how these two agree on the styles they like and don't like, but consider themselves expects in fashion when fashion is basicly shaming people into following other people's tastes. Like want some real fashion advice? Wear what makes you feel confident and good. Like I would avoid a dude being so uptight about fashion with a mile long pole, but a dude in a Hawaiian shirt, jeans and slip on slippers just walking down sf market? Dude you look like you're just vibing and I'd kick it with ya. Be confident in who you are and your clothes choices will follow and no matter how "good" you are to the public, if you don't feel confident, yall ain't gonna look confident.
Trying too hard wearing leather over 40? That sound dumb to me. First off, what if he's biker? Second surely it depends on the guy. Sure some scrawny clean cut guy or frumpy dad type would look bad. But I well built guy with a big ole beard would look perfectly natural. If you try telling me Jason Mamoa can't still rock a leather jacket now that he's 40, I'll laugh so hard in your face that I'd collapse. Sure, he's not exactly "stylish" but he nails the badass for life look. Also last time I checked biker jackets were considered a timeless pieces.
* I disagree on the “no straight leg jeans on tall, thin men” one. 501’s or slim fits look great on me. I get tons of compliments. * Cologne is disgusting and forces others to breathe in chemicals the do not wish to be exposed to. NO smelly cologne. * You did not mention nose hair and ear hair. These are really disgusting. Also ear wax and flaky dry skin in the ears. Yuck!
Lmao 15 years in the textile manufacturing here - y’all need to actually go to school bout this topic before making videos! If not, you sound no better than a hungry commission only salesman. Style comes with years of understanding your unique background, trying to represent THAT and your future aspirations. There is literally no perfect one way to dress - as the French taught me, perfection is the devil in disguise.
The dude in the leather jacket looks dope. Im gonna rock my combat boots leather jacket and white tea with tats till im in the grave. Fuckin normies trying to make everyone look like a macy's commercial. This life is literally a pick ur own adventure book, dress weird af. Make these two uncomfortable.
Guys dress however you like, stop listening to people (specially these two) of what is fashion and what is not. You like wearing a lot of cologne then go ahead you have hair sticking out of the back of your neck then it's beautiful you have dirty shoes, then own it dirty finger nails makes you a man owning faded, ripped or pilled items makes you stand out Love yourself.
damn what kind of jacket is that? the color's off and those "worn" places are just on random spots dude. and, you're wearing buttons? don't think you're in the position to give advice to men while dressing like a schoolboy yourself, but nice try.
Dude really, I can pull off straight legs and I’m thin. Your rocking a undershirt on a blown out over shirt, with a tight denim jacket. What makes this worse, your wife is sitting next to you and is allowing this, wow! You all got your nerves
Disagree for the sneakers part like vans, converse cmon tying laces looks so great on them especially high chuck taylor. Maybe if u using luxury sneakers like Vans Vault series, AJ or like Converse CDG that's better looks more clean suit with them. Second some sneakers look better when is dirty or looks beater. Third old man looks bad with leather jacket cmon tell that to arnold the terminator ( this one so wrong many old ppl looks so badass with this one ). Some tips is good but dont be so normies
His wife, influenced by Hollywood and media, probably dresses him in the morning. He just might grow a backbone one day and loose her. Personally I would pass her over like bad fruit.
Nice job showing a heavy set man wearing chukkas while wearing unflattering jeans to make your point, how lame. Showing pic of a heavy set man wearing a Henley only, the person really had no head, legs or hips? Really people... if you look hard enough you will find someone wearing the wrong leather jacket style or the entire outfit is no good.
Talk to anyone at vogue about these two, and they'll just say, "who?" Remember that before treating their words like gospel or as an example of what most people think.
it's the people that make the clothes shine. You can pull off anything if you're a confident and likeable in general. For example these 2 smug douchebags giving you fashion advice make the clothes they're wearing look like crap; while it might look great on anyone else.
And what credentials do you have that qualify you to comment on behalf of ‘women’ in general ? I think this is probably just your opinion… anyway good luck x
Liking the outfit today Dorian, looking sharp. Taken Ashley‘s advice here, I would add a crewneck sweater for us bigger chested guys on Tip number 2. Read her article or watch her video on sweaters and cardigans in her Essential series.
Just a few tips are reasonable. But the dressing your age is blatantly ignoring your likings for me. Why can't i wear streetwear 30 years plus, something like a graffiti sprayed hoodie if i like it and feel comfortable?
Tying your laces kills your style? Really? Nonsense. Just admit you’re being paid to plug a product. Stick an ad at the end of the video, rather than make up negatives about shoe laces.
If you want to be booring and never be looked at, then these tips are for you! If you look like you just stumbled out of the jungle and happy, women Will notice you!
the guy here is committing a big fashion crime with that t shirt under the denim jacket. The collar ring is distracting and contrasts badly, and the navy colour is too similar to the jacket- white or black single colour would look much better.
The idea that you need to wear tapered pants with Chelsea boots. Is a silly narrow-minded idea. I ware Chelsea boots ( they're easy to take on and off). I treat them like regular shoes . They go very well with my 501s.
So many butthurt people over the leather jacket. I must say I would agree with Ashley & Dorian if only I hadn't ordered leather jackets and they are already on the way.
Lol go pree margiela, they have a while load of shoes which are specifically designed to look dirty and beat up. You guys are behind af when it comes to current fashion
This cologne tip also majorly applies to women and girls and their perfumes. In any of these cases, if you can be smelled from 10 or 20 or more feet away when you walk by, it probably says that you should cut down and learn how to wear fragrances. 😂
Cologne is meant to attract, imo. Every time I walk around if I get close to someone and she smells of a nice perfume I instantly find that attractive.
If you ask me, women are determine that men become like them. Totally paranoid about what they look like, if they got their face on, before step out the door.
You know it's like everybody's a style expert specifically cuz they want to say less is more. It's like all of these RU-vid videos regurgitate what the other person just said. About style about what to wear how to wear it you know what's killing your style letting that white T-shirt show under that sweater. That is horrifying. You know what's killing her style that shirt it looks like it belongs on a kitchen table. But at least these guys admit there's certain things they can't wear. I guess that's what makes some a tad better than all the other videos.
