Financial adviser here, cars are very very rarely an investment, yes, classics can go up in value, but after storage, repair, maintenance, restoration, parts, insurance, tax etc etc you rarely break even let alone make more money than if you’d just put the money in the markets over that time. Obviously this can happen but it’s rare, so don’t go into it to make money, go into it to buy a car you love and gives you enjoyment! Financial adviser with classic cars.

I’ve had 3 go up but I bought very well. A 1977 targa I bought in 1998 for £5600 is now worth £40000. A boxster 987.2 I purchased in 2022 for £7500 is £12000. My gemballa 700 cayenne I bought without paperwork but got it verified after I paid £37,000 in 2019 ; it’s now valued at £50,000 by Sothebys(although these don’t sell!).

Great to see the 406 coupe mentioned. I have 7 of these v6 manuals in my collection and they are brilliant cars. I have sold two of these previously for £5000 plus so prices are definitely on the rise. Great looking, great to drive, great performance and bullet proof reliability. They also hold their own when parked next to my Ferraris. Great videos too keep up the good work. 👍

My parents had a Rioja Red P38 4.0. After 205,000 miles it decided to blow its suspension compressor on the way to Manchester Airport, very loud. Drive back was not comfortable. I cried the day it went to the scrapyard, and I was 15. Genuinely lovely cars. P696 YVL RIP 🙏 he also had a Cougar too, which was fucking dire.

The Audi 80! Story time, gather round. My grandparents had an Audi 80 convertible in that British racing green colour, LXI 8080 was the reg, they had it for a while and then drove it all the way down to their little holiday home in Cyprus. They kept it for a few years and sold it to a restaurant owner down the street for £2000. This was in the 90s/early 00s before I was born, and yet that same restaurant owner still talks about that car to this day. Hope that was interesting 😂

I lived in Cyprus '91-'95 and at that time all cars had 100% tax on them(so a car valued at £4000c would cost you £8000c, this is a car which would cost roughly £1000 in the UK)but I'm guessing that things have changed since it became an EU member

There was a 2000/01 Range Rover P38 Holland and Holland left abandoned in my local supermarket car park. The car was sitting there for 3/4 months before the tax ran out. Eventually the DVLA clamped it and a few weeks later it's been lifted. It's now sitting in the local compound and it'll either be scrapped or if they have sense it'll goto auction. It even had the original drinks cabinet in the boot

The 406 Coupé is a real beauty and definitely a future classic. I'd go for the first generation TT roadster instead of the 80 Cabriolet, they are more iconic and might rise in value quicker. The E-Class convertible is already no longer a cheap modern classic. I wish I could buy a 944 that cheap here in Germany, that would be my first choice.

I have a big soft spot for the 406 Coupe. The thing about the Celica is that it was launched in 1999, which is amazing given how sharp it still looks. The engine is apparently built by Yamaha, so it's actually a four-wheel motorcycle, and it apparently loves to rev. The 944 has come down a lot, they were north of £5k for a project and at least £10+k for a nice one not too long ago

Thumbs up for the Peugeot 406 Coupe! I had one for 17yrs and only had to sell it because I needed rear doors and it wasn't ULEZ compliant. For the 406 Coupe, there's also a 2.2 Petrol. The line up was 2.0 Petrol, 2.2 Petrol, 2.2 HDI and 3.0L V6 Petrol (in 2 separate guises, the later model was handed to Porsche to 'tweak' resulting in an increase from 194bhp > 210bhp). Nice bit of fun, some long forgotten models, loved the Saab, very distinctive design for both the 900 and 93. As the old saying goes, its fine buying the car, you have to run it and there is the problem with a lot of the choices. Top end stuff will need specialist or dealer maintenance and paperwork to keep it's provenance and to protect the future selling price. Then there's the UK road tax system.......

An interesting list. I like the Z4 idea : the 3.0 is a great engine, but the coupe is even more special and rare, but pricier. The Cougar definitely deserves respect : it's genuinely so much car for the money, and a 25 year Ford that mostly hasn't disintegrated. I saved one 3 years ago and it wasn't a difficult car to rejuvenate after 8 years laid up. However, the model was never a big deal at the time, so I doubt many will lust after them now.

I bought a 2005 Celica last month and I'm really enjoying it. A lot of these have been very questionably modified but I managed to find a well maintained and unmodified example with no rust. I had to pay a bit more for it but I think it was worth it.

Hi Matt My Classic choice is Jaguar S type 2006 Diesel automatic I have owned it for 18months with no issues.I took your advice and have done a gearbox service rear axle service and a timing belt. i have had no faults and it runs like clockwork it has just turned 70,000 miles. It has full service history and it cost me £4000. An absolute bargain Insurance is cheap £336.00 I tax the car for 6 months a year at a cost of £228.25. I get between 30 and 40 mpg dependent on the journey. A fabulous car the best Jaguar I have owned, I have owned an early E type flat floor a 3.8MK 2, Several XJ6 and Daimler 2.5 saloons. Best wishes Alan

Nice selection, gave me some ideas. What about VWs competitor to the 944 - the Corrado vr6 or g60? Biased as I own one but for me I like that it is something completely different to normal VWs. In VAGs line up in more recent years it would most certainly be badged Audi as it is far more premium inside than, say a mk2 golf. Niche maybe but so are saabs (which I love).

I've owned a full spec 728i and i regret selling that car, unfortunately needed the money at the time. But consider the e38 as an investments and you will lose all your money 3x. Parts are NOT cheap, bushes and links are extremely expensive, engine drinks oil and needs a lot of care as all vanos from the time, electronics after 10 years (mine was at the time of seeling it) were already glitchy and needed attention, and mpg is ... well horrid 😅 that being said, i am currently looking into buying another one because it was the best all around car i ever had. Comfort spec seats are unmatched even by new 7 series, engine is quiet, it is lovely on the bends and while you do feel the need for at least 100 more hp, it doesn't push you to drive it hard to enjoy it, it is chill and relaxed

Have owned few and driven a number of Saabs over the years. The scuttle shake on the convertibles is like driving in a pram, so ride quality is poor comfirtable seats help but ,, . Mx5 and Honda 2000 would be my choice .

Consider the MGF/MGTF. They can be had for nothing, parts are plentiful since they sold tons of them and they are the last of the line of MG roadsters. Only thing you have to watch out for is rust and head gasket issues and I'd go for the TF if you can since it looks sharper and you don't have to worry about the hydragas suspension.

Another interesting video & I endorse the financial adviser on cars in general not being true investments. This is not the reason I wished to comment however. As a buyer for Land Rover Parts for 10 years spent between Unipart & Land Rover under Ford I witnessed the demand figures for the P38A spares. The feedback from dealers was frightening and what kept customers coming back was they simply loved the product. One lady I remember being told had been back to the dealer 21 times in the first year of ownership! I visited many suppliers. Two key points from those supplier interactions. The rear hatch leaks and getting supplies was a horror story since many failed in Solihull's final inspection wet test. Second and much more serious and also a consideration if damp gets in is the control module that is situated under the driver's seat. Parts are limited ( the chip within it ) and if a substitute is chosen (2nd hand ) it has to be coded to the vehicle. One reason I run a 1974 Classic two door. Plus it doesn't tell me stuff like 'put your seat belt on' which incidentally I do!!

Loved this video, I have had several 93’s and agree they are fab cars and bullet proof. I’m an Alfa nut though having had a Brera v6, 2 x 156’s, 3 x 916 Spiders and an s3 Spider so was disappointed none featured or my other love a Nissan 350/370z of which I’ve had 3 - one was actually featured in modern classic magazine. You’ve got me thinking of my 10 picks, so thanks👍

Im not sure why people like to buy old cars that where never good even at the time thinking there now because there old good when the cars they where worse then at the time also still exist 🤔. Regards these cars when they go up they may go up a bit there however going to cost alot to keep working so ur profit will be 0 even if they double in price. Just need to look at 80s or 90s mediocre cars there still not worth much especially when u pay to drive into towns now

Most 1990’s Mercedes are a great buy and are increasingly rare, notably, the 190E’s and E-Classes. I’d happily give one of my testicles for a good E320 Cabriolet, specifically in dark blue with the ivory leather interior and 8 hole alloy wheels. The P38’s are absolutely 100% a good buy. The were not all that well received originally and when the L322 was launched, given the title of the worst Range Rover ever. While some of that may be true, the few that are left are worth buying and saving.

I think the better Peugeot to put your money in is the RCZ. A few still under £3000, and the petrol 200hp is a great car to drive and will return over 40 mpg.

The Cougar, which was available in the U.S. too, was based on the Ford Contour, which was based the Ford Mondeo (clear as mud?). I had a 1998 Ford Contour Sport with the 2.5 V6. It was a great car, and sporty indeed. Even Consumer Reports, which seldom gushes about cars, called it "a BMW for half the price."

I think you’re spot on with the P38. I think maximum returns would come with any of the limited edition models, such as the Westminster, H&H, anniversary model. I’ve no doubt the single UK Linley model is worth a pretty penny. I think another to make this list would be an S2000, slightly over budget, but will hold money well.

944, I would go the hardtop, but they came with a huge sunroof, that could tilt, or could be completely removed and stored in the boot. The turbo's fly. The later ones had a better looking front grill. Interesting video Matt, thanks.

The vauxhall omega B is worth a mention as there are only about 600 left on the road so already quite a rare car. Rot kills them but alot of the surviving ones left on the road have been under sealed like mine. The 3.2 MV6 manual is like a mk2 lotus carlton if they ever did one.
