For everyone who keeps asking/commenting: Yes, I call the shark Jeremiah. That's the name I gave him when I started streaming Raft, way before I ever reached the Radio Tower for the first time to tell me his name is Bruce. I know that his canonical name, but I'm going to continue to call him Jeremiah because that's what his name is in my heart.
LOL I named him Bruce from the very beginning because of Finding Nemo... didn't know until later that that was his actual name in game xD but Jeremiah is cute too
Naming Bruce before going to the radio tower is another rookie mistake. But seriously a rookie mistake I keep making is to go to the nearest possible safe point when in any severe danger, aka go off the cliff if you are being attacked by a boar and bird you cant handle.
And Bruce in Finding Nemo is in turn named after the shark from Jaws. Naming the shark Bruce has a looong history. :D Fun fact, "Don't bring me down, Bruce" in the song "Don't Bring Me Down" by ELO, is also a homage to the shark from Jaws.
If you want to have even more "alone time" after killing the shark, take the meat (4 of them) but leave the head (5th item), that way the shark won't disappear right away and the respawn timer doesn't start till it does, gaining precious minutes
@Gustavo Araujo the head isnt useless. Beside you can wear it as a hat or place on a trophy board you can use it for making biofuel. 1 head equals 5 coconuts. Same for all other heads you can loot.
Me and my friends have done that but was not sure if it actually worked but when in mid game the sharks become your food source so dont do that youll get less food
Another worth noting - Mark your original foundations! I set my first grill and purifier right in the center (as you did) and as soon as I get my hands on paint, I slap some on those first four. They're literally the center of our Raft worlds, all debris spawns around them. Should someone happen to build out all in one direction, confusion will ensue when debris is only flowing towards one side later on. Good stuff!
The flotsam also only spawns in 16 blocks to either side of that center, in the direction of the wind (or the direction of travel after unlocking the Engine). Also, because of how wide the flotsam pieces are, you only need to place collection nets every other block and you will still catch 85-95% of debris while saving on crafting materials.
One tip that can really help is the storage, all of them can be mounted on walls. So plop down a single wall and you can put like 12 of the default ones on it ( 6 each side ). It really helps to declutter the center.
I would say 14 clay and 19 sand. Prioritizing the advanced water purifier was a big one for me. That frees up enough wood to offset some of the smelting use.
One tip that helped me is knowing that the shark is centered on your raft. If you park a little ways from an island, throw a bait off the far side from the island and swim a bit you have more time to explore under water because the shark is still by your raft a ways away. I got a lot more done with the cost of a bit more swimming. Also learn the timing of the shark bite. When he opens his mouth stab, you have a good chance to hit him and then I swing around and try to stab his tail as he leaves sometimes I get 2 hits in that way.
@@Sembel-xh9vq honestly if your good with the spear you don't even need the bait. i tend to park about a 10 second swim from a landing spot and never to rarely get bothered by the shark
@Wicked Goddess There's also a tech ( bug) to avoid taking damage from the shark, all you have to do is swim towards the shark when he's hunting you and he will miss his bite
I have never crafted bait. If you park a bit out from the island, he might get you once on your way to or from the island, but you have free reign of the reefs so its worth it to take one or two hits.
Now that the full game out you need A TON of seaweed for the 6th story island so collecting a lot of it is important. However a tip I see a lot of people miss out of involves Bruce(She calls him Jeremiah). When you finally kill him at an island and start collecting his corpse, stop collecting after the forth shark steak. This way you get 5 minutes of him being gone instead of the traditional 3 minutes.
I disagree on the seaweed. It's used to make the diving gear, which greatly speeds up the underwater looting of large islands. Also, I don't tend to bother with sharkbait. Killing him gives you more time and it gives you food. Once you have the bow, especially with metal arrows, killing him becomes really easy, no more miss-timing the stab and getting bit.
I'm torn on the flippers/oxygen bottle combo. Yes, it is quite useful but they break down so fast it's not even funny! It feels like it takes half of its durability just to gather enough seaweed to make another pair which turns them into very tedious pieces of gear to use.
@@Kentauros1991I don't tend to bother on small islands, but on big islands they're quite a time saver. Especially as their benefits stack with Salmon Salad and Spicy Pineberry.
Using the second tier spear to kill the shark is trivial, somehow the attack windup and distance of the shark before it hits you line up perfectly. Click once the shark opens its mouth and you will hit it without taking damage yourself every single time, you can probably get 2-3 more hits in afterwards too!
I started playing 3 hours ago. I can confirm that I made all of these mistakes (that were available to make) and I went through 7 worlds and multiple deaths so far :D
Quick collection basket tip; if the shark is attacking it you can actually just remove it and place it back down to instantly get the shark off of it. Comes back full hp as well. (Note: you should still protect/fortify your collection baskets, this is just an early game thing where you dont really have/want to spend the resources to do so)
I feel like another useful tip is properly conserving raft reinforcements, if you have a reinforced piece just jutting out every 4 squares (on one side of the raft, not in a radius) then Bruce won't attack anything, since reinforced parts are invincible and for some reason his AI works like that
Scrap is kinda rare out of crates and often hard to keep up with your tools and building solely from crates so scrap from islands can be pretty important
honestly I think the best option right away is to just learn real fast how to hunt the shark, its really easy and saves lots of resources, in fact gives more resources
great video! essential tips! To add to the island resource tip... don't decide to not pick up something because you think you have enough... YOU NEVER HAVE ENOUGH. Pick up everything you can no matter if you are currently overflowing with it.
Well, except for stones I'd say... Picking them up just wastes hook durability, and you _really_ don't need that many (and for the potentail later use, there's _way_ better options)
After 14 in-game days in Raft I'm only now finding out that potato and beets are plantable. I've been planting watermelons and assuming I need to find seeds at some point.
One of the best beginner tips videos I've come across. Just got the game, got a 9x9 fortified base, building vertical from there. Would love to see a few tips about future proofing. Like, maybe let people know WHY to save beets and potatoes, as they are used in soup recipes. That kinda thing. It may spoil some mechanics, but shouldn't reveal any story. top tip you should never throw the shark bait far from the raft, instead place it right next to your raft and use a spear to fully kill Bruce to gain 4 large shark meat but stop after the fourth meat. while saving your bait for when he respawns, you get lots of time to loot under water that way.
Hey :) When I began playing Raft I totally fell for the immediate survival problem and basically consumed all the beet and potatoes I found, either raw or cooked. Concerning the sharkbait: I almost entirely stopped using shark bait at all. It either needs about 2 to 3 floating rafts to get the necessary 3 vine goo for a bow (one for research, 2 for the actual recipe of the bow). Alternatively it is also possible to go for as little as 2 sharkbaits. Usually 2 baits give enough time to farm 14 sand/clay and 3 seaweed to get to a bow that way. from then on, it's shark hunting season and I never bother about needing food or getting attacked at an island anymore :)
Another shark hunting tip. I shoot him in the mouth with the bow then switch to the metal spear as he passes and then try and get as many stabs as I can
One tip that I use is when i get a bow and arrows i throw some shark bait and then when the shark bites the bait i shoot him with the bow and repeat the process, once he dies you have a much longer time to gather materials, you can use a spear but with a bow you never have to leave the raft
I guess not many other made my mistake of fully deconstructing their raft, when it got stuck early on... Found out the hard way that it can't be rebuilt and this soft locks the world. 😐

Bruce stays close to the raft so keeping the raft away from the islands is a good idea as he won't bother you since you're too far away. I haven't used shark bait in a long time since this but early game one is probably still needed so he doesn't follow you as you're swimming to the island.
Thank you. This has been more helpful than anything else I have looked at. I don't usually play these sort of games but saw The Click play and thought it looked like fun. Unfortunately there was no tutorial and I found myself looking up Raft Wiki or RU-vid videos every 5 minutes which was so frustrating. I confess I made almost every single one of those mistakes but will try again now that I am better informed!
Great vid and explanations. I started playing like 3 weeks ago, and ended up restarting from the beginning four times--each time learning something new. Now, I'm really happy with my progress. I've completed the story and am now revisiting all the locations to stock up on resources, getting ready to build a whole new raft behind my current one.
If you practise fighting the shark alot you can get fuel (shark head), food and no shark for the cost of just 1 (wood) spear everytime he respawns. U just hit the shark in hes head when he comes for u, U can get 3 hits almost everytime if u just practise a lot.
Best use of fish bite is to kill sharks. Another importat thing is to make bow as sson as posible. Most arrows or even all of them you can get back and it is best way to defent from shark and other enemies. Nets can be on outer layer of raft but only when you can fortifie them. Colect scrap it is more useful than most beginer players think. Just few things you forgot.

One way to cheese the underwater item collection, throw the shark bait into the part of the water that is still too shallow for you to walk in but where the bait will still float. The shark will still attack it and you can spear it to death. From there, collect the meat from the shark, but not the shark's head. Leaving the head will keep the shark's body from despawning and spawning in a new shark. This will get you a solid 3 or 4 minutes of undisturbed item collection time.
There's actually an argument to be made for not immediately making a spear since you still eat up wood every time the shark attacks (assuming you are repairing). then spending 2 wood and 2 plastic every 5 minutes isn't really too big of a deal compared to the resources for the spear and repairs. In the beginning you're not really using plastic for much besides a cup and hooks anyway.
Other people have suggested this, but to offer hard numbers: if you kill the shark but leave any part of the corpse, you get five minutes before it despawns. Then you can harvest the head if you want it just before the 5 minutes are up and get another 3 minutes before it respawns. I actually set 5-min and 3-min timers on my phone so I always know how much shark-free time I have in the water. 8 minutes is plenty to loot everything important around most small islands.
I noticed the new update made the game alot easier on normal difficulty. I got to quiet the collection before getting to the first island. Also killing Bruce helps alot in collecting the items around the island.
He's good eating too. Once I got the shark timing down good, I never went back to eating anything else again. He respawns so often, that in single player you can practically live on grilled shark steaks forever.
Just watching your video.... I had no idea I could stall reeling in my hook and gather more materials. I was simply casting and hooking item by item as they drifted by.

6:16 I hardly dissagre with that one. With a good use of the Throwable Anchor, you can put the Raft in a position that will allow you to mine the entire island without worrying about the shark, and without using shark bait. The shark will ALWAYS swim in the area surrounding your raft, no matter were you are. Unless you attract it to were you are, if you anchor your Raft far enough of the reef, you shouldn't have problems with the shark. You only need to anchor the raft far enough from the island, swim there and get to land for a little moment. Once the shark returns to swim around your raft, you should be in the clear. (It is also very good to dop all your fishing wile you are on the island, give it that the shark won't attack your raft for as long as you are not on it)
I don't know if I did all the mistakes but at least half or more, thanks for the tips. I would like a longer more detailed how to guide on the early parts of the game to get beyond always starving and thirsting, if you have the time. Thanks

One quick tip for anyone trying to make shark bait. The wooden rod has a significantly higher chance of getting the little fishies you need. It won't last as long as the metal one but it's faster and probably still more resource efficient.

Played stranded deep recently.. First 15mins in raft. We found an island.. Got on the island. The raft abandoned us. Next 15mins. We tried to build our own raft on the island. After that Googled about it. Felt stupid. Started new game. 😂

I’ve been playing this game for the first time along with my friend for the past month, we’ve just gotten the receiver to work. So it’s good to know that we’ve forgotten about like half of the important things we need to be doing.
I keep blueprints from progress/nostalgia. Also didn't like that they fully changed the story with the new update. I understand why, but I liked that it was a lot darker before
One thing I'll say is that you usually want to harvest all algae and scrap you can be bothered to harvest. Scrap is probably the resource that you'll most feel the scarcity of when building your raft (besides wood), a lot of stuff takes scrap to craft, from tools to crafting stations. Seaweed has lots of uses, but mostly you want it to upkeep your flippers and bow, which you should always have on you. The thing I think is not worth bothering with are Sand, Clay and Rocks, i usually just gather enough for two furnaces and an advanced water purifier. Food Bowls and Cups are very much not worth it atm, just get a Canteen or a Stack of normal food. Rocks are not as nearly on a high demand, unless you're playing MP and need lots of arrows or you haven't crafted the Anchor for whatever reason.
Nothing is a useless material anymore with the new machine that was added to the game (I won't spoil it, but you'll figure it out soon enough). I completely stripmine the underwater area of islands, excess rocks just go in the thing, to get turned into cubes, for reasons.
@@AlexanderBurgers Rocks are literally the least valuable material for the recycler, just use your excess wool, it has the same value as titanium for some reason (2 wool= 1 scrap cube). Collecting rocks is really not worth it, the ammount you get from flotsam is usually enough to upkeep stone arrows and net launcher ammo (until you stop using them once you get enough metal to waste on arrows and all the animals) plua whatever you need to craft, its just wasting durability on your hook.
I just got raft and i started on hard difficulty. Definitely scary because if i die i need to wait for my friend to get on. Luckily we have gotten far without dieing and researched almost everything
I would have added "Prioritizing Cladding" to the list. I was leery of using my finite supply of metal early on, especially since I didn't know if I'd have enough metal to repair the cladding, whereas I knew I could get enough wood and plastic to repair the decking. Didn't know until I tried it that the cladding completely keeps the shark off them, way more efficient in the long run. Also you can run a perimeter of cladding with a gap and the shark won't touch stuff internal to the perimeter (haven't tested how much of a gap he'll ignore, but definitely 1 space gets ignored.)
One more thing about the radar: if you have multiple blue dots on the screen at once and are having trouble remembering which blue dot you need to go to, or you want to return to a story island you visited previously, the dot with a square around it corresponds to the current code you have input on the code machine to the right of the screen.
7:00 I can't say I agree with this at all. If you're not speedrunning, which most people aren't doing, you absolutely need a ton of vine goo throughout the game. They're required for flippers and oxygen bottles, which make harvesting all other underwater resources a lot easier, and you also need them for bows, which you'll burn through a lot of when visiting the story locations and fighting enemies.
The best way to explore reefs, in my opinion, is by killing the shark. There is a really easy method that can help to kill it, which is using a bow and a spear. Simply shoot the shark right as it lunges at you, which cancels the attack, then chase after it, stabbing it with the spear until its out of reach. Repeat this several times, and the shark is dead! It may sound hard to properly time the bow shot, but its actually pretty easy, and im not anything special. When you kill the shark, you have 3-8 minutes to loot the reef, plus four very good food items!
Yes, you could make shark bait, or you could just 1v1 the shark to kill it. But be prepared to make multiple wooden Spears if thats your weapon of choice
On this note it takes 1.5 wooden spears to kill the shark. I always immediately craft 2 spears at the start before anything else so when I get to the first Island I find I can kill the shark, not loot it's head (giving more time before it's respawn) which gives me max time to get everything I need off that first island to get smelter going.
this might be a dumb question but for the receiver tip, when you say "have it face the front of your raft" which side of it should be facing the front? the display monitor side or the antennae dish side?
You want the monitor to face the back! Basically you want it oriented so that you can see the screen when you're not facing the direction with the waves behind the raft, if that makes more sense
Another big mistake I see a lot of people make is to make their raft huge so the shark won't get to their stuff. I know you mentioned they can build a long one to the side, but so many people doesn't realize they can fortify the raft, and if they actually do realise... they fortify the whole thing after making it enormous. That takes a lot of unnecessary time and effort. You only need to fortify the outer raft squares, and considering the raft needs to be built upwards for the radio signal to reach it anyways, the foundation doesn't have to be that big (that also makes it easier to steer and park your raft as well as saving motor resources and biofuel). So plan the foundation of your raft, then fortify around it. After that you don't have to worry about the shark destroying your raft ever again. For me I think that's the most important tip because it literally changes your whole game experience.
You used to need to fortify the entire raft, though. I believe it was in the update after they added the first set of story islands that they made it so you only had to armor the outer perimeter.
with the tip of knowing that you can counter the shark's attacks i usually make it a point to kill the shark when i stop at an island and loot the water around the raft first. even at the beginning when i'm looting EVERYTHING i can get most of it before the shark respawns and bites me in the back lol
My 2 cents. Place a full wall near the middle of the raft and attach storage chests to the wall. You can fit 6 on both sides, 12 in total. The shark will destroy all chests if both foundations it touches are destroyed, so refinforce one and you're fine. You can reinforce a collection net allowing you to have them on the outside of the raft.

Another mistake you can add is you don't need shark bait. I noticed while playing if you get in the water on the opposite side of the island the shark won't attack you. He only sits near your raft until he sees you in the water.
Regarding the first tip, at least on the Hard setting I play with I tend to disagree with the first Tipp. Killing the shark will (mostly but not always for some reason) result in 2 sharks spawning which are way more annoying and ressource unfriendy to Deal with compared to just ignoring the Initial shark. To deal with that I have some other solutions. - Like most people know make some sacrifitial triangles at the edges of your raft to Lose less ress upon an attack. - If he attacks collection nets just Pick them up and replace them with full health without any ress lost. - Upon an attack use an axe to destroy the Attacked Part to get back some ressources (you get 100% back remiving a triangle foundation) 😉 Overall that makes it quite managable especially early on when you need to manage your Ressources😉
Or, instead of making the shark bait every time you land at an island, you can just park far away from the island and swim over to it since the shark will stay at your raft
I tried armoring the edge and the shark ate center tiles. With no edge options it will eat the center. I now prioritize armoring interior sections with vital infrastructure sitting on it rather than the edge.
That sounds like you need to update your game, since he's not able to do that anymore. He is only able to attack the outside of your raft so reinforcing them should have stopped him attacking your raft. Once again the update for the new islands and such stopped him from attacking the inner raft.
The weapon is not really neccesary if you are playing Solo Hard. Until you can get access to the bow and arrow, that is. (Considering that attacking the shark long enough will eventually kill it, and inHard, it will mean that you will deal with 2 or 3 sharks if you kill another) I discovered that the easiest way to play Hard difficulty in a solo run is to play passive, not attacking the shark and letting it chew on your raft parts until you can get Collection Nets. Until then, you will be quicker in getting the materials to rebuild your raft and expand it than the shark in destroying it. Once you get enough rope, you can surround all your raft in collection nets and never worry about the shark again, this is because you can take out the Net much faster than the shark can destroy it. Every time it attacks it, you just take it out, and put it back in place. Best part... the net won't have any damage. You can do this indefenitly, and the shark will never eat your Raft again.
Antennas don't have to be placed on the same level as receiver: they can be a half-wall lower or higher. (I actually needed to do this in one of my raft builds) So, you can place them a half-wall above the water and they will work.
Good video. The only thing that's missing for me is a larger focus on the shark killing cheese, which you only mentioned as a 5s aside in the weapons segment. In my opinion, once you know it, it becomes much better to just invest 1.5 wooden spears every island to kill the shark. It avoids the need for fishing almost altogether, as you get shark meat for food, and no longer need to make bait. (For the record: The "shark killing cheese" is attacking with a spear just as its mouth opens, which interrupts its attack, making the shark a complete joke. Learn the timing once and you'll know it forever)
