Citizen Kabuto in the thumbnail is an instant Like. Bunch of Space Cockneys on their way to a vacation on Space Majorca fighting Godzilla and magic wizards. Just wonderful. Was genuinely funny, too. Had a soft spot for Urban Chaos and The Nomad Soul from around the same time, too. Hostile Waters, too.
URBAN CHAOS!!!! One of my fav ever games. GTA3 before GTA3 with arrests and ancient evils. Loved it. And Kabuto made my laugh so hard. Loved the base building stuff. These could be updated so beautifully... well preferably not under current micro transaction, season pass BS.
Radiata Stories is one of the best PS2 and Square games that nobody seems to have played. A massive roster of recruitable characters who all operate on their own 24-hour schedules, multiple paths, and phenomenal writing make it an absolute gem.

I can’t explain how happy I am to see The Neverhood on this list. I’ve played that game for years and years, even made a couple LittleBigPlanet stages based on its story. I’m surprised there was no mention of its PS1 sequel The SkullMonkeys though 🤔
This is the single best list this channel has ever produced, simply because it includes games outside of the public zeitgeist (which like 90% of games aren't really a part of)
If Tachyon: The Fringe hasn't made one of these lists yet, it should make the next one. Space sim with Bruce Campbell voicing the lead character. Plus Evil Dead based-cheat codes, with Bruce mocking you for using them.
I miss that game. Can't get it to run right on modern pcs. That, and my flight stick setup doesn't work anymore. Saitek x52, throttle, 100 programmable buttons and a clear touchscreen you could slide inserts behind. I had shields and energy mapped to that. Touch the ship rear, shift shield to the rear, etc. Flight games don't hit the same without all that for me. I can't even recall the one I liked best. I just know it was open-space. Base building, trading, piracy, etc. You visited your aunt at the start, who is some pirate queen. Thats all I remember. Had loads of good mods too. I had an mp3 player in my cockpit with visualizer so I could look at stuff and chill during those long sublight hauls. I think it was a 2. Not freespace 2, privateer 2 or X2, though.
I picked up BG&E when it came out on GameCube and loved it. Probably the second best game on the system, just behind Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. (Darkened Skye deserves to be on *some* list, but not this one... I loved it at the time, but it has not held up very well.)
El Shaddai being on this list amazes me. That’s one of those games that nobody has ever heard of besides people who stumbled upon it when it first released. Or people who adore hack and slash games like me and have gone out and played all of them.
Nice video Jess. I’d be curious to see a list of games that never got a sequel, even though one was alluded to in game. Advent Rising comes to my mind.
Man... I remember playing both *_Battlezone_* and *_Giants: Citizen Kabuto_* - The latter in particular because of _Delphi_ apparently having had her Chest covered up in the US release 🤣 Also the humor of that game was bloody hilarious... As was with what I'd describe as the unofficial sequel *_Armed and Dangerous_*
I played the battlezone demo when it was released...if it was '98, I must have been 10ish...and I've searched for every variant of "moon mining game 90s shareware pc" that I could think of several times in the last 10 or so years having vague recollections of it, trying and failing to remember the name. 5 seconds in to the battlezone entry, and I might have screamed a little bit from realizing what I was seeing. A years long mystery, solved. Thanks!
I can’t remember if it was in the previous list or not but Remember Me is such an underrated game in my opinion. It’s a little wonky but the story and characters are really fun!
Loved Giants. Hilarious game and variety of play. Loved the little village building levels and wrecking enemy camps with a massive elbow drop was so satisfying
The Neverhood was one of the few games I ever had in bootleg form. The art style reminded me of like classic Gumby or the California Raisin TV ads. But I would say I was firmly in the camp that found it too hard. I would flounce around the same few scenes over and over again but could never get a sense of what I was meant to be doing or how to tell the game to do it. Which was made so annoying because visually I wanted to love it so badly. But the game just would not allow that to happen,
If there's a commenter's edition 2 for this, I'd recommend adding Dreamscaper, Dark Chronicle (aka Dark Cloud 2), White Knight Chronicles 2 (combines 1 & 2), Rogue Galaxy, Summoner, Lords of the Fallen.
I may have mentioned before, but i'm going to repeat it again: Panzer Dragoon Saga! This groundbreaking RPG was a fierce competitor to final fantasy VII. The game had amazing elements of graphics music and gameplay. However, due to the commercial failure of the SEGA Saturn and the poor promotion of the game on the west (mainly due to the focus on the Dreamcast), this game, ultimately did not make the expected worldwide sales. To make matters worse, SEGA disbanded the production team (Team Andromeda) shortly after the release of this game, thus making this game have little hopes for porting, re-releasing, or re-mastering. Despite all of this, this game it is still praised as one of the best games of his generation, and also one of the best rpgs of all time.
I didn’t think anyone else played El Shadai. I honestly forgot it existed but I picked it up back in 2011 because Game Informer gave it a 9/10. Core memory unlocked.
The Longest Journey series is also my favorite adventure game series. Dreamfall and Dreamfall Chapters were also amazing and I replay the whole thing every couple of years.
not sure if its underrated but the Legend of Heroes Trails series (Sky, Zero, Azure, Cold Steel and Reverie) flies by alot of people's radar, not helping is the slow localization.
Couldn't agree more on Giants Citizen Kabuto. Ended up being one of my favorite games when it came out and consistently has staying one of my favorites ever since. The only other game that ever hit a higher mark for me is Clive Barker's Undying. So unappreciated. I remember that game getting reviews in the high 80s or low 90% and yet it crashed and burned. I'm not a horror game buff, but this game gave me the creeps multiple times and it is super fun to play. It was so poorly received that a couple years after its release I was in a book/game store one day and they had 7 or 8 brand new copies of the game for $1 each. I couldn't help but buy them all and gave them to friends over time in hopes they would discover and enjoy at forgotten treasure.
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath was critically acclaimed but sold poorly. It's the reason the devs went silent for so long. Only when the remaster was released on PS3 and Vita did it do very well. Amazing game.
I had waited too long and played it first on the Vita. That game was such a fun time. I've played a bit of each of the games in that universe and this is my favorite out of all of them.
Brothers In Arms: Hells Highway is one of the best WW2 games of its time. Unfortunately, its time was 2008, so it got missed by players because things like GTA4, Fallout 3, and Left 4 Dead game out during its release year. If you ever get a chance give it a try
Played a good half of the games on the list, and a couple of them are still on my list of games to play. Funny learning that The Neverhood got so popular in Russia, because I remember one of the first conversations about games with my ex girlfriend (who is Russian) being about how The Neverhood was one of her favorite games haha. She's also the person who told me about and recommended Behind Your Eyes to me. I think I bought Beyond Good and Evil when the price initially dropped, and although I did enjoy it I was and still am a little surprised at just how much of a swell of a cult following it developed. I definitely liked it but I never thought it was anything especially amazing. Was still looking forward to the sequel that will never happen haha. Also surprised to see El Shaddai on the list, not because I didn't think few people played it (I think I personally know just one other person who has), but because I didn't know it was all that critically acclaimed. I was always attracted to its otherworldly visual style, and one of the reasons I was immediately taken by Furi was because it sort of reminded me of El Shaddai.
Games I played a lot that were commercial flops include Jet Force Gemini, Beyond Good and Evil, Citizen Kabuto and Psychonauts (yes, it didn’t do well at the time, though it has proven a success in the ling run).
I'm one of the people who got lucky enough to get Beyond Good and Evil right off. Even now it's still one of my favorite games ever. A 10/10 beginning to end IMO. Just a shame that even if the sequel ever does come out, which I doubt, that it's looking like such a completely different game.
Robot Alchemic Drive - It's a great concept, but I frequently find it frustrating to play. Mainly it's hard to find a good vantage point to view the action. Watching from the ground isn't great because of the scale of the robot. Getting on top of a building is pretty much a requirement, but you often end up either too close to the action so that you can't really see everything, or so far away that you can't really see what's going on. It's also pretty hard to aim the projectile or beam weapons from a third-person, side view.
I'd like to add The Sinking City here. It's one of the quieter examples of greedy producer-wrought development hell. It's a fantastic Lovecraftian detective story from the devs that made all the great Sherlock Holmes games. The heart of a great game is there and reviewers loved the story, atmosphere, and detective gameplay. However, the somewhat glaring corners that had to be cut, the complete lack of advertising, and the fact that it could only be bought on EA's Origin store (Ugh) sank it.
There is a logic for why "Before Your Eyes" underperformed, the fact that it requires a webcam to fully take advantage of the game. Many people don't have a webcam and are not going to get one just for that game (i include myself on that, if not i would get it since it looks really interesting) and do not want a game that you can't have the full experience. So that leaves only the people that do have a webcam....
Well, I count double for Giants Citizen Kabuto, as I've played through it twice (not to menon all the times I started a playthrough and lost the save for some reason or another). I just love that game! Maybe it's time for another reinstall? 🤔
R.A.D. was by far my favorite PS2 game of all time. It wasnt perfect by any means, but it was really fun, and engaging. I really wish I could get a copy of this game that didnt cost so much. If they ever release it on the PS store, I highly recommend everyone give it a look.
I cannot believe 2 iterations of this list have happened now, and Elite Beat Agents has gotten the shaft both times. I don't even LIKE rhythm games that much, but WOW was this game amazing. Also, a couple levels completely abandoned it's joking tone, and the Christmas level especially was a MASSIVE tear jerker! Somehow, as good as this game was, it didn't even sell 180k copies in 3 years. Honestly was an injustice, as this game was SO good!
I’d recommend Enchanted Arms, a fully voiced RPG on the PS3 with a very fun unique system. Never heard anyone talk about it. Or Red Dead Revolver. The predecessor of the Red Dead Redemption series. Technically Red dead redemption is a sequel to Revolver. Very good story and fun game on the PS2/XBox
If you do another one, can I suggest Magic & Mayhem? I guess it didn't do well with the critics so wouldn't be on this list but I do feel this game is underrated...
Campy as hell, but I it kinda grew on me, apparently the jp was (as usual) much better in quality The use of the duel analog sticks to control each arm was pretty cool
Just started listening to Watch out for Fireballs and they talked about The Longest Journey a while ago. Interesting game which I never heard of but might have to try it now
Worst part about Neverhood is apparently the rights to different parts of the game belong to different companies. Which means unless someone spends a lot of money to purchase each part to congregate the rights in one place, there is little to no chance it will ever be available for digital purchase. Oh well, we'll always have Armikrog.
For me it's Earth Defense Force. Sure it is a series and not a single title, but for some reason really struggles to exist outside of Japan and 5 was teatering on being outright canceled, but it lived and came out. Honestly I love how corny the dialog can be, but in the grand scheme the story can be seen as unsettling. I always tell people forget the soulsborne games for difficulty you wanna feel true grueling pain then play that game on inferno difficulty
I have played most of the games on this lost. But when I was a kid, I spent way too many weekends with rented copies of Jet Force Gemini and Battlezone (N64). To this day, though, the shurikens in JFG are still some of my favorite weapons of ALL time. Beheading teddies with them. 😂😂😂
I feel, despite having a cult following, Rogue Galaxy is all but forgotten. I hear it got a rerelease on like PS3 or PS4, but I barely hear of it anywhere. Hard as balls, but such a good RPG. Also, A Bard's Tale, the hack-slash version. If you haven't heard of it before, well.... It's bad luck to be you~
Am I the only one who could probably enjoy a video of Jess talking about the consistency of dog vomit.... and still watch it clean through??? Obviously a rhetorical question but yeah, She is cool and has the voice of a female Morgan Freeman. A British one of course 🔥 cheers 🍻
As a kid in the 90’s I loved everything point n click 🤗 I really enjoyed playing the Neverhood with my siblings, between the 3 of us we somehow managed to finish the game 😝
Ok I know I'm one of three ppl that has heard of this game ... GLOVER FOR THE NINTENDO 64 OMG !!! Im not sure if it was a critically acclaimed game but I definitely had no one that played it and no one could beat it 😅
Damn, talk about going down memory lane, considering most games on this list are from the 90's and 2000's when gaming was still quite a mess, especially localization of Japanese games, it still was a great time.
