There's also the (temporary) beheading of the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robot of Sherwood which was a last-minute edit for reasons of taste due to events in the news.
A further example of episodes being edited to to terrorism, was a removed part of dialog in The Pyramid at the End of the World, which iirc was only briefly available in the Amazon version of the episode. Another cut scene we only know about due to the Series 8 leaked screeners, was Rusty self destructing at the end of Into the Dalek.
Not sure what I'm missing, but I've never thought the Flood zombies in "The Waters of Mars" were any different on screen to their original concept art. Everyone says they were toned down for telly, but I don't see it. 🤷♂️
I think the "censored" version of the TV movie is better and less disturbing than the full edition. And it wasn't the bullets that killed to 7th Dr, it was the medication.
The recent change to Davros bothered me a bit early on, but doesn't now that I know about the unfilmed scenes mentioned in the video. The core issue with standing-up Davros is that it was implied in the old story that he recovered his wrecked body into the life support/mobility chair, _then_ experimented to find out what the Kaleds were mutating into, _then_ adapted his existing mobility device into the foundation for the Dalek shells. These new scenes establish that he'd been examining Kaled mutations far earlier than "Genesis of the Daleks" explained, and might very well have developed his chair from existing Dalek shell prototypes. The Doctor's (and other Time Lords') intrusions into the timeline changed Davros' life. It's just that he was always an evil little psychopath in his scientific career. Too bad we didn't actually get to see these scenes. From what we saw in "Desination: Skaro" it just seemed to be a retcon without a reason, precisely because it didn't explain its contradiction of "Genesis of the Daleks." Turns out they had an explanation, but it was cut for budgetary reasons.
One moment I would have included in this is the scene in part 3 of "The Ark in Space" where Noah is transforming into a Wirrn and asks Vira to kill him, which was cut before transmission.
The water zombies terrified me just seeing them in itty bitty form on my phone. I sometimes watch that episode when I’m in the mood to be scared. You’re telling me they were supposed to be MORE terrifying? 😱
I don't think RTD will show Davros' journey that led him to be confined to a Dalek base unit. I think he prefers the idea of Davros as a able bodied villain as Doctor Who has moved on from having a disabled villain.
This is really interesting! I think overall doctor who treads the line of what's suitable for viewing quite well. I must admit I've never been able to rewatch The Waters of Mars! 😂 I think one other scene I've always been slightly wary of is the part in The Doctor's Wife where the entity house takes control of the tardis and shows amy an older version of rory who tells her she left him alone and that he hates her, then when she goes through another door house makes her think rory's died. Admittedly these scenes are very powerful and add to the episode, but I do find them difficult to rewatch. But maybe that's just me. Thanks Ellie and Who Culture! 😊😊
I just want to know how, in the altered timeline, Sir Isaac Newton managed to convince the entire world, speaking so many different languages, to completely forget the ancient Latin word _gravis,_ for "heavy," and instead trade it out for a new word that only existed in Newton's own writings in English. The Doctor's accident was millennia too late to have the effect it's had in his universe. I can only assume that Davies didn't bother to think back further than Modern period British history.
I commented on the original story that both words, gravitas & gravity, had already been in use for hundred(s?) of years by Newton’s time. I don’t think Russell cares.
Surprised Ellie didn't put that scene from a trailer with a topless River song that was then cut out of the episode in question. :) Or the scenes from Robot of Sherwood that were deemed too much around the time that ISIS was actually beheading actual human beings.
I seem to remember hearing that way back when filming the very first story, The Unearthly Child, Warris Hussain went all out showing the aftermath of a caveman being beaten to death with a rock before it was pointed out this new show was aimed at kids and this shot edited out.
The historical figures in Chibnall's run listed needed their own episodes. They felt tacked on after the fact in episodes already juggling a lot. It wasn't a good idea when dealing with people alot of the audience probably wouldn't know about. The only character I learned about at school was Mary Seacole.
Cool as seeing Davros' accident on screen would be, I'm glad we got it instead in the form of the I, Davros audios by Big Finish. That said I still feel that RTD is trying to fix a non-issue w his current Davros; the man was already evil before he was disabled. But I have a theory. 14's comment about the timelines and canon rupturing could be true after all. Neo Davros could be from a timeline in which Davros heeded his cohorts' radio earnings about the oncoming missile and escaped his lab before the impact. A timeline split in which an intact Davros continues his work on the Daleks.
I have quite an alternative option; speaking of Big Finish, one of their other stories with Davros was Terror Firma (released 2005, just a year before I, Davros was) where he essentially turned Earth into a Dalek breeding farm. The Doctor also found that Davros had created a clone of his body to escape the confinements of his chair as he said it. I think that Davies might pinch that idea if he wants Davros back, but I don't think that's a good idea as it's been pointed out that not making him disabled is ableist. I've heard people think that Davros is a good representation of a disability as he has not let his limits get the better of him. He has even become one of the Doctor's biggest enemies.
Yet he's happy to have mobility aids have weapons of death and violence employed and have a character who is playing a 13 year old shooting away - that's fine and dandy but Davros is a big Hell No?? Also RTD banging on about racism etc etc yet the the finale the two people to die first were both non Caucasian - ahhh yes the age old trope still alive and well 😂
@@katrose5179 The best to watch with younger children to turn them into fans, without disturbing them too much. Are there any episodes WITHOUT horror-elements or people being killed in gruesome ways?
The original designs for the flood is TERRIFYING, like at 9:12 the paper on the right is absolutely nightmare fuel, just a black void for a mouth. I fear no man, but that thing.... It scares me.
@@marionbagginsand? Your point is? 😂 And NuWho has never took inspiration from other shows? Oh I saw a clear rip off Event Horizon in NuWho. Plus Kane was from an ice world so of course he was going to melt 😂
It was a trend or something for US editing to take a completely different turn from the UK originals. Decades ago in the 60s, US Beatles albums were different from the UK versions. In that case, Capital Records was just out out to get as much money out of the band's fame as they possibly could. Leave well enough alone should be the order of the day. Cheers....
Yes… some of these ideas sound pretty good. I like the darker serous tones and sometimes I wish doctor who wasn’t aimed for kids so we could get those darker serious tones.
You forgot to mention the original design for the Reapers in the episode Fathers Day. They were originally supposed to look like the Grim Reaper (hence the name) and were hinted to be where the legend of the Grim Reaper originated from.
Mr Oak and Mr Quill. They never say a single word. No make up effects or anything, just a silent, sinister presence. And they can gas you, too. I think that they were just husks, inhabited by fragments of the weed creature. They were, and I saw the story when first broadcast, bloody terrifying. Just two ordinary blokes. But as creepy as fuck.
May be misremembering my youth but I’m pretty sure Frontios was aired when Dr Who was Tuesday and Thursday evening telly. Not Saturday evening telly. :)
When I was young, it was during "The Wilderness Years". One of the few stories I had was a two cassette tape version of "The Macra Terror". I listened to that A LOT. My alarm on my phone is still The Controller yelling "Macra do not exist! There are no Macra!" at top volume. 😂 🦀🦀🦀
I remember some shows/movies of the mid 1970s-early 1980s being referred to as " being like a Dr Who set"...meaning most/all sub- characters were killed off😂😂). This happened Alot from Drs 3-7(esp during Tom Baker's era... example being "Horror of Fang Rock"😂😂)💕💕💕💕👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
To this day the similarities between The Flood in the Waters of Mars and The Flood from Halo always strikes me as insanely wild. Both are parasitic organisms that can infect a host with a single spec of their being, and both have insanely fast transformation times and grant their hosts unnatural strength, stamina and resilience, as well as mutating the host into zombie-like beings with deformed bodies. The Flood in both Doctor Who and Halo are terrifying foes. I do wonder if now we might see them potentially return in RTD2, and if they do, if they might have that scarier design they initially had.
I remember when my sister told me about the Waters of Mars, I thought she was bsing me because it sounded way too scary and just out of there. Then I saw it for myself and I was like "Oh damn."
Well I'm in United States. I cannot watch Doctor Who anymore. Since it went over to iPlayer and Disney Plus. I'm not going to pay a high cable bill plus a premium channel bill on top of that each month. Until doctor who comes back to the United States and plays for free like it was before.
I always look forward to seeing how the show pushes the boat out with testing the content shown. I want to see an all out bloody war, or at least an edit of one suitable for this "new" audience. We call them, "the snowflake audience"
...the pity being that with Disney on the helm the dark and evil storytelling of DOCTOR WHO is over. There still are more than fifty years of good, classic television around (nonetheless). 🌈👽🦸♀✡🚘🚔🪫🪗🎼🔋🤖🇮🇱! 🇺🇦!!!!!!!!
