With countries closing their borders all around us due to COVID-19, we make the tough decision to part ways with our buddy boat and continue 850 miles to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. After only learning to sail a few months before, this was quite the journey. Join us on this adventure as we spend 10 salty days at sea!

I am hooked on watching you two. I am originally from the Gulf Of Mexico around Mobile and Pensacola. I currently live in Phoenix. NOt much natural water here.I love the desert but miss the water. I get my fill watching your vids. Beautiful! I found you accidentally and and began when you guys sailed to Bora Bora. Decided to begin from the start. Be safe.

@@SailingOneLife indeed. I often hear folks talk about how puritanical America is because, for instance, we do not show boobs on TV and such while other countries do. Or that in other countries women can walk around with their boobs out. I would rather not see the boobs out all of the time because then boobs would, at some point, cease to be special. I want the pleasure of unwrapping them and experiencing them for myself. But people STILL insist that we should be like these other places. I say no, lets keep some things special.

Mostly commenting for the algorithm, but I also have a request... I'm a freshwater fisherman but aspire to fish in saltwater once I get my boat. How about a how-to on what lures you use of any techniques you use when diving? Just a thought... You look like you enjoy fishing and have pretty good success. Cheers!
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife 3 года назад
We definitely need to talk about fishing more in a video! Our main secret: we have lines in the water just about any time the boat is moving and constantly are checking and resetting them. We used to troll skirted ballyhoo back in our powerboat days, but now we mostly stick to small daisy chains of squid lures. And we usually try to have one lure below the surface. That one doesn't always catch the fish, but seems to help attract them. If you know the basics already you'll have no problem fishing in saltwater!

Another amazing sailing adventure. The sleeping four on, four off seems mind bending. Does your mind every go into deep sleep? Nice fishing catches, yummy. You two are rocking the deep blue sea. Stay groovy and stay safe.
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife 2 года назад
Sleeping is tough with just the two of us on long passages. Our 4 hour 'break' normally only allows us to sleep probably 3 hours of that.....by the time we eat something, fall asleep etc. And we never really do get deep sleep, but after a couple days your body starts to get used to the new schedule. We are always exhausted after long sails by the time we get there but the destination is always worth it! ⛵♥️

Nice work! - Did you ever do the ICW? I am so wondering about some one who could compare going off shore vs taking the ICW - which one is more work. Cross benefits of the risk - running aground and damaging your boat in the ICW vs Weather Windows collapsing at sea. Anyway. Loved the video!
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife 3 года назад
Hey there! Thanks for watching! We took the ICW from Cape Canaveral to West Palm because we thought as newbies it would be best so we could wait for a weather window in West Palm before crossing as that was the shortest offshore distance for our hop to the Bahamas. However knowing what we know now, it was a huge pain in the ass and much more work than waiting for the right weather in Cape Canaveral and heading offshore from there. It is tough to sail in the ICW due to narrow/shallow channels so we had to motor most of the way. There are also SO many bridges and hitting the draw bridges at the right times is damn near impossible so you are left hovering waiting for bridges to open. If we were to do it over again, we'd head offshore and not mess with the ICW, our personal opinion!

Yay, that is a big bull mahi mahi. I think you made the right choise to head for UVI. I wonder why you as Americans were not welcome in PR? Did you ever manage to check out of Bahamas? I was watching your plotter, do you have AIS?
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife 2 года назад
We agree, looking back we are happy we went to USVI and kept going rather than turning back. I am not sure of the exact reason we weren't allowed in Puerto Rico but the rule was only Puerto Rico flagged vessels were able to enter the territory. If we would have already been in PR during the lockdown we would have been able to stay with no issues but since we were coming from Bahamas it was a no go.
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife 2 года назад
We never did check out of the Bahamas. Unfortunately we contacted the government there and tried to do all the things we needed but could never get in touch with a customs agent to check us out. That was the other good thing about is going to USVI. Since we are US citizens we did not need a Zarpe for entry. We only receive AIS, we do not transmit. But we will be adding that capability during our next haulout which will be this summer.

@sailingarbitrage

i have watched alot of your videos . dont you have a rudder lock on that boat . when i lost my auto pilot i set that , it saves on alot of hand steering
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife Год назад
Yes we have a wheel brake, and it's possible to lock the helm when sailing tight upwind and she will stay on course. Going downwind though it won't work, no matter how much we try to trim and balance the sails.
